Parents just retired and started simply invest

Hello everyone!

My parents has just retired and they have allocated about 300-500K to invest in both high and low risk investments, problem is they recently started getting into all these money games of JJPTR, Richway etc, although they somewhat knows the risk such investments carry, they don't mind going for it as a "gamble" while I would much prefer for them to invest in more legit investments.

1) Is there a recommended way of doing this such as hiring a financial advisor to plan out their funds? If yes how do we go about finding one?

2) What type of investments (both high and low risk) are suitable for my parents, they would want to diversify the funds than putting it all in a basket
Battle of mid size SUVs under 140K

Hello F&F!

I did some homework and also read through majority of SUVs thread here. Still I hope for your opinion and recommendation on which is better. I've also added in a poll. If you're the owner/driver of these cars, I would really appreciate your input on it! Sorry for the long post, thank you!

Requirements & Usage:
1) Low FC (Doesn't need to be powerful either)
2) Reliability (very important it doesn't have any major issues, minor ones are granted as all cars will have it's down side)
3) Compact (Mostly city driving)
4) Budget is 140K below, ideally 100K+ (even lower also can since doesn't need to be high tech or fancy)
5) Not going with HRV/CX5 since it's everywhere, not going with Toyota Rush since a lot of forumers says it's crap plus it's Perodua rebadge so low RV I assume.
6) New cars only
7) Doesn't need to be high tech since my father also don't know and don't want to use.
8) Open to any other SUV suggestion aside from the 5 listed.

Here are the selections:

1) Mitsubishi ASX (Around $100K+). Definitely more compact and closer to my budget however doesn't seem to be a lot on road, worry about reliability and fc.

2) Ford Ecoboost (Around $90K). Also very close to my requirements but Ford is quite a "cold" brand for me, also worry about reliability.

3) Hyundai Tucson (Around $130K). Seems quite popular

4) Kia Sportage (Around $110K+). Doesn't see a lot on road, but KIA has definitely up its game on other models

5) Nissan X-Trail (Around $130K+). Have the impression that it's reliable but quite high on our budget

Update:

Thank you everyone for your suggestion!

Today we went for a few test drives though the cars aren't really in the same price range so it's not a comparison.

Honda
- BRV which is I think is 1.5, responsive but sluggish engine due to the weight of the car which is to be expected for this type of car. Interior is very proton-ish tho, looks very very cheap. It is a 60-80K ish car though so can't expect a lot also la..
- Jazz - Since it's just like BRV but smaller. Fun car to navigate around in traffic but we just test it for fun anyway because its quite a feminine car for my dad.

Subaru XV
The highly suggested XV delivers, a very well put together car. Handling of the car should be top of its class compared to other cars in the segment but my dad says the throttle response isn't as good as BRV/Jazz. Right now the price starts at RM110K as they're running a promotion to clear off 2016 models. I think the original price is 129K? With free service on labor only, first service the salesman says is around RM200 though he seems unsure. The blindspots while driving is greatly reduced, very easy to drive. Interior is quite spacious but the default boot is quite small which is alright, can fold down the backseats to extend.

Just a few concerns on XV such as:
- Reliability and cost of spare parts
- maintaining a boxer engine is a concern, can just service anywhere or only to workshops that knows "boxer" engine?
- Fuel consumption I read somewhere on forum is 8-9L/100KM?

We do expect XV to be more expensive to maintain overall and that's alright to pay for a good car, but by how much is the question.

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend recently went to a beauty salon for facial and the beautician took off her necklace and place it aside during the session, after that they could not locate the necklace and it's been missing for days although given the assurance that they will call us immediately once they found it.

The necklace is quite costly, from tiffany and co - beyond that it carries sentimental value as it's the very first gift I gave to her.

Yes in retrospect she should have kept it in her bag or pocket when the beautician took it off.

Moving forward, what would be a good next course of action? Things just doesn't vanish out of thin air, if it's missing then someone must have took it.

iPad2 Screen unresponsive

Hello everyone,

I've did a search on forum and gotten some information but not all I need hence I'm creating yet another iPad screen thread.

My screen has gone unresponsive and done a factory restore to no avail so I'm pretty certain it's a hardware issue. I place the iPad inside my bag while traveling, guess it must have gotten damaged somehow.

Went to an apple authorized store and they say I gotta pay $1k plus and they'll replace it which is not feasible at all.

Anywho can someone please help recommend me a shop that can fix my iPad2 screen? Ideally in johor bahru and a reliable shop that you've used before.

I'm currently in KL but going back JB tomorrow. I'm okay with KL shops just that I'm worried how they're gonna send it back to me in JB unless they can fix it within hours.

If anyone has any past experience do share, such as the price, duration etc.

Many thanks!

Places to source for talents

Hello everyone,

I'm starting up a design studio here in Johor bahru and I'm only sourcing for local talents, people who can physically work in our studio.

I'm having a hard time sourcing for local talents, tried going through the freelancer list on lowyat, I also found a few at coroflot.com . Thought of Deviantart but their user geographical search has been disabled for privacy reason.

I'm only looking for highly talented and experience designers AND programmers. Some coding knowledge will be a plus for the Designer position but not required.

I will make a job post here on lowyat and jobstreet etc soon with all the details but for now I'll like to know if there's any better places to source for talents, particularly local talents in Johor bahru.

Cheers!
