HTPC Build for 55 inch LED

Hi All.

so i'm putting together an HTPC rig for a colleague. he just bought a 55inch LED TV. he already has an amplifier with HDMI input and output. his wife wants to do a little CAD though. here's the spec of what i'm getting him:

Athlon II X3 440

GIGABYTE 880GM-USB3 AM3 AMD880G/SB710 USB3 mATX

GIGABYTE ATI HD 5570

Coolermaster Elite 341 case

Coolermaster Extreme 500watt power supply

Geil Value 4gb ddr3

LG optical drive

Western Digital 1TB Green

Would REALLY appreciate everyone's input on whether this build is ok for him. no gaming btw. one issue though is i have NO experience on HTPC builds, so i'm not sure how easy it is for him to connect the VGA card to the amplifier (through hdmi) and for it to output hdmi to the 55inch LED at optimum level (he'll be watching blu-ray stuff, so i think this card can handle both blu-ray vid and sound?)

Windows wont Boot on Clean Install (Acer Laptop)

Hi All.

I'm currently trying to do a clean install of Windows 7 on my brother's Acer Extensa 4230. It came preinstalled with Vista basic.

So after installing windows (first formatting the C: drive in windows setup), when the laptop boots up it does not go into windows but rather into the "Acer eRecovery Management". the three options are: restore system from factory default...restore system from user's backup....and exit.

The first 2 are greyed out, so i can only EXIT. when i try repairing through the windows installation cd, nothing works.

I noticed when installing windows however that there is a partition particularly for the acer backup (PQSERVICE), i think thats just standard stuff on acer laptops. will my problem be fixed if i delete that partition (PQSERVICE) meant for acer backup? I have stuff on my other partition (d:data) that is VERY important, so need to make sure whatever i do stuff in there does not disappear. many thanks!

New Belkin Router Reduces Download Speed

Hi everyone.

I recently purchased the Belkin Surf N300 Wireless Router Modem. There was no problem setting up the router and getting every computer in the house connected to it. Surfing the internet is fine, barely any random disconnects (just a few, turning on and off fixed that).

However I noticed that ever since I started using this router, my download speeds are around 1/2 the speed of what i was getting with my older router (a zyxel that came with the internet package). I am on a 8mbps connection, so torrents and direct dload speeds are usually something like 950-1000kbps. Speedtest.net usually gave me around 8.5mbps. The Belkin router gives me around 420kbps torrents and direct download, with speedtest.net giving me around 3.50 mbps. Switching back to the older router puts me back at the normal 900-1000 range.

I've emailed belkin but received nothing back. Any input would be highly appreciated, many thanks in advance!

Well like it says on the title and description...anyone interested in playing this awesome co-op game???

i recently started playing it again and am totally addicted (again). thought it would be cool to play with some human players...maybe on hamachi on something and we can have voice chat over teamspeak or xfire or whatever. i'm sure it'll b lotsa fun..i'm done with exams so kinda just lounging around. anyone intersted just post here!! all we need are 4 ppl at the same time anyways

Materials in 3DMax 9

When i open up my file on a new computer on 3dmax9, the materials are not there. when i try to replace it with the materials i already used, which are jpeg, it automatically goes to some IFL image file. any ideas? its urgent....assignment due!! thanks!

got this really weird problem that recently started...dont recall adjusting any problems it just happened one day. searched for spyware, malware, adware, viruses, turned out a few trojans but other than that nothing and it didnt fix anything. help!!

itunes incompatible with windows X64

hi folks. i recently installed window X64 (64bit edition) to support all my ram. I've been using itunes for the past few years, even though my ipod died awhile back. i really loved it cuz of the simple interface, easy to organize playlists, getting album art, organizing my music folders etc.

problem now is itunes doesnt support windows x64. i kept getting some errors so when i checked the itunes site my fears were confirmed!

i really dont like the wmp interface for some reason, and was wondering if you guys can recommend some software most similar to itunes in the sense that i can just simply make playlists on the fly and drag and drop music into them just like itune's interface. it doesnt have to arrange my music folder. i just like how when u open itunes all ur playlists are on teh side and u just click them. support for auto-dloading podcasts would be a plus but not super necessary. thanks in advance

AMD's Graphics Partners Given Green Light to Introduce 2900GT

Seems like AMD is really stepping up their game after being dormant for awhile. The past 2 weeks have seen the introduction of both the 2900pro and the 2950pro. AMD's price/performance is as attractive as always.

Some excerpts from the link for you lazy folks:
"...ATI Radeon HD 2900 GT graphics cards will be equipped with cut-down ATI R600 chips with 240 unified shader processors and 256-bit memory interface, according to graphics cards makers. It is unclear whether the amount of texture units and render back ends was also reduced from what the fully-featured code-named R600 GPUs offer. Add-in graphics cards suppliers will equip Radeon HD 2900 GT boards with 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1600MHz, whereas the chip will be clocked at 600MHz. i noticed in the specs that it only supports pci express 8X bandwidth, not 16. i'm usin an x1950pro 512mb. is that going to cause any performance drop? still need it to game while i RMA my msi. thanks for any input

hi folks.

just thought i'd start a thread for this uber awesome game. been playing it since the SNES days. anyways, i'm playing it on the 360 now. its almost a direct port of the gamecube version. having loads of fun. anyone else playing this? i'm stuck on level 8 of the game. could really use some help as well. i tried googling for a walkthrough, but they only have the gamecube version and the levels are kinda diff for some of them. cud use some help

Localised Version of original games?

i was on pcgame.com.my and i came across the 'localised version' of stalker.

has anyone purchased this version or any of the other localised ones? whats the diff with the ones that are normal priced (120++) cuz the localised ones are only 79ish. glad to see them coming out with more affordable authentic games. thailand's had them for like a decade, was wondering when the gamers here would be as lucky anyways, input please!!

Streamyx or Macrolynx for gaming?

hi everyone.

i'm moving to seri maya condo on jln jelatek most likely this week. i learnt that streamyx is available, however there is also this ISP called macrolynx. they offer a 1mbps connection for only rm55. does anyone have experience with this ISP? i keep hearing that they are good for surfing, and some complain of BT in other forums. but what i am concerned about is gaming.

i tried streamyx in a condo next to seri maya, gaming here is horrible. WoW gets like 8k ping.....i think its cuz the IP is usually around 60.xx range.

so yeah, please let me know which one you would recommend for gaming.

the macrolynx has a 150 installation fee, and i can choose to pay for 3 months (so 150+165=315)

the streamyx is 77/month for the promotion now, but have to pay deposit and 88 installation fee, in the end comes down to almost 300 if i'm not mistaken.

i'm not SO concerned about BT speeds. as long as i can use skype, Teamspeak, XFIRE, MSN, and play games like WoW, BF2142, NWN online, i'm happy!

hi everyone! my bro's pc got some weird issues. the following are the specs:

amd barton 2500+
1gig kingstom ddr400 ram
abit nf7-s
asus x800pro
enermax psu
seagate hdd

anyways, the problem is that when i installed BF2142 on it, it lags like unplayable even at the LOWEST settings with EVERYTHING off. i know its quite an old pc, but i'm sure its powerful enough to play bf2142. even my neighbor's 6200 can play. so i checked the settings, and under the smartgart the AGP slider is on 'OFF' instead of 8x. so when i move it back, it says requires restart. after restart, it still reverts back to off. so i turned off vpu recover, still same problems. some help please??? i wanna play BF2142!! thanks in advance

oh, i've tried various ati drivers even omega drivers. same problem!

weird lag/corruption in few games

hi guys. got a weird problem... first, here are my specs:

AMD X2 3800+ (AM2), stock speed, stock hsf
MSI K9N ULTRA
BBA X800XL stock speed (driver: catalyst 6.7, tried 6.8 same problems)
Muskin ddr2 1gb stock speed
western digital 160gb 8mb sata
coolermaster real power 450watt
creative sb live 5.1

now for the problem....my pc is around 2-3 weeks old...running fine. games such as halflife2, prey, swat 4, fear combat has NO problems whatsoever.

BUT...in neverwinter nights, need for speed most wanted, warcraft 3, i have the same issue when playin them, sorry if its hard to explain...in nfs:mw, the game is 'too fast' that there's obvsiuly something wrong. like the frames skip or somethign, i cant control what is going on. its like a millisecond lag followed by VERY fast bursts of fps. in warcraft 3, there is lag even at the lowest settings...and in neverwinter nights, same issue as nfs:mw...like when i click for my character to move to a certain part of the screen, rather than walking/running there, he just 'appears' there all the sudden, short bursts of intense speed. and noticable corruption of textures as well.

i know this is an odd problem, sorry if i have trouble describing it. PLEASE HELP ME!!

7900gt cant play SWAT 4?

everygame plays fine, even oblivion on full...but when play swat 4, crashes b4 game begins. on friends computer, plays fine. installed latest nvidia drivers...any ideas?

hi everyone. i havnet played WoW in almost a year... i was wondering if anyone connecting to either of the above ip address has problems playing wow? mainly i get 60.48 and 60.50.
cuz if u are having problems i wont renew my account. i've heard alot of complaints here, but just want to make sure whether or not this ip will play WoW proper. i usually play after 6 pm. thanks for any info!!! happy WoWing
