HINDRAF v. UK government

March 30 date for Hindraf suit against British

LONDON: The High Court will hear a suit against the British Government on March 30 for claims on behalf of indentured workers brought from India to work in Malaya during colonial times. It is the second suit to be filed against the British government by the Hindraf civil rights movement, seeking redress for the socio-economic plight of the descendants of indentured Indian labour left behind after the collapse of the British Empire.

The first suit in 2007 lapsed, and Hindraf filed a second suit five years later. Hindraf adviser N Ganesan, in a statement issued here, said the movement had “overwhelming” documentary evidence in taking on the British establishment and calling into question the doings of the Empire over 180 years. Hindraf’s suit claims that the British government, through the Reid Constitutional Commission, had been negligent in its treatment of Malayan Indian and had failed to protect and preserve their rights and interests after independence.

Hindraf also called into question the Constitution drawn up by the Reid Commission, which it called a “compromised” Constitution falling below accepted international standards.

“We are committed to bringing about changes to the lives of the Indian poor and marginalized through these and other similar spirited efforts on the ground,” Ganesan said.

The suit claims that the Reid commission failed to act fairly when it agreed to amendments introduced by the working party, controlled by the Umno-led Alliance party, and failed to keep the original terms of the independent constitutional commission within its framework. Hindraf said the British government had failed the Malayan Indian community by allowing an amended constitution that was drastically different than the one initially recommended by the Reid Commission.

http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...gainst-british/

Tight budget hampers Malaysia’s defense ambitions

Tight budget hampers Malaysia’s defense ambitions

A fully armed RMAF F-18D Hornet on display during LIMA 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: Budget constraints are jeopardizing Malaysia’s defense spending plans, which include replacing ageing fighter jets and beefing up its maritime capabilities, at a time when Beijing is growing more assertive in the disputed South China Sea. While Malaysia has traditionally played down any tensions with China over the contested waterway, it has long expressed concern about piracy and security along its land and coastal borders.

“We have a lot of areas to be concerned about. The Straits of Malacca, the south-western part of the South China Sea and others,” Navy chief Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar told Reuters on the sidelines of an airshow on the Malaysian coastal island resort of Langkawi this week.

“We don’t have enough to cover it all. The best way is synergy, by working together with regional partners we can ensure maritime security,” Jaafar added, referring to possible joint sea patrols among Southeast Asian nations.

Malaysia’s 2015 defense budget of 17.7 billion ringgit ($4.79 billion) does not offer much hope for new kit, given it includes only 3.6 billion ringgit for military procurement. This has been earmarked mainly for the purchase of four Airbus Military A400M cargo planes as well as navy patrol vessels. An A400M was on display at the airshow along with recently acquired Airbus EC725 utility helicopters. A prolonged slump in oil prices is expected to further hurt the net oil exporting nation while heavily indebted state investor 1MDB could drag on public finances.

“Malaysian acquisition plans have been continually postponed for reasons of financial constraints,” said Richard Bitzinger, a security expert at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

Malaysia’s top priority is to replace its ageing Russian MiG-29 fighters with 18 modern jets that would join a fleet of Boeing F/A-18Ds as well as Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30MKM warplanes. Defense officials are assessing Boeing’s newer F/A-18E/F, French firm Dassault’s Rafale, Swedish manufacturer Saab’s Gripen, and the Typhoon from European consortium Eurofighter. Affordability would be key, air force chief General Roslan bin Saad told Reuters at the airshow.

“We are discussing whether we should continue with these (MiG-29) jets or not. Nothing is final yet,” he said.

Malaysian military sources expect the armed forces to push for more procurement funds in the next five-year plan starting in 2016.

“The armed forces want new fighter planes, maritime patrol aircraft, airborne early warning systems and anti-submarine helicopters. The military chiefs, however, are likely to be asked to prioritize their needs,” said one Kuala Lumpur-based security expert who is close to senior military officers.

Naval Base

Malaysia has pursued close economic ties with China, its biggest trade partner but two Chinese naval exercises in 2013 and 2014 around James Shoal, a submerged reef about 80 km (50 miles) off Malaysia’s Borneo island state of Sarawak, shocked Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, Malaysia’s public response to China’s shows of strength and claims to most of the South China Sea has been low-key, unlike fellow Southeast Asian countries the Philippines and Vietnam, which have been more outspoken.

In October 2013, Malaysia announced plans to build a navy base in Bintulu on Sarawak, the closest major town to the James Shoal. Navy chief Jaafar said the base would take a few years to complete and would help in the fight against terrorism, the sabotage of oil rigs and piracy.

“By having our base there, it can help us respond faster,” he said.

Asked if China would be unhappy, he said: “It won’t upset China. This is in our waters.”

Malaysia’s coastal vulnerability was highlighted in 2013 when 100 armed Filipinos landed by boat and launched attacks on Malaysian security forces, sparking a major security crisis.

Paid RM1,000 to splash acid on pregnant woman

Paid to attack mum-to-be

GEORGE TOWN — An odd-job worker told the Sessions Court here he was promised RM1,000 to splash acid on a pregnant woman 11 years ago. Tan Beng Piw said a woman known as Chong Chuk Moi had asked him to splash acid on housewife Loh Foong Nyuk, who was six months’ pregnant at that time, and that he was promised RM1,000 for the task. However, Tan, who was testifying in his defence before Sessions judge Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim, denied carrying out the task.

“I felt pity for the victim because she was pregnant. I was working in Johor when I heard about the acid-splashing incident from a fellow villager in Balik Pulau known as Ah Hui,” he said during cross-examination by DPP Lim Cheah Yit.

Tan also disagreed that he had assaulted the victim’s husband two months before the acid-splashing incident, as he had received a separate RM1,000 fee from Chong.

“I did not hit him, I only threw stones at his car. This was what I said in my recorded police statement,” he added.

Tan, 40, is charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Loh with a corrosive substance in front of a market at 5.30am on May 17, 2004. He is charged with another person still at large under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine or whipping upon conviction. Tan said his employer could verify that he was working as a contract worker in Johor.

Tan was previously charged in 2006 at the Balik Pulau court with malicious use of a corrosive substance to hurt Loh under Section 4 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and whipping, but he jumped bail. He was rearrested on June 4, 2013, and the prosecution decided to charge him under the Penal Code instead following a review. The hearing continues on April 23 and 24.

http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015...man-court-told/

Exemplary Chinese

Promotions restricted for non-Malays a myth: Brig Gen Choon Siang

KUALA LUMPUR: It is pure myth that non-Malays are not keen to join the armed forces because promotion prospects are limited for them, said MIDAS National Blue Ocean Strategy Research Centre senior director, Brig Gen Toh Choon Siang.

“This should be made aware, besides, I see what needs to be done is to implement a more ‘pull factor’ to attract them and I believe this is being done,” he said.

As a country with people of different races, national defence is the responsibility of all, nevertheless, he noted that the spirit of patriotism should be seen from all angles, not only by adorning a uniform. Choon Siang, who is also chairman of the Army’s Chinese Community Committee, gave his views in a special interview with Bernama recently.

However, Choon Siang admitted it is difficult to see Chinese participation in the military now, especially at the lower ranks. The father of two said when he joined the military in the 1970s, it could be said that one-third of army personnel were non-Malays, but now the number had shrunk. He said Chinese participation in the workforce in this country, especially in the armed forces, can be classified into three groups, with the first group such as him who grew up in a military family.

“The second group looks to earnings and promotion, the third group without the requisite interest (in the military or other work) just like to do some business,” he said adding it was difficult to attract the second and third group to join the army.

“If you look at the benefits, in an effort to attract more non-Malays into the Armed Forces the government is actually offering a lot of incentives, allowances and education facilities. On being admitted to the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM), all expenses are borne from hair to toe, they even get an allowance of RM1,600 and on leaving, become an officer,” he said.

At an event last month, Army Chief Gen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor, targeted at least 10 per cent Chinese and Indians from the 4,500 recruits who undergo training every year. Choon Siang, 56, the eighth of nine siblings, served with the army for almost 38 years, and jokingly said that the warrior’s blood flowing in the family was among the factors he was in the armed forces.

He said his family’s legacy in serving in the nation’s military can be traced back to the 1940s. His father Toh Boon Hock joined the British Air Force before the Japanese invasion in 1942, and was involved in World War II fighting against the invading Japanese army, and later served the Customs Department until his retirement.

Meanwhile, Choon Siang’s three older brothers served with Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM). Toh Tiap Keng retired with the rank of commander after serving the Royal Malaysian Navy for more than 30 years while the other two served with the Royal Malaysian Air Force as Captain (B) Toh Choon Hong and Flight Sergeant Toh Choon Kooi. -- Bernama

http://www.nst.com.my/node/76633

Scorpene launched torpedo in South China Sea

KEJAYAAN PENEMBAKAN TORPEDO BLACK SHARK OLEH KAPAL SELAM KD TUN RAZAK

7. Kemasukan kapal selam dalam inventori TLDM bukan sahaja meningkatkan keupayaan Armada TLDM malah melengkapkan keupayaan peperangan tiga dimensi iaitu peperangan bawah permukaan, aras permukaan dan anti-udara.

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=875318995812283

Malaysia, a top destination for Uzbeks

More tourists from Uzbekistan have placed Malaysia as one of their favourite destinations due to the tourist-friendly facilities available and unique cuisine, said Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) director-general, Zulkifly Md Said.

He said that Uzbeks also find Malaysia a Muslim-friendly destination, which practiced moderation, and this has provided a big advantage to Malaysia as majority of the people in Uzbekistan are Muslims.

"They feel safe, secure and they can freely enjoy their stay and travel throughout the country," Zulkifly told Bernama at the one-day Uzbekistan tourism road show held recently.

The road show, organised by the Uzbekistan embassy, was aimed at creating awareness among Malaysians about Uzbekistan and participated by travel agents from Uzbekistan who offered flights and accommodation packages, while at the same time seeking cooperation from local travel agents.

Speaking during the road show, Zulkifly said that ITC, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, welcomed any effort to work hand-in-hand with the Uzbek government in promoting tourism between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Shukor Sabitov, said that the strong ties between the two countries was reflected by the increasing number of Uzbeks visiting Malaysia and Malaysians visiting Uzbekistan, pointing out that more than 2,000 Malaysians visited Uzbekistan last year, while about 11,000 Uzbeks visited Malaysia.

"This shows that despite the travel industry in our country being rather young, it has now become one of the most rapidly growing businesses, supported by the good bilateral relations and the 22 years of diplomatic relations with Malaysia," he told Bernama.

He said that the road show was a good platform to introduce Uzbekistan as a potential tourism destination as it is home to more than 4,000 historical architectural monument and sites, with many having been included in the Unesco World Heritage list and under the protection of the world community.

Sabitov also noted that in 2013, Uzbekistan's inbound tourism grew by 16% and more than two million international tourists visited the country.

Meanwhile, newly appointed general manager of Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, Stephan Sieberg, said that Malaysia’s diverse tourist attractions such as the beaches, islands and vibrant cities, was a plus factor for the country.

"It is a good thing that Malaysia has a lot of diversity within the country, ranging from the beaches, islands and vibrant cities," he said, when asked to comment on the Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014 campaign.

"There is a great variety in this VMY. I am fully convinced that the VMY campaign will drive a lot of attention," he said at an afternoon tea session with reporters recently.

He said that one other plus point for Malaysia was its “healthy growth” over the last few years, pointing out that the economic growth projection of between 5.0 to 5.5% this year showed that Malaysia has a “healthy economy."

However, he also feels that in order to attract more tourists to Malaysia during the campaign, there should be common efforts in order to create demand and expectation.

He said that all the cities in Malaysia and not only Kuala Lumpur should participate in such efforts to ensure the success of the campaign.

To create awareness on what Malaysia can offer to tourists, a good amount of homework and research should also be done on “what you want to present to the world,” he said. – Bernama, February 23, 2014

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/travel/...tion-for-uzbeks

MACC find 20mil in policemen accounts

Anti-graft task force finds RM20 million in police officer’s bank accounts

The six-month graft probe into 60 policemen believed to be involved in corruption and money laundering has made a shocking discovery – one senior officer had amassed RM20 million in several bank accounts, a senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officer told The Malaysian Insider that the senior police officer could not account for the staggering amount in his possession.

"Investigations are still going on. There will be more exposes in the weeks to come," said the source.

The source said it could not be ruled out that there are more cops who had illegally amassed moveable and immovable assets worth millions of ringgit.

"The investigators were shocked to discover the massive amount from this senior cop, but we believe there is more to come," he said.

The 60 cops, the biggest number being investigated by the MACC simultaneously in recent times, are mostly high-ranking officers based nationwide.

The Malaysian Insider learnt that the task force comprises senior officials from the MACC, Bank Negara, the Inland Revenue Board, the National Registration Department, the Immigration Department, the Customs Department, the Securities Commission and the police.

The task force is being spearheaded by Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. It was also recently enlarged as the probe deepens due to the technicalities involved.

The source said the task force was directly answerable to Gani whose officers are assisting in ensuring credible evidence is collected to secure convictions in the courts later.

The Malaysian Insider had reported on January 25 that a senior police officer, one of 60 cops under probe for graft, is among several policemen brokering deals with the MACC to assist in fingering more crooked cops in return for immunity from prosecution.

It was reported that the senior police officer and several others were prepared to name several other senior police officers in return for their freedom.

"Investigations have been going on for several months now and investigators have discovered about 30 senior police officers who are living beyond their means," an official had said then.

"Many of these senior police officers, who are based nationwide, were found to have at least RM1 million or more in their respective bank accounts.

"These officers did not even bother to hide their wealth or attempt to do so," the official had said.

In an earlier report, The Malaysian Insider had stated that a disgruntled policeman's complaint to the MACC marked the beginning of an investigation that has resulted in some 60 policemen being probed.

The policemen were alleged to have collected bribes from operators of illegal businesses in the federal capital. The businesses ranged from illegal gaming cybercafes to massage parlours and vice dens.

Depending on the type of business, each operator paid between RM10,000 and RM50,000 a month to the policemen to avoid being raided and hassled.

Due to the MACC probe, a senior police officer with a "Datuk" honorific was transferred to the Bukit Aman police secretariat.

The Datuk was questioned by the MACC which discovered more than RM6 million stashed away in various accounts.

However, the MACC official had told The Malaysian Insider then that the RM6 million was merely the tip of the iceberg.

As investigations intensified, MACC had also seized luxury vehicles, such as a Range Rover Evoque (worth RM400,000), Nissan Skyline (RM388,000), Toyota Vellfire (RM450,000), BMW 7-series (RM800,000) and Mercedes-Benz E-class (RM400,000) from the suspects.

Besides properties and luxury vehicles, police had also seized a substantial amount of money, jewellery and gold from some of the policemen. – February 23, 2014.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...s-bank-accounts

Tamil school parents take matter to UN

Tamil school parents take matter to UN

PETALING JAYA: Parents of students at the Seaport Tamil School, in Kelana Jaya, here, have submitted a memorandum to the United Nations (UN) and Suhakam in an effort to retain the old school and stop any move to force their children to attend classes at a new school building 4km away. Parents of 51 out of 115 students have refused to move to the the new school. They found it an extra burden financially and inconvenient to send their children to the new school further away.

In December last year, the headmaster under the instruction of the Education Ministry took away all the facilities at the old school, including tables and chairs, to the new building. Save Our School SJK (T) Seaport Movement (SOSS), which consists parents, old students, ex-Seaport estate workers and NGO leaders handed over the memorandum to the UN representative Devendra Patel urging the world body to take measures to the retain the school at its original site.

Devendra Patel said he would take up the issue with the relevant authorities for a permanent solution. SOSS secretary R Kannan told FMT that they were forced to seek the help of the UN because the government was not helping resolve the issue.

“The school has been taken over under the name of development by PKNS in 1965. Founded about 80 years ago, it is the only Tamil school in Kelana Jaya, where there are more than 10,000 Indian families. However, there are still 51 students (28 primary and 23 pre-school) out of the 115 who have refused to move to the new building in Kampung Lindungan, Petaling Jaya,” he said.

Kannan said instead of solving the issue, the ministry had threatened to bar the students from sitting for the UPSR examination.

“We are still teaching the students at the old school with the help of volunteers and NGOs after all the related agencies, including Selangor state government, kept mum on the matter,” he said.

He added that the parents and students had pledged to stay put at the old site until the ministry gave back the operating licence to the school. Earlier this morning, SOSS also forwarded a memorandum to Suhakam, urging the human rights commission to take necessary action to save the Seaport school.

http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...e-matter-to-un/

“Jangan telefon isteri saya encik....

Takut bini tahu

http://www.hmetro.com.my/myMetro/articles/...icle/index_html

http://www.sinarharian.com.my/edisi/perak/...50-sen-1.251113

Isteri pemimpin kerajaan berkongsi cara berjimat

Read more at: http://www.astroawani.com/news/show/tanam-...rjimat-29887?cp
