Hi guys , this is a very good DSLR for amateur shutterbugs. For the record, this is my first DSLR camera and it has been with me for a couple of years. So far its performance has been up to par for a starter like me. It performs best under well-lit condition, which is a very good starting point for those interested in photography. It is well taken care of, I treated it like a baby. Its shutter count is only at 9851, still a very long long way to go. PTPTN -> IPTS. Worth it?

It's not a problem for wealthy families to afford colleges here in Malaysia. After finishing SPM last year, most of my friends had already gone to private unis/colleges for A levels, while some decided to do STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) majors locally in IPTS. That leaves the clueless bunch of us who are still torn between going to IPTS or STPM.

Let's not talk about scholarships and those who are filthy rich. I'm astonished by how my friends (who most of them belong to the middle-income group) decided to venture into college banking on PTPTN to support their tuition fees. Granted, the low interest offered by PTPTN does seem alluring enough, leading parents to think IPTS is a good 'investment'. One of my friends had gone to INTI International Uni for Foundation in Science, he plans to do Mechanical Engineering later. Based on the brochures on its website, the total tuiton fees for both Foundation in Science and Mech Eng comes to a whopping RM98,600 (RM17,800+RM80,800).

And PTPTN only gives out RM16,500/year maximum for the 4-year degree. The total amount borrowed from PTPTN would then be RM66,000. Let's assume the rest of the tuition fees (RM98,600-RM66,000=RM32,600) were paid by his parents.

By the time my friend graduates, he would have a hefty RM66,000 of debts to be paid off. Not to mention the interest albeit low. Some people said after 10 years, the amount would mean nothing. I think that's not true, given the constant price hike of consumer goods that happens every year, even surviving alone can be hard. And we all know our salary increment will not outstrip the demand.

My question is, isn't doing STPM a better route for middle-income families? After all, an IPTA and an IPTS graduate get the same amount of salary here in Malaysia. I'm taking UM for example, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering only cost RM7,865/year as opposed to RM20,200/year at INTI. And you graduate with minimal debts.

Torn between chasing my dream and being realistic

Hello, let me introduce myself first. I'm about to sit for my SPM examination, and I'm not academically inclined. And I know I should have paid full concentration on my studies but what's boggling my mind is my future.

A month ago, I discussed with my parents what I am going to study after SPM and everything went well, they have already given the green lights to me, that is to pursue Biotechnology in Germany.

Until last night, I found out that all this while I had been lying to myself. My true passion is for music, particularly, playing the trombone and the trumpet. (Not that I don't like biology, I like music more.) I used to play the trombone and the trumpet in my school's marching band and it always excites me when I know I'm going to play the instrument again the next day. I'm not trying to brag but that's the only thing I have both passion and talent for.

What's holding me back is the fact that a musical career wouldn't earn much, in fact, it's even hard to make ends meet later on. Okay, what I wanted to do is to play the trombone or the trumpet (still undecided between these two) in an orchestra, that's the thing I wanted to do. You may ask me to teach, which the earnings are quite lucrative, but that's not something I would do as my main career. To be honest, I'm not from a rich family, my parents just have enough money to send me abroad for studies. And of course, as a son, I want to earn much money to let them live comfortably, if not luxury.

And then I have this idea, because the America education is more liberal, maybe I could pursue Biotechnology as my major and music my minor? That may be a compromise between my current volatile situation but I'm not sure if it is possible.

I need some advice on my current situation. Also, my planning is to settle down in the States after graduating although it may be virtually impossible. Nevertheless, I hope fellow experienced sifus could shed some light.

Majority of teachers not proficient in English

The forum titled “English Proficiency: Does the Education System Support the Needs of the Workplace?” was held in conjunction with The Star's English For More Opportunities initiative.

Dr Khair added that the other major finding of the survey was that two in three students failed to meet the basics in English proficiency.

“This was based on the comparison of the students' results in SPM English and Cambridge 1119 standards,” he said, adding that the survey was conducted among 13,000 students.

Dr Khair said the survey was an initial review done prior to the Preliminary Report Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Sept 11.

In relation to the curriculum and teaching in line with the strengthening of the English language, he said there were various initiatives with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Malaysia.

“We also have English Teaching Assistant programmes as well as contract teachers employed to teach the language.”

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) Penang branch chairman Ng Weng Tutt said the union lauded the proposal in the blueprint for the upskilling of teachers.

“The upskilling of teachers is in the right direction. After five years, teachers need to be sent for courses.

“We want the Government to upgrade all teachers, and not only from a certain group, from time to time, and also to send them for training.

“The NUTP wants the Government to have more well-trained teachers to teach English and English literature in schools,” he said.

Ng also said the union urges all parties, especially NGOs, to place equal emphasis on all languages.

“We support what the Government has proposed in the blueprint but there is still room for improvement.

“We are getting feedback from teachers before they are brought up to the Education Ministry,” he said.

Seven men were executed by firing squad in the Saudi Arabian city of Abha in March, despite calls from UN independent experts urging authorities not to proceed with the executions.

It had been expected that the men executed in March would be beheaded. However unconfirmed reports said the authorities had been forced to resort to firing squads because of a shortage of swordsmen.

At least 69 people were executed in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Sup /k/ so I was in Paris airport that day giving my passport to this old lady officer to be cleared and then suddenly she asked me this.

"I've heard about the climate in Malaysia - which is located north of Singapore right? Any other significant things over there?"

I hesitated a while not sure what to say cause I've never really introduced Msia to a stranger so I just bluntly said,
"Yeah I'm sure you know we don't live on trees." I said this because my aunt was also in Paris and some stupid French said to her Msians live on trees.

Then I continued, "We do have a potpourri of food like nasi lemak, roti canai and chicken rice here."

The look she gave me was priceless when she returned my passport. I'm sure she wasn't satisfied with my answer, maybe she's even offended by my first statement hahaha.

But whatever, how do you introduce Malaysia?
