Headphones mic not working with my Lenovo G40

Firstly, I do apologise if I do not get the technical terms right here. Not much of a computer savvy person myself, hence this problem.

Anyways, I just bought a Lenovo G40 a week ago. Only when I got back did I notice that it only has one audio port. This was something new to me as I always thought laptops comes with two ports, one for the headphones and the other for the external mic. At least that was what my old laptop had. So now, I am having trouble using my headset(Edifier K800) because it has 2 separate jacks, one for the speaker and another for the mic.

If I plug in the mic jack, can't hear anything at all. If I plug in the speaker jack instead, I can hear clearly, unfortunately the laptop still uses the internal built-in mic. I used Skype to do these tests. This is somewhat of a problem for me as I use Skype a lot for work discussion and I don't want any noise interferences, hence the need of the external mic.

I tried googling for a solution, but can't seem to find any. Probably because my keyword or the technical term for it is not right. I would really appreciate any and all help given. Thanks in advance !!

Community Empowerment

Hey guys,

I'm really interested into volunteerism and community empowerment as a whole. Even now in my student life, I can say that to an extent I'm doing so more than my studying. It just shows that I'm serious into this. And you know how people always say that "do what you like so you will like what you do" or something along those lines.
Hence my 1st question :- Is there a certain/specific job that does this kind of work ? What can I do with this set of skills and interest ?

Another thing is I've born into quite a well off family. Thank God for giving me parents who could afford what I needed and also wanted. Having lived in this kind of environment, I certainly want the best for my future kids and future spouse. I want them to also feel and taste the financial freedom that I was so lucky enough to had enjoyed. To be honest, I don't really need wealth as even among my siblings, I'm the one who spends least on things. So, when I talk about money, I'm really thinking of my future family whom I certainly want the best for them.
This comes to my 2nd question :- If there is such a job, will it pay me enough in the sense that my future family will be able to enjoy the luxury that I've been enjoying.

Before anyone comment, please take into consideration that this is a legit and sincere post from a student who is finding his path in life. I'm trying to describe my life for all to understand. I'm certainly not trying to toot my own horn. I do appreciate whatever comments or suggestions you guys have.
