Xvid Final/ Xvid 1.12

I have noticed that some Xvid conversions will not show a picture on my DVD player. If I re-encode with "Ultra Player" the new Xvid is over 1,2GB where as the former was only 350Mb.But Gspot shows both as Xvid codec but different versions.
Do I have to use to such a high content size to ensure good playback or is there a "compromise" ?I have noticed some work and some don't.
