Turkey has rolled out a nationwide scheme to stop and weigh people in public, with inspectors then telling them to slim down if they are found to be overweight.

Health workers have been deployed across each of the country's 81 regions with weighing scales and tape measures as the drive to assess 10 million people by July 10 is underway.

Passersby are stopped by medical examiners for spot body mass index (BMI) checks while walking through town squares, shopping centres and parks, and even as they prepare to board buses or head to football matches, according to reports.

Speaking at a nursing conference last week, Turkey's Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu declared that '50 percent of our society is overweight.'

He pointed to the various health risks associated with being overweight, telling the meeting: 'Being overweight means being sick, it means we will get sick in the future.

'Our young children are overweight, their body resistance is high and that's why they don't get sick, but when they start getting older, that weight will turn into joint and heart diseases.'

But Memişoğlu was not spared the scales in Ankara last week - and was told by health officials that he was among the large proportion of the population counted as 'above normal weight'.

'Which dietitian should I go to?' he reportedly said afterwards, before adding in a follow-up post on Thursday: 'Turns out I'm a little over. It's up to me now, I'll be walking every day.'

Another person who was checked by the inspectors, psychiatrist and academic Gökben Hızlı Sayar, wrote on X: 'I got caught in a fat checkpoint in Üsküdar Square. Luckily, they scolded me a little and let me go.

'Like drivers warning of speed traps, I tipped off three other chubby people heading that way. Solidarity, my fellow fat comrades!'

Memişoğlu responded to people joking about the scheme on social media: 'Dear young people, I read what you write on social media. You are very entertaining, but the issue of being overweight is serious.'

Pictures from around Turkey have shown people being guided onto weighing scales and having their height measured before their weight is calculated.

The anti-obesity campaign, which is described by officials as a 'national fight' and is running under the tag line 'know your weight, live healthy,' began on May 10 and plans to survey one in eight Turks.

People with a BMI over 25 are referred to state-run Family Health centres and Healthy Life centres, where they can receive free nutritional counseling and follow-up services.

Former US President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, a statement from his office said on Sunday.

Biden, who left office in January, was diagnosed on Friday after he saw a doctor last week for urinary symptoms.

The cancer is a more aggressive form of the disease, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 out of 10. This means his illness is classified as "high-grade" and that the cancer cells could spread quickly, according to Cancer Research UK.

Biden and his family are said to be reviewing treatment options. The former president's office added that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, meaning it can likely be managed.

After news broke of his diagnosis, the former president received support from both sides of the aisle.

President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he and First Lady Melania Trump "are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis."

"We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family," he said, referring to former First Lady Jill Biden. "We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."

Former Vice-President Kamala Harris, who served under Biden, wrote on X that she and her husband Doug Emhoff are keeping the Biden family in their prayers.

"Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership," Harris said.

In a post on X, Barack Obama - who served as president from 2009 to 2017 with Joe Biden as his deputy - said that he and his wife Michelle were "thinking of the entire Biden family".

"Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery," Obama said. In 2016, the former president launched a "cancer moonshot" programme and announced that Biden would lead it.

The news comes nearly a year after the former president was forced to drop out of the 2024 US presidential election over concerns about his health and age. He is the oldest person to hold the office in US history.

Biden, then the Democratic nominee vying for re-election, faced mounting criticism of his poor performance in a June televised debate against Republican nominee and current president Donald Trump. He was replaced as the Democratic candidate by his vice president Harris.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer affecting men, behind skin cancer, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 13 out of every 100 men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

Age is the most common risk factor, the CDC says.

Dr William Dahut, the Chief Scientific Officer at the American Cancer Society and a trained prostate cancer physician, told the BBC that the cancer is more aggressive in nature, based on the publicly-available information on Biden's diagnosis.

"In general, if cancer has spread to the bones, we don't think it is considered a curable cancer," Dr Dahut said.

He noted, however, that most patients tend to respond well to initial treatment, "and people can live many years with the diagnosis".

Dr Dahut said that someone with the former president's diagnosis will likely be offered hormonal therapies to mitigate symptoms and to slow the growth of cancerous cells.

Biden had largely retreated from the public eye since leaving the White House and he has made few public appearances.

The former president delivered a keynote speech in April at a Chicago conference held by the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled, a US-based advocacy group for people with disabilities.

In May, he sat down for an interview with the BBC - his first since leaving the White House - where he admitted that the decision to step down from the 2024 race was "difficult".

Biden has faced questions about the status of his health in recent months.

In an appearance on The View programme that also took place in May, Biden denied claims that he had been experiencing cognitive decline in his final year at the White House. "There is nothing to sustain that," he said.

For many years, the president had advocated for cancer research. In 2022, he and Mrs Biden relaunched the Cancer Moonshot initiative with the goal of mobilising research efforts to prevent more than four million cancer deaths by the year 2047.

Biden himself lost his eldest son, Beau, to brain cancer in 2015.

SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- President Yoon Suk Yeol declared Wednesday that South Korea is in a "demographic national emergency" due to its declining population, vowing to make all-out efforts to tackle the country's ultralow birth rate.

Yoon made the remark during a meeting of the presidential committee on the low birth rate and aging population amid grim prospects and warnings that South Korea's population could ultimately become extinct unless the trend is reversed.

"Today, I officially declare a demographic national emergency. We will activate a pan-government comprehensive response system until the low birth rate issue is overcome," Yoon said during the meeting held at a child care center in HD Hyundai's R&D Center in Seongnam, south of Seoul.

South Korea's total fertility rate -- the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime -- fell to a fresh low of 0.72 in 2023, well below the replacement level of 2.1 needed to maintain the country's population at 51 million.

The government has tried various incentives to help entice families to have children over the past decade, but a number of factors, including expensive housing prices, education costs and long working hours, have made young people reluctant to start families and have babies.

Yoon outlined three main areas focused on balancing work and life, improving child care and providing better housing to address the complex issues.

The measures include increasing parental leave allowances and extending leave for fathers, aiming to raise the usage rate of paternity leave from the current 6.8 percent to 50 percent during Yoon's term.

They also include implementing flexible work hours, extending the age limit for reduced working hours for parents of young children and providing subsidies for employers who hire temporary replacements for employees on parental leave.

Yoon also vowed to increase support for child care and expand after-school programs at elementary schools to ease the educational burden on parents.

Households with newborns will be given priority in housing allocations and low-interest loans for home purchases to encourage more newlywed couples to have babies. Additionally, tax benefits for households with children will be expanded.

To ensure the implementation of the measures, Yoon said a new ministry, tentatively named the Ministry of Population Strategy Planning, will be established, and the minister will serve as the deputy prime minister for social affairs.

The ministry will be in charge of crafting strategies concerning population issues, including the low birth rate, the aging society and immigration policies, with the authority to review budgets and consult with provincial governments on related projects.

Yoon asked for the National Assembly's cooperation to establish the envisioned ministry as soon as possible.

There is outrage after Jeff Bezos’ $86 million Gulf Stream jet was among the hundreds of VIP jets flying into Scottish environmental summit COP26.

Around 400 private jets carrying heads of state, billionaires, business leaders and celebrities have converged on Glasgow for a global warming summit.

“It can’t be stressed enough how bad private jets are for the environment, it is the worst way to travel by miles,” Matt Finch from the UK’s Transport and Environment campaign group told Scotland’s Sunday Mail.

“The average private jet, and we are not talking Air Force One, emits two tonnes of CO2 for every hour in flight. Private jets are very prestigious but it is difficult to avoid the hypocrisy of using one while claiming to be fighting climate change.”

He said for context, the “total carbon footprint of an ordinary citizen – including everywhere they travel and everything they consume – is around eight tonnes a year”.

In total, the 400 private aircraft are expected to emit some 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

But UK Secretary of State Liz Truss defended the large number of planes flying into Glasgow, saying “it’s really important that we do have people face to face”.

“I think everybody who’s ever done a Zoom call knows that they’re quite useful for some things,” Ms Truss told BBC Breakfast.

“But when you really get into crunch negotiations. When you want to look somebody in the eye and talk to them face to face, you do need to meet in person. And this is really critical.”

She added, “World leaders are going to have to make some tough decisions about what’s going on in their own countries. They’re going to have to commit to things they didn’t necessarily want to when they arrived at the conference.

“And that’s why it’s really important that we do have people face to face and these negotiations can take place. We can make a real difference.”

Climate campaigner Leonardo DiCaprio took to Twitter on Monday, writing, “The climate crisis is here. #COP26 must be a turning point to protect people and the planet.

“Leaders, the world is watching and urging you to rise to this moment. There’s no time to lose.”

Page Six reported that representatives for DiCaprio didn’t comment, neither did reps for Bezos — who also just caused controversy by partying with Bill Gates on a mega-yacht off the coast of Turkey.

But sources said DiCaprio was one VIP attendee who flew commercial to the conference. He was spotted at Heathrow airport in London connecting flights, a source exclusively told Page Six.

In July 2019 there was a similar outcry when A-listers arrived to the Google summit in Sicily — to discuss climate change — in a convoy of private jets and mega-yachts. Guests including former President Barack Obama, Prince Harry, DiCaprio and Katy Perry converged to the Sicilian seaside for the mega-party dubbed Google Camp, while local media reported 114 private jets were scheduled to arrive.

Heroin shipment from m'sia seized by aussie

Australian police have announced the seizure of the largest heroin shipment ever recorded in the country, worth around A$140 million (£76m; $104m).

Authorities said the shipment, which weighed 450kg, included 1,290 packages of heroin with unique red branding.

The seizure was made at the Port of Melbourne - Australia's largest port - on September 29.

Offices said they arrested a Malaysian man after the huge haul was discovered in a container of ceramic tiles.

He was later charged with the import and attempted possession of a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. He could face a sentence of up to life in prison.

Testing of the substance in the packages showed it was heroin.

The shipment originated in Malaysia and was bound for a business located in Melbourne. Several locations were later raided in the Victorian state capital.

Speaking following the announcement, Acting Assistant Commissioner Krissy Barrett of the Australian Federal Police said the discovery had been made thanks to close co-operation between international police forces.

"We have a strong relationship with the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) and in particular the RMP Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department," she said. "We continue to work together in identifying and disrupting transnational organised crime syndicates that seek to harm both our nations and generate millions of dollars of profits from criminal activity."

Commissioner Barrett added that police estimated that they had saved one life for every two kilograms of the drug removed from circulation in Australia's communities.

"It is important to note that in addition to the arrests made, the primary outcome of this operation is the preservation of an estimated 225 lives" she said.

In 2019, authorities made an even bigger bust, when they discovered an enormous haul of methamphetamine worth around A$1.2bn (£660m, $840m) hidden inside stereo speakers at a Melbourne port. Around 37kg of heroin was also found in that raid.

South African Scientists Say New Variant May Have ‘Increased Transmissibility’

South African scientists said they identified a new coronavirus variant that has a concerning number of mutations.

The so-called C.1.2. variant was first identified in May in the South African provinces of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, where Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria, are situated, the scientists said in a research paper. By August 13, it had been found in six of South Africa’s nine provinces as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Portugal, New Zealand and Switzerland.

The mutations on the virus “are associated with increased transmissibility” and an increased ability to evade antibodies, the scientists said. “It is important to highlight this lineage given its concerning constellation of mutations.”

Changes in the virus have driven successive waves of the coronavirus with the delta variant, first found in India, now pushing up infection rates across the world. Mutations are first classified as variants of interest by the World Health Organization. Once they are identified as being more severe or transmissible, they’re termed variants of concern.

C.1.2. evolved from C.1., a lineage of the virus that dominated infections in the first wave of the virus in South Africa in mid-2020. It has between 44 and 59 mutations from the original virus detected in Wuhan in China.

The research was published by South African groups including the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, known as Krisp, and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

In May, the variant accounted for 0.2% of the genomes sequenced in the country. That rose to 1.6% in June and 2% in July.

“We are currently assessing the impact of this variant on antibody neutralization” in both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, the scientists said.

The results are expected within a week, Tulio de Oliveira, the director of Krisp, said at an immunology conference on Monday.

“It has only been detected in around 100 genomes, a very low number,” he said. “It’s still a very small percentage, but again we are really keeping a good eye on that. It has all of the signatures of immune escape.”

South African scientists also discovered the beta variant in 2020. They have stressed that the country’s advanced ability to sequence the genomes of the virus enables the identification of new strains, they could have originated elsewhere.

OnlyFans, the user-generated adult content site, is reversing course on plans to ban “sexually explicit” content after securing agreement with its payment processors, it has announced.

Last week, OnlyFans said it would ban adult material from 1 October, to the dismay of its users and creators, who argued that doing so risked driving such work underground.

Those plans have been scrapped, the company said in a tweet. “Thank you to everyone for making your voices heard. We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change. OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators.”

Angry users had initially blamed OnlyFans for the planned ban on sexually explicit material. The company, which is wholly owned by the porn mogul Leo Radvinsky, has long expressed a desire to move beyond adult material to more general-interest content. Just two days before it announced the proposed ban, the company revealed a new business venture, OFTV, which would take its platform on to smart TVs for the first time. Due to app store rules, explicit content was banned from that service – a fact that some took as a harbinger of wider plans.

But on Tuesday, OnlyFans’ chief executive and co-founder, Tim Stokely, instead laid the blame for the porn ban at the feet of the company’s financial backers. “The change in policy, we had no choice – the short answer is banks,” Stokely told the Financial Times in an interview.

“We pay over one million creators over $300m every month, and making sure that these funds get to creators involves using the banking sector.”

Stokely singled out one bank in particular, BNY Mellon, as having flagged and rejected transfers, while another, UK-based Metro Bank, closed the company’s accounts in 2019. BNY Mellon and Metro Bank declined to comment when asked about Stokely’s claims on Tuesday.

OnlyFans is also affected by new rules from payment processors such as Mastercard, which are intended to crack down on abuses such as the non-consensual sharing of sexual imagery and child sexual abuse material. Requirements for providers of adult content, announced by Mastercard in April, demand “documented age and identity verification for all people depicted and those uploading the content” and pre-publication review by platform holders.

“You might ask: ‘Why now?’”, Mastercard said at the time. “In the past few years, the ability to upload content to the internet has become easier than ever. All someone needs is a smartphone and a wifi connection.”

The privately held OnlyFans reached a valuation of more than $1bn (£730m) in the summer following a surge in usage over the course of the pandemic. It was popular among amateur creators for its comparatively low fees on subscriptions, allowing them to take home about 80% of their earnings. When news of the planned pivot was revealed, some worried that they would be endangered when they lost their main source of income.

“This change will put workers on the street who could otherwise afford rent, it will starve the children of sex workers who could otherwise afford to feed them, and it will force workers currently working remotely online into riskier street-based sex work,” Mary Moody, an online sex worker and co-chair of the Adult Industry Laborers and Artists Association, told the Guardian last week.

Virgin Galactic space flight tickets to start at $450,000

Virgin Galactic has reopened ticket sales for its space flights at a starting price of $450,000 a seat.

It comes after the company, led by billionaire Richard Branson, completed its first fully crewed flight to the edge of space in July.

The firm hopes to start commercial flights next year after completing several more test missions.

It had previously sold tickets at $250,000 apiece but stopped in 2014 after a fatal accident.

In a statement, boss Michael Colglazier said last month's successful test mission had renewed public interest in the firm's offer.

"Leveraging the surge in consumer interest following the Unity 22 flight, we are excited to announce the reopening of sales effective today," he said.

"As we endeavour to bring the wonder of space to a broad global population, we are delighted to open the door to an entirely new industry and consumer experience."
Virgin Galactic is currently vying with Blue Origin, run by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, and Space X, owned by Tesla's Elon Musk, to develop a space tourism market.

Days after the Virgin mission in July, Mr Bezos took part in the first fully crewed test flight of one his own planes into space.

He is expected to sell tickets on future Blue Origin flights for between $200,000 and $300,000.

Space X meanwhile last year undertook the first crewed test flight of its Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station.

Under a partnership with Nasa it plans to transport astronauts to the ISS in future. It also plans to send three tourists on a 10-day trip later this year.

For its flights, Virgin said it prospective tourists would have the option to buy single seats, friends and family packages, or reserve the whole plane.

Those who have already expressed an interest in the flights will get to reserve their seats first. About 600 tickets had been sold before it previously halted sales.

The firm's next spaceflight, Unity 23, is expected to take off in late September from Spaceport America in New Mexico.

PETALING JAYA: Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam has received a letter of demand seeking damages of RM1mil for alleged defamatory remarks she made.

The 17-year-old student wrote about this in an Instagram post on Wednesday (Aug 5).

"Today suddenly during online class I received a letter of demand on 'defamatory statements' I apparently made (sic)," she said.

According to the letter, Ain Husniza said that she had seven days to fulfil these demands, one of which was to pay RM1mil for punitive damages.

However, she did not elaborate what the purported "defamatory statements" were.

"All I ask is for everyone to pray for me that everything will be made easier," she said, also thanking everyone for their support.

Ain Husniza made headlines earlier this year for calling out her physical education teacher's rape jokes made in class.

In a Facebook post, her father Saiful Nizam Abdul Wahab said that the letter, which was delivered at 2pm, was for Ain Husniza, himself and his wife.

"There are five demands and one of them is to pay RM1mil in damages. We received the letter from the law firm of Rasshidi Ema & Yung.

"Following lawyer's advice, we will not comment further on this for now.

"We will get more advice from our lawyer on our rights and the next course of action," he said.

Saiful Nizam also noted that the letter came from the physical education teacher at the school her daughter previously studied.
