interfacing logitech joystick

guys i am on a project to take an input from my logitech joystick and output it to my microcontroller via serial communication. i am well versed with c programming and basic c++ programming. i dont seem to understand how to use the microsoft direct input.. can anyone help me. i just need to know how to input the x axis and the y axis values so i can manipulate it and retransmit it via serial to my microcontroller i have no problem in the serial communication... even if a simple program to jsut take the x axis values and y axis values and cout it will do as i would be able to continue from there
