QUOTE

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/11/1/nation/9810919&sec=nation

SINGAPORE: Asean countries are looking at producing their own military equipment for the region in an effort to reduce operational costs, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said Asean countries had spent about RM25bil last year to buy military equipment.

“If we can produce our own (military) equipment, we can save a large amount of money,” he told reporters after meeting Singapore Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong here yesterday.

Dr Zahid said Malaysia hoped to become the regional hub for the production of military equipment.

“We submitted a proposal to this effect at the Asean Defence Ministers Meeting in Bali recently.

“Under the proposal, Asean members will produce military equipment component parts before they are sent to Malaysia to be assembled,” he said, adding that the idea was being considered by Asean countries.

On the Five Power Defence Arrangement (FPDA) meeting in Singapore, Dr Zahid said the member countries had sent about 4,000 military personnel to the island in conjunction with the group’s 40th anniversary celebration.

FPDA comprises Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Singapore and Malaysia.

On the Auditor-General’s Report 2010, which said the ministry had overspent by RM6.5mil, Dr Zahid said the ministry had not exceeded the allocated budget.

“The over-spending was due to foreign currency fluctuations,” he added.

how does currency fluctuation leads to over-spending by 6.5bil? can anyone explain this?

i thought ringgit was strong last year.. so importing anything should be cheaper.. and also, how does a weaker currency leads to over-spending? any purchase should have been sealed by contracts, isn't it? if it is already getting expensive, then don't buy..

http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/highlights/...as-for-all.html

Nazri: Time for quotas for all

KUALA LUMPUR: Privileges and benefits offered to bumiputeras in terms of equity participation and quotas should be extended to include other races as well, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz. After more than five decades of independence, it is time for minority groups to be given allocations as well, he said in an exclusive interview with The Edge Financial Daily late last week.

“Why don’t we do it (the allocations or quotas) for all races, what’s wrong with it? In almost any business locally, the clientele is Malaysian, so why not have Malaysian and not just bumi (putera) equity participation… apa salahnya?

“What is wrong with such a policy? There must be allocations for all Malaysians. What is so wrong to give to Chinese Malaysians or Malaysians of Indian origin?” he said.
Nazri’s views come on the back of a recent controversy about bumiputera equity and quotas, where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was quoted by the media as saying at the Khazanah Megatrends Forum 2011 in September that compulsory bumiputera equity quotas would be abolished.

However, a few days later in early October, after an Ummo supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Najib denied saying anything on the abolishment of bumiputera quotas and privileges, and said he was merely urging bumiputera entrepreneurs to be more self-sufficient.

“I absolutely did not say that (bumiputera) quotas will be abolished,” Najib was reported to have said after the Umno supreme council meeting, when asked about the abolishment of bumiputera equity and quotas.

The issue of bumiputera quotas and equity has been at the forefront especially after Najib announced economic reforms soon after becoming prime minister. In July 2009, the 30% bumiputera ownership requirement for companies seeking to list on Bursa Malaysia was removed as part of a major overhaul of the government’s economic policies.
Earlier, in April the same year, the government removed the 30% bumiputera equity requirement for 27 services sub-sectors including social services, tourism, transport, business services and computer and related services, in line with the Asean trade liberalisation.

Other quotas still in practice include the 25% public spread for listed companies, 50% of which must be held by bumiputeras.
Explaining Najib’s situation, Nazri said: “It’s not easy for him (Najib), Umno is a Malay party of which he is president. Not all see things or think like him…I know many Malaysians say he is cautious.

“He can’t help it, he’s the prime minister of Malaysia and president of Umno, so he has to tread cautiously,” he added.
The 30% bumiputera equity requirement came with the establishment of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971.

Among the reasons for the 30% bumiputra equity quota was that in 1971, only 2.4% of public equity was owned by bumiputera investors, while foreign ownership was 63.3%.
The NEP was aimed at reducing the disparity in income between bumiputras and non-bumiputras. Although the NEP was slated to end in 1990, it was succeeded by the National Development Policy in 1991, which still had the spirit of the NEP.

While the NEP was welcomed by most bumiputras, some bumiputras, albeit a minority, were also critical of it, stating that they have become too reliant on the NEP.
The wider business community, however, is also worried the policy may hinder entrepreneurism, competitiveness and foreign investments (FDI) in the country, as Malaysia faces an increasing threat from its neighbours, as well as China, for FDI.

Anti-climax in ‘Seks Islam’ book

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...04849&sec=focus

The Obedient Wives Club (OWC) controversial pocket-sized Malay-language sex guide sold exclusively to its members is more of a mother’s labour of love for her son who was getting married.

IF I got RM50 for every time someone asked me a copy of Seks Islam, I would be as rich as Alex Comfort, the author of The Joy of Sex.

On Oct 21, in Petaling Jaya, at a press conference organised by Obedient Wives Club (OWC), the author of Seks Islam, Perangi Yahudi Untuk Kembalikan Seks Islam Kepada Dunia (Islamic Sex, Fighting Jews to Return Islamic Sex to the World), Hatijah Aam (pic) gifted the book to journalists.

Speaking via Skype from Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Hatijah, the OWC founder, told the club members: “Please present the book now to the media representatives.”

“We don’t want to hide it. We want to be transparent.

“We want to show that we are not hiding our (sex) knowledge,” she said.

And the dozen or so journalists became proud owners of the controversial pocket-sized Malay-language sex guide sold exclusively to OWC members for RM50.

Instantly, When I – @philipgolingai – “live” tweeted that I had a copy, I received several requests for a copy.

In my office, almost everybody I met was excited over my owning THE book except for this one guy who got aroused for the wrong reason. He thought I had a copy of the Auditor-General’s Report.

It seems everyone I knew lusted for the knowledge on how to graduate from kindergarten-level sex to PhD-level sex.

Who wouldn’t want to read a book advocating “spiritual sex” (a man could “come” spiritually to all his wives simultaneously even though they’re in Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Johor)?

And, by the day, the book is getting more notorious. Last week, the Sarawak government banned the distribution of Seks Islam in the state.

As my friends flipped through the book, their initial remarks were: “No picture ah?” or “No graphics ah? All words?”.

Sorry to disappoint, but the book isn’t the Comfort’s titillatingly illustrated Joy of Sex.

In fact, the 115-page booklet was a mother’s labour of love for her son who was getting married.

The preamble to Seks Islam – from its research – OWC found that what a woman sexually provided her husband was 10% of what his real sexual needs were.

“The wife thinks her 10% is 100%. She’s also dumb not to want to be taught about sex. She has a prejudiced perception that sex is obscene,” wrote Hatijah.

Chapter one explains why OWC was formed, chapter two talks about Hatijah’s husband, the late Al-Arqam founder Ashaari Muhammad, chapter three about giving 100% loyalty to your husband, chapter four is a guide for the future groom and chapter five is a letter to the bride.

Yawn. Yawn. Nothing that really makes me blush.

Hatijah also explained the difference between a man and a woman.

A man is held hostage by his desire. In order words, just like peeing, when a man has to go, he has to go.

A woman, however, can turn off and turn on her sexual desire as if it were a switch.

“If a wife loves her husband, she must instantly fulfil his sexual needs,” she advocated.

The climax of the book is in its conclusion.

Hatijah writes about her two-month training with Ashaari to become a heroic and angelic wife.

And she revealed her late husband could perform sex simultaneously with his wives, spiritually.

“Intimacy is much more pleasurable and ‘lighter’ through spiritual sex compared with physical sex,” she wrote.

Hatijah writes about seks seren-tak (simultaneous sex) but she does not reveal how to do it spiritually.

Perhaps, as she said in the press conference, what was taught in Seks Islam was just the tip of the iceberg (20%) of her sex knowledge.

So what has the book – as its title suggests – got to do with Jews?

From what I gather Jews have been propagating “extremely pornographic” illicit sex.

Am I missing something in life?

I’m not sure what I was expecting from the book. Techniques on how to please a Uranus chick with eight breasts?

For all its hype, reading the hyped book was an anti-climax.

HYPOCRITES in PAS, wat say you?

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...0056&sec=nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wants everyone to respect the government's decision on the policy of Empowering Bahasa Melayu and Strengthening the English Language.

He said the decision to abolish the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English should also be accepted by all parties.

He said the country's education system would be in chaos should the government allow parents the freedom of choice as to which medium they wanted.

Muhyiddin helping Tan Sri Emeritus Dr Ismail Hussein, who received the Outstanding Figure of Malay Literary 2011 award, with his songkok at the function. AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star. "It will be difficult for the Education Ministry to cater to the schools and there's also the question of providing teachers.

"We know that some of our English teachers are not up to the mark, so if a school chooses English but doesn't have good teachers it won't work," the deputy prime minister said at the 8th Malay Literary and Language Congress here.

Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, addressed fears by certain quarters that the policy meant less attention would be given to English. He gave the assurance that the language will not be marginalised.

The Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia or PAGE had earlier appealed to the government to maintain the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English or allow parents a choice in the matter.

"We have introduced a few initiatives, such as improving the English syllabus in schools, to make it more attractive and effective and have increased weekly lessons from 240 to 300 minutes," he said.

"We have brought in native speaker teachers and placed them throughout the country as master teachers. It appears to be an effective way to monitor our English teachers," he added.

"We are also in the midst of training 10,000 English teachers at the Malaysian Teachers Training Institute," he said.
how smart phones and tablets change our life

there are a lot of 'smarties' who like to multitask. they use these smart devices anytime and anywhere, no matter walking, dating, dining or meeting. perhaps they didn't realize or just acting plain ignorant to their surroundings. their so called 'multitasking' is bringing inconvenience to others.

first example: they tend to walk so slowly that they almost stop in the middle of the walkway.. this is blocking the way of other ppl who are rushing for time.. if you want to use your smart device, stop and step aside.. don't block the way.. you are 'multitasking' at the expense of others

second example: a group of friends gathered to catch up with each other.. and at least 5 out of 10 ppl are playing around with their devices.. you think you are multitasking by catching up with your friends and using your smart devices? in fact, you are not respecting your friends by doing this and you might as well stay at home

the irony is that most of the time, these ppl are not having something urgent.. but they are only playing games or watching videos!!

i am not against smart devices and i do agree that these smart devices bring the world on our fingertips.. but they have to be used appropriately or 'smartly', isn't it?
