KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail today said the CCTV footage of the attack on the son of Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli was unclear.

He said this has made it difficult to identify the suspects, though investigations are still ongoing.

“We are tracking the movement, and as we are aware, we have spotted a few individuals from the CCTV footage.

“However, the footage is not very clear and they cannot be identified,” Mohd Khalid told reporters at a press conference here.

Last month, Rafizi’s son was attacked around 2pm at the drop-off area of a shopping mall here.

Rafizi claimed the attack involved two men in black clothes and helmets on a motorcycle, with one of them dragging his son before injecting him with something using a syringe.

Police have since taken statements from 19 individuals, including Rafizi’s family members, a driver, employees, and several other witnesses, to assist in the investigation.

Mohd Khalid said police are still waiting for a chemical report from the hospital regarding the liquid injected into Rafizi’s son.

Previously, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad urged all parties to be patient and wait for the results of the medical report.

Dzulkefly said the matter is still under investigation and will take some time to be resolved.

Soldier found dead, another missing at semporna

SEMPORNA: A soldier was found dead while another has been reported missing during duty at the PDRM–Armed Forces joint post on Mataking Island yesterday.

The Joint Task Force 2 confirmed the incident, involving two personnel from Company 5, 5th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (5 RAMD), who were carrying out Op Pasir Sector Semporna Series 3/2025.

It was learnt that at about 6pm, the two soldiers were found to be absent during a routine roll call. A search operation was immediately launched with the assistance of all personnel at the location, before seeking help from a nearby resort boat.

At 9.25pm, the search team discovered one of the soldiers, Private Muhammad Irfan Haiqal Abdullah, 20, unconscious on the island's shoreline.

"The resort's medical team immediately administered CPR, but the victim was later confirmed dead," a source said.

The body was sent to Semporna Hospital for further action.

The other soldier, Private Muhammad Zulkarnain Jaffar, 27, is still missing. Search and rescue (SAR) efforts are ongoing with the assistance of army and resort boats, as well as other agencies, including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and Sahabat forces.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a drowning, but further investigations are underway.

Authorities said updates on the operation will be provided from time to time.

Mother seeks transparent probe into daughter's death in school dormitory ( suspected/alleged bullying)

SIPITANG: "I want a transparent, fair and just investigation."

These were the words of Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who recently died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a school dormitory building.

The incident involving the student from Sipitang has also been linked to bullying among students at the school.

Noraidah, 45, a teacher, recounted that the last time she met her only daughter was during a school gotong-royong (communal work) programme on July 12.

"On that Saturday (July 12), the school held a gotong-royong. My daughter really wanted me to attend. Before that, she had called using a public phone and said, 'Mama, please come'.

"I joked with her that I'm not good at gotong-royong. But the next morning, I left Sipitang at about 9am.

"Only a few people were there for the programme, so she was very happy. After the gotong-royong ended, we went straight back to Sipitang," she said.

The following Sunday, she sent Zara back to the dormitory.

"I didn't notice anything unusual; she was still her usual enthusiastic self," she said.

Noraidah further said that on the same Saturday, Zara spent the evening at the Esplanade Public Park playing games with her friend until 7pm.

"I picked them up after that and we went home. The next day, I sent her back to the hostel.

"When we were about to leave for the dorm, she said she wanted to go back a bit later than usual. But I didn't suspect anything. Around 1pm, I told her we had to leave. The latest she could arrive was by 3.30pm," she said when met at her home today.

Noraidah also recalled that on Sunday, before returning to the dorm, Zara cooked egg bread.

"That was the last meal she brought and cooked at my house. I found it strange at the time. She cooked it for us," she said.

Originally from Kampung Naluyan, Noraidah expressed hope that the investigation into her daughter's death would be carried out transparently and fairly.

Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, who visited Noraidah today, also presented a RM10,000 contribution from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), in addition to other cash assistance.

Also present were Qhazanah Sabah Berhad chairman and Sindumin assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, and Yayasan Sabah director, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a separate development, expressed condolences and visited the family at the hospital to ensure all their needs were met and their welfare looked after.

In a statement, she said the Education Ministry (KPM) would fully cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation.

Papar police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka had said police were conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of Zara's death.

Meanwhile, Papar district police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said police received a report at 8.16am last Wednesday regarding a student who was found unconscious in a drain near the school hostel.

He said the victim is believed to have fallen from the building.

"The victim was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment but was pronounced dead at about 1pm yesterday (Thursday)," he said.

Kamaruddin added that a thorough investigation is underway, including looking into all possible aspects believed to be linked to the incident.

It was reported yesterday that the Education Ministry is working closely with the police to investigate the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, who reportedly fell from the third floor of a school hostel in Sabah.

Its minister Fadhlina Sidek had said that the ministry would extend its full cooperation to the authorities and that investigators must be allowed to carry out their work without interference.

She also said the incident is currently being investigated by the police and urged the public not to speculate, as this could disrupt the ongoing investigation

Zayyan Rayyan case: Father acquitted

PETALING JAYA, July 21 — The Sessions Court here has reportedly ordered the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, a six-year-old autistic boy who died in 2023, to enter her defence on charges of child neglect.

New Straits Times reported that Judge Syahliza Warnoh ruled that a prima facie case had been established by the prosecution against Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30.

Her husband and Zayn Rayyan’s father, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, also 30, was however acquitted of the joint amended charge brought against the couple in February.

On April 24, the prosecution closed the case after calling 28 prosecution witnesses throughout the 20-day trial, which began on February 4.

Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner likely to cause physical harm to the victim in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai up to the nearby river area between 12 noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023.

They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of RM50,000 or both, if convicted.

Zayn Rayyan, 6, was reported missing on December 5, 2023 and his body was found the next day in a stream near his house.

PETALING JAYA: The mistake on the Jalur Gemilang displayed on the front page of a local Chinese newspaper was unacceptable, says His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

His Majesty added that the national flag was beyond a mere decorated piece of cloth and that it represented the historical struggle, meaning of independence and the spirit of the rakyat.

"We, as the rakyat, fly the flag with pride and patriotism within the multi-racial community.

“The mistake of displaying a picture of the Jalur Gemilang without a crescent moon as published on the front page of a local Chinese-language newspaper could trigger the sensitivities of the people and is unacceptable,” said His Majesty on Wednesday (April 16) on Facebook.

Sultan Ibrahim also said that Jalur Gemilang was a symbol of sovereignty and identity of the country.

His Majesty said that the management and editor of the newspaper should have been more sensitive and reviewed its material before publishing it.

Earlier, Sin Chew Daily issued an apology over the design error which had left out the crescent from the Jalur Gemilang.

The Chinese daily said it was an unintentional error made during the design process and have amended the digital version.

KUALA LUMPUR: RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) has offered his services as a lawyer to those detained and slapped with charges in relation with Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH).

The DAP MP said this in responding to Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who questioned Pakatan Harapan’s silence on the use of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) to detain several GISBH leaders and members.

Takiyuddin asked the unity government to state its stand on Sosma, pointing out that PH used to describe the law as draconian.

“For Perikatan Nasional, rationally, we accept Sosma. What we disagree with is the abuse of Sosma, including involving some of these GISBH members,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when debating the Supply Bill 2025.

Rayer interjected and said: “I agree with you. I will oppose (the use of Sosma) as a backbencher. For now, I will offer my services pro bono to defend them (GISBH members) in court.”

Takiyuddin then said Rayer was the only government MP who dared speak out against the use of Sosma, and quipped that he was the “Tiger of Jelutong”.

The moniker had been given to the late former Jelutong MP Karpal Singh, a senior lawyer who was DAP chairman, for his reputation as a spirited legal counsel and Dewan Rakyat member.

Some of GISBH’s top leadership were among the 58 people who were detained under Sosma.

Yesterday, GISBH’s CEO, Nasiruddin Ali, and Adib At-Tamimi Ashaari, the son of the late Al-Arqam founder, were among 21 people charged with being members of an organised criminal group since 2020.

No plea was recorded after they were charged in the Selayang sessions court as the case falls under the High Court’s jurisdiction.

3 Red Sea data cables cut as Houthis launchattacks

While global shipping has already been disrupted through the Red Sea, a crucial route for cargo and energy shipments from Asia and the Middle East to Europe, the sabotage of telecommunication lines could further escalate the monthslong crisis.

The cut lines include Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe India Gateway, Seacom and TGN-Gulf, Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications said. It described the cuts as affecting 25% of the traffic flowing through the Red Sea. It described the Red Sea route as crucial for data moving from Asia to Europe and said it had begun rerouting traffic.

HGC Global Communications described the Seacom-TGN-Gulf line as being two separate cables when it is actually one at the area of the cut, according to Tim Stronge, a subsea cable expert with TeleGeography, a Washington-based telecommunications market research company.

Responding to questions from The Associated Press, Seacom said that “initial testing indicates the affected segment lies within Yemeni maritime jurisdictions in the Southern Red Sea.” It said it was rerouting the traffic that it was able to change, though some services were down.

Tata Communications, part of the Indian conglomerate and behind the Seacom-TGN-Gulf line, told AP that it “initiated immediate and appropriate remedial actions” after the line was cut.

We invest in various cable consortiums to increase our diversity and hence in such situations of a cable cut or snag, we are able to automatically reroute our services,” Tata said.

Other firms behind those lines, which provide data to Africa, Asia and the Middle East, didn’t respond to AP’s queries.

In early February, Yemen’s internationally recognized government in exile alleged that the Houthis planned to attack the cables. The lines appeared to have been cut on Feb. 24, with the organization NetBlocks noticing internet access in the East African nation of Djibouti suffering from interruptions two days later. Seacom serves Djibouti.

But for their part, the Houthis have denied targeting the cables. The rebels blamed the disruptions on British and U.S. military operations, but didn’t offer evidence to support the allegation and have made false claims in the past.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea and surrounding waters over the Israel-Hamas war. Those vessels have included at least one with cargo bound for Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor, and an aid ship later bound for Houthi-controlled territory.

His bizarre beliefs included that the 1996 Port Arthur massacre was a “false flag operation”, that the government was running “re-education camps” and that Princess Diana’s death was a “blood sacrifice”, as well as an opposition to vaccines and Covid lockdowns and support for the sovereign citizen movement.

Now, it has been revealed that at least one of the brothers allegedly interacted with an anti-vax conspiracy theory group, where members were encouraged to share and discuss their views on a range of controversial topics.

While there is no evidence to suggest any member of the group was involved in the events at Wieambilla, the telegram is run by David Oneeglio, a major Australian conspiracy “influencer” who gained a following after emerging as one of the major anti-vaccine, anti-government and anti-lockdown voices during the pandemic.

Gareth even referenced Oneeglio in an anti-lockdown article he wrote for online conspiracy site, Cairns News.

How to stem the tide of PAS influence

Anwar and Erdogan seems to be pretty close and their parties PKR and AKP share some similarities on an ideological level. Could this relationship be further expanded to neutralize the rising tide of PAS influence in Malaysia? I think i remembered the conservative faction within PAS managed to beat back progressives ( called Erdogan faction) from within the fold that posed a challenge to the PAS leadership at the time. The progressive faction was led by Hussam Musa.

Its also because Erdogan is quite a respected figure among Muslims even here. Another good case study would be Jokowi on how he managed to control hardline groups from gaining influence in indonesia. Could expanding ties with Erdogan and Jokowi offer the opportunity to sway voters away from hardline conservative parties such as PAS?

There are rumors that Turkey may visit Malaysia as soon as it can. So, Anwar better not waste the opportunity
