Wi-Fi optimum setup question

So I had Time Fibre Broadband installed today 500mbps. So I specified the router to be installed in a corner work room of 1,400 sqf apartment, as that corner room is my workstation and I needed the modem near it for Ethernet. Unfortunately, that left with 25% of the unit, especially my room, with a very weak signal.

I was researching mesh, and thinking of the optimal setup.

My thoughts along two choices:

1) Pull a LAN cable from the corner room to the living room which is in the other corner (let it ride along the door * floor lines), covering it with casing. Install a mesh-WiFi hub at the living room with that LAN cable, and then plug the mesh satellites into other areas (e.g. my room).

2) Install the mesh hub in the corner room itself near the modem, and then the satellites in the living room and my room (which would mean overkill reception in my corner work room, having wired and two broadcasters which is my router and main mesh hub).

Is it possible to have a mesh hub not to initiate through a wired cable ala repeaters? Or is it possible that there is a router I can buy which is powerful enough to cover the entire unit, replacing the original router.

What are good mesh brands to consider? I don't mind paying slightly more to ensure high quality Wi-Fi receptions in key areas.

I'm kinda inexperienced in the setup, hence I appreciate any advice i can get.

Edit: I'm also concerned of the sole power socket in the study room, would it get overloaded with a rig + monitor + speakers + modem + router + mesh all on it?

Headhunter payout

I've always been curious how the pay structure of a headhunter is like.

What is obvious is that a % of the successful candidate salary is charged as fee to the hiring company, but I was also made aware some time back that it is actually staggered instead of a single upfront payment.

So an employee resigning right after joining is not good news for the headhunter.

Anyone can shed light on this matter?

Worse still, calls and hangs up. Google suggests that it is HLA. Interestingly, not only did they add some grief to my life via miselling of their credit shield, they further worsen it by calling me multiple times and hanging up recently. Last straw when it interrupted my sleep on a weekend.

What are my upgrade options?

Posting here instead of the rig-recommendation thread as this is more specific.

My rig was purchased in 2010 with the below specs.

Intel Core i5 760 (upgraded Heatsink, I think is CM Hyper 212)
Asus P7H55
Kingston 8 GB ram
Gigabyte GTX460
Samsung HDDs
Lite On DVDRW
Silverstone ST50F-ES 500W PSU
CM Elite 430 RM149
Dell IPS 23inch monitor

- What GPU these days are bang-for-buck, such as GTX 970? Is it compatible with my mobo?
- If upgraded, will my CPU be a bottleneck?
- PSU, sufficient for the recommendations?

Well, I was also thinking of having a dual-monitor setup. Mostly use my PC for web-surfing/gaming/movies, but nothing hardcore. I don't spend much time gaming due to priorities, but if I do I'd like to able to max settings and not worried about an optimum setting (I don't accept stuttering - I'd sacrifice visuals for smooth gameplay).

Also thinking bout getting a gaming wheel, but it seems that product progression on that side of the road seems to have achieved no progress from years ago (still the same Logitech G27).

Budget is... not an issue. I'm looking to replace parts only anyways.

Appreciate any inputs on the hardware scene these days. Not in a hurry to do anything.

Mahjong Table

So quick one guys who has been doing shopping, have you seen Mahjong tables on sale?

Thinking of getting one, might even consider the auto-shuffler versions just for the novelty.

Any specialised shops I can go and have a look at the tables? (I know the online e-commerce has them, but kind of a risk if it doesn't turn out okay).

Video conversion issues

Posting here instead of Multimedia as it seems rather dead there.

I have a .mov file which I play using VLC. Problem with the file is that the timer stops at x:xx, but it actually plays beyond that. As a result, when I convert it to another file format, it stops at x:xx instead of the full video.

Anyways I can fix the timer/length of the video so the converting software is able to capture all of it?

Thanks!

What is that canto song?

There's this Cantonese song, very well known, I think most of us who go karaoke would know this song (even the non-chinese singers). I suspect is Jacky Cheung but I can't be certain.

I haven't listened to it in a very long time, and the only part of the lyric I remember "ngoi chi yao". I think towards the end the chorus has background singers.

Any assistance, please?

Hi, as per topic, I was wondering are there any common settings that will cause this?

Using a headset with some integrated soundcard (Realtek).

Even when I mute my mic, playing anything that comes out directly from the soundcard will cause it to feed to mic.

Causing alot of trouble to me; I can't play music while gaming with skype. The music feeds directly to my mic.

Try all kinds of settings but meh. Software I am using is called VIA HD Audio Deck.

Thanks for the help.

Need some help for the title of a movie I can't remember.

The story goes like this: A couple goes on a holiday near a lake, met a bunch of naughty teenagers. Teenagers placed broken bottles behind the couple's vehicle, tyre burst, confronts them, ends up the dog dies. Teenagers angry, and from here on it becomes a thriller. Man had his body sliced in a torture scene, the woman died at the end presumably by the teenagers' parents who wanted to hush things up.

Make this quick and simple, it seems that now all the sites have an additional tilde infront of the sub-domain.
e.g www.domain.com/john
is now www.domain.com/~john

Every single site within that server is like that. Why? Is it intentional, or is this due to uh someone 'screwing' up?

Sorry I can't make this any clearer or I missed out info, I'm not savvy with Unix.
