Hi guys, want your opinion on jumpship to IT industry. I have a degree background in Mechanical Engineering, experience of working around 4-5 years mainly doing wastewater & water treatment plant. Salary progression as a engineer is very slow. I'm reaching 30 soon, already married & having kids & other commitments. The work like a kuli, very hectic especially when working at site dealing with waste & chemicals. When coming back home from site works always smell like hell . Have been retrenched & last drawn salary 4.5-5k. Had enough of working like that, exhausted & burnt out. During MCO still outstation & going to site working like hell. Just the thought of working from home is very appealing.

Been thinking of jumpship to IT/software industry & start fresh. I always very passionate in tech since I was young, leading the IT club & win a few robotic & programming competition during high school. But due to family pressure, I have to take mechanical engineering when continue study at uni. Even when working, I was handling few IT roles in my previous company (setting up emails, pc, server, webpage etc.). Currently self learning on programming with python & some web dev. During my uni, study basic C++. In the process of building portfolio & few projects. Maybe in a few months will start to apply & search for jobs.

What do you guys think about this move? Career/salary progression for IT is ok or not in Malaysia? Is this applicable during these pandemic time?
