KUCHING: The first two divers found stranded off the coast of Santubong peninsula have been discharged from Sarawak General Hospital with a clean bill of health after overnight observations.

A statement from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), which led the rescue efforts, said the duo was fine and resting.

“The two divers were found by a fishing vessel at 8.37pm at Tanjung Sipang on Saturday,” the statement said. “They were sent to the hospital immediately after rescue.”

Over the weekend, a routine dive to look at underwater relics for three divers quickly turned into a nightmare just past noon.

Satoo Makoto, 40, a Japanese employee at Taiyo Yuden here, a manufacturer of electronic components, and his Kuala Lumpur friend, Ngu Teck Hua, 52, were stranded at sea for about 10 hours.

“We surfaced and saw the boat was quite far away,” Satoo said, moments after landing at the Marine Department’s Santubong jetty around midnight.

“The dive master left to get the boat. But he didn’t come back. Everything about the dive was normal before.”

Satoo said he and Ngu huddled together for hours.

Ngu said all three of them had surfaced at about 2pm. It was their third dive of the day to look at a shipwreck, which is about 30km from the Santubong Peninsula.

Asked by police if the boat was anchored, Ngu said the boat was not.

An anchor was lowered but pulled up once they had dived, Ngu said. The practice is common among divers internationally to prevent coral damage or damage to the sea bed by anchors.

According to the divers, the boat had drifted with the currents.

The dive master, Hisashi Koze, 39, left the duo and swam towards the direction of the boat.

“He lost sight of us and could not come back,” Ngu said.

The boatman, who was speeding back, lodged a missing persons report at Kampung Santubong at about 5pm.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department’s records, the department’s Petra Jaya office was alerted at 5.30pm, and a team of rescue officers arrived at the resort, where the divers had set off, at 6.02pm.

MMEA — which is the Malaysian equivalent of the coast guards — was called in to help with search and rescue efforts at about 7pm.

“MMEA was told two Japanese nationals and one Malaysian were lost at sea during a diving expedition,” its statement said.

“Three boats, KM Bijak, Bot Kilat 35 and Bot Kilat 22 were dispatched immediately. Our boats were also joined by one from the Fire and Rescue Department.”

Additional MMEA officers were sent to the Santubong jetty to receive the fishing vessels and the two divers, while the rescue boats continued searching for the last remaining diver.

The last diver Koze swam back to the resort, arriving at about 10am yesterday.

summore, the APMM officer called them "nelayan" padahal they're N41, J41 and S41... all high scale officer the APMM simply call them nelayan, tau la muka balik dari mancing semua kena sun burn, messy hair...
