Explosions hit Coptic churches in Tanta, Alexandria
At least 21 people dead in blast inside Coptic Christian church in Tanta, as second church is struck in Alexandria.

At least 21 people have been killed in an explosion inside a church in the Egyptian Nile delta city of Tanta, local media reported, as state television said another explosion killed 11 in front of a church in Alexandria.

The first attack occurred in the Coptic church of Mar Girgis, also known as St George, which was packed with worshippers marking Palm Sunday, a Christian feast commemorating the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the cause of the blast was not yet known.

Egypt's state television reported that at least 69 people were wounded.

Several hours after the bombing in Tanta, another explosion hit in front of Saint Mark's church in Alexandria, killing at least 11 people, the health ministry said.

Media reports said another 21 people were wounded in the attack, which state TV said was a suicide bombing.

Mahjoob Zweiri, associate professor at Qatar University, told Al Jazeera that Tanta has seen several attacks in the past.

"The area and Christians both have witnessed such accidents before. There is a good percentage of Christians in this area and other non-Muslims too," Zweiri said.

"I believe when there are such religious events in the country, authorities should take security measures into consideration as there are always chances of attacks," he added.

Timothy Kaldas, non-resident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, said the attacks were designed to create sectarian strife.

"It is alarming to see a specific religious group being targeted, which is going to rattle the Coptic community and many Egyptians in general," Kaldas added.

Copts repeatedly targeted

The bombings were the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt's Christian minority, who make up about 10 percent of the population and have been repeatedly targeted by armed groups.

They also come just weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit Egypt.

CBC TV showed footage from inside the church in Tanta, with a large number of people gathered around what appeared to be lifeless, bloody bodies covered with papers.

A bombing at Cairo's largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49 in December, many of them women and children, in the deadliest attack on Egypt's Christian minority in years.

KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), yesterday announced a 6.30 sen dividend for a unit of the Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 (ASW 2020) for the financial year ending Aug 31, 2016.

The dividend was a decline of 10 sen a unit from the 6.40 sen declared last year.
Speaking at his maiden press conference as PNB chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said the income distribution this year would involve a total payment of RM1.146bil and benefit 878,000 unit holders, who currently hold 18.193 billion units of ASW 2020.

He said the 6.30 sen dividend was commendable considering volatilities surrounding the local market this year, which had been affecting the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI’s (FBM KLCI) performance.

Up until Aug 24, ASW 2020 had recorded a gross income of RM1.394bil.
From this amount, profit from the sale of shares contributed RM735.83 million or 52.8%, whole dividend yield income from investee companies contributed RM451.7mil or 32.4%.

The remaining RM206.84mil or 14.8% was derived from short-term instruments and other income.

The income distribution would be reinvested automatically in the from of units, which would be credited to the unit holders’ accounts on Sept 1.

All transactions for ASW 2020 have been suspended from yesterday until Aug 31 to facilitate the computation of income distribution.
Unit holders can update their accounts at any ASNB branches or agents nationwide beginning Sept 1. - Bernama

NEW YORK: In a new development linked to the 1MDB corruption scandal, a former Hong Kong-based investment fund is suing Goldman Sachs for conflict of interest in advising a 2011 Malaysian bank merger.

Primus Pacific Partners said on Tuesday (Jul 26) that Goldman and its then managing director in Southeast Asia, Tim Leissner, concealed its close relationship with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak when the bank was recruited to advise EON Capital partly owned by Primus, in its US$1.7 billion sale to Malaysia's Hong Leong Bank (HLB).,

Najib "had close family and business ties with HLB" giving him an interest in the success of HLB's takeover of EON, Primus charged in a statement.

At the same time that Goldman was advising EON on the merger, though, the New York investment bank was also the key advisor to 1MDB, the government investment fund established and chaired by Najib.

Goldman used its role advising EON to "secretly curry favour with the Prime Minister by using the (EON) board's confidential information" to help Hong Leong's bid for EON, it said.

Goldman allegedly convinced EON's board that Hong Leong's bid was fair, "even though Goldman Sachs knew that the bid in fact was well below the fair intrinsic value of the company."

Primus, which held 20 per cent of EON at the time, asked a New York court to award it US$510 million for fraud and breach of fiduciary duty by Goldman Sachs.

That includes US$170 million for what Primus said Goldman's alleged misconduct cost it in the deal, and another US$340 million in punitive damages.

The lawsuit came after a move by US authorities to seize US$1 billion in properties bought with money allegedly siphoned off from 1MDB, which placed a spotlight on Goldman Sachs' role in the burgeoning scandal.

With Leissner its main contact with the Malaysian authorities, Goldman had raised billions of dollars for 1MDB.

One month after he left Goldman, in March, Leissner was subpoenaed by the US Justice Department in its investigation into the scandal.

Goldman said it would fight the lawsuit, noting that Primus had lost a 2011 legal challenge to the merger in Malaysian courts.

"This plaintiff previously lost its challenge in the Malaysian courts seeking to stop a transaction involving a Malaysian company, which was then approved by shareholders. We will vigorously contest this misguided additional lawsuit in New York court," it said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Hasan Arifin was the “kingpin” behind the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) cover up, the DAP said.

DAP MP Tony Pua called for Hasan to step down as PAC chairman immediately as he had “lost the confidence of Malaysians”.

“Hasan Arifin does not deserve to be PAC chairman. He helped cover up the entire scam when he denied that Jho Low owned Good Star Ltd.

“Najib (Razak) could not be investigated because Hasan had covered up the entire scam,” Pua said at a press conference at the DAP headquarters here today.

In May, Hasan denied that Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho was the owner of Good Star Limited.

The Wall Street Journal previously revealed a confidential letter from Bank Negara to Hasan naming Low, or Jho Low, as the beneficial owner of Good Star Limited.

“This is because Bank Negara had said the information provided was (for) intelligence (purposes). PAC is not an investigative body and the information it received has to be authentic and true.

“As the information received by the PAC is classified as intelligence, PAC is unable to incorporate the information provided as it would be in conflict with its duties and responsibilities and raise prejudices against various parties,” Hasan said at the time.

Yesterday, US Attorney-General Loretta Lynch told a press conference that 1MDB officials treated the state investment fund like “a personal bank account” and “stole billions of dollars from the people of Malaysia”.

The DoJ alleged offences were committed over a four-year period and involved multiple individuals, including Malaysian officials and their associates, who conspired to fraudulently divert billions of dollars from 1MDB.

In its documents, the DoJ had named Jho Low as the owner of Good Star Ltd, through which, the Department alleged, USD1 billion was fraudulently diverted from 1MDB.

“Between 2009 and 2011, under the pretense of investing in a joint venture between 1MDB and PetroSaudi International, a private Saudi oil extraction company, officials of 1MDB and others arranged for the fraudulent transfer of more than USD1 billion from 1MDB to a Swiss bank account held in the name of Good Star Limited,” the lawsuit read.

“Immediate action must be taken against all parties that were involved in the misappropriation,” Pua said.

It’s a disheartening, saddening and disappointing time for me to mark the papers for the final exams of my lower class FORM 4 students. A whole year’s effort, down the drain. I’d taught them again and again, how to simply copy points to get marks and ways to “cheat” the system in an effort to get at least a few marks for a test which is 11 years too advanced for their level. And yet, I still get papers like these.

At first, I felt angry and irritated that my students refused to even follow my simple instructions to copy this and that and use specific words which I guaranteed could get them 20+ (out of 155) marks in the exam. They didn’t need to understand what was before them, they just needed to COPY parts of the questions.

Then, I felt like an idiot, wasting my time marking papers that were impossible to do for my students. Students who barely have the English proficiency of a 4 year old, forced to do papers meant for 16 year olds. What a joke, our national education system is.

And then I remembered how RIDICULOUSLY STUPID this whole affair was: getting marks for the sake of IMPROVING GRADES, not learning. I remembered that when I was their age, I hated sejarah and moral so much and absolutely refused to study for those subjects and even follow the teachers’ tips to get “free marks”. I had given up even trying to do the tests. I had given up on those subjects.

And then I remembered where my students were coming from. Kampung school, kampung life, virtually NOBODY to practice English with, bad parents, bad teachers, bad school administration, bad childhood education, bad discipline, bad cultural and community influence, poor financial background, divorced parents, and the list goes on…. Being pushed through a system that forced them to do tests which were too hard for them, being scolded for being “stupid”, being labelled as “F”ailures every exam, sitting in examination halls and sleeping for 2 and a half hours because the words in front of them don’t make any sense…….. all for TEN years of schooling. They had given up on education.

And so they turn to other things to escape from their shitty reality: monkeying around in classes, ponteng class, ponteng school, smoking, wandering around aimlessly on their motorbikes without driving licenses, going on “convoys” with their “members”, doing menial low-paying jobs, and some of them – dropping out of school.

With all of this in mind, it seems like that it’s hard to blame them, but at the same time you can’t deny the fact that they are also responsible for the choices that they make. You can’t COMPLETELY exonerate a teenager who has robbed a store or killed someone. You can’t COMPLETELY free a child from blame when they have stolen something ESPECIALLY when they KNOW it’s wrong. They KNOW it’s wrong, they KNOW what’s good for them. Why can’t they choose to attend extra classes? Why can’t they do their homework even when it’s easy and doable? Why can’t they just BOTHER and TRY to read the notes that I laboriously typed out, photostatted AND TRANSLATED for them? Why can’t they stop being monkeys in class even when they know that what they are doing is wrong? Why do they make stupid annoying bird noises in the middle of a lesson? Why do they chat freely DURING EXAMS without giving a shit about others and the teacher in the class?

What’s the source of all this? How can we fix it? How can we raise the standard of education in Malaysia?

The answer is complex. It’s intricate. Every problem is connected to one another. All I know is that being silent and ignoring it is not going to solve it. Sooner or later, these students, those whom the country has failed to educate, will come back to get you, me, us. I GUARANTEE it. Be it in the form of desperate thieves and robbers, rempits, gangsters, unemployment, unemployable and incompetent workers, uneducated voters….

And these aren’t only a handful of the nation’s population. Almost FIFTEEN PERCENT, of the total students in Malaysia FAILED SPM in 2014 AND MIND YOU, that’s EVEN WITH THE PASSING MARK LOWERED to as low as TWENTY FIVE/FOUR for Sejarah and BM, the compulsory passing subjects. (Only SIX for English FYI).

And the number of failing students is only going to grow if we don’t do anything about it.
If you’ve made it this far and want to be part of the solution, then, good on you. Because there ARE ways we can work together to solve this problem but it’s going to take EFFORT and RESOURCES (meaning you can’t just sit on your ass and expect shit to happen) because as I’ve said, earlier, it’s a MASSIVE problem.

If you really want to help in any way possible, here are some suggestions:
1) DONATE in any way you can: money, time, resources, volunteer work, furniture, etc. There are many good sincere teachers out there who lack the resources to fund their community projects. The Lowyat.net forums are a pretty good place to look in, but I do not know anything regarding the reliability and trustworthiness of the people there. On the other hand, here is one website I trust which helps to connect willing donators to trustworthy teachers in need. 100% of the donations go towards the students or the projects. (https://www.100percentproject.org/). Bottom line is: JUST DONATE. Donate to whoever you can, with whatever you have, wherever you are.

2) BE MORE INVOLVED in education. Be more involved in POLICY MAKING. Voice out your opinion on what you think should be done in schools. Don’t just complain about what’s bad in our national education system. Take part in discussions and properly evaluate and analyse the pros and cons of each system/project. Give suggestions on how you think the system can be improved. Don’t just rant on Facebook. Write a formal letter to the authorities detailing your suggestions and criticisms. Take part in community projects. Spend your Saturdays giving free tuition or visiting a volunteer centre for underprivileged children. In short, FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN HELP.

3) BEAT, PUNISH AND DISCIPLINE your own children. ALMOST EVERY teacher I’ve talked to in my school has said that many students nowadays do not respect their teachers as much as they used to in the past. Many students in my school are the products of FAILED PARENTING and I can clearly see which students have been PROPERLY DISCIPLINED and which have NOT. Punish mistakes and discipline your children. Teach them respect and teach them manners. Beating/punishing your children because you hate them is called abuse. Beating/punishing your children because you love them and don’t want them to repeat the same mistakes is called DISCIPLINE. kids nowadays very pandan, touch abit go hospital for treatment, tomorrow bring lawyer to skool liau

4) DEMAND TRANSPARENCY OF INFORMATION. Why are the number of SPM failures not published in the main media? Why are the passing marks for SPM not readily available to the public? What are the statistics of illiteracy in Malaysia? How are the marks calculated for SPM? How is an SPM paper actually like? Can we trust it to be of the SAME STANDARD as other top countries? minister: ranking is not important

5) DEMAND for a BETTER GOVERNMENT. A government that is serious about education, serious about teaching the future generation manners, knowledge and skills that will help them succeed in life and be useful and competent global citizens. A government that doesn’t say stupid shit like: “If you don’t like our country’s national education system, you can send your children overseas” (or something along those lines), while the ministers themselves send their children to international schools. A government that doesn’t try to cover up how bad the national education system is. A government that doesn’t force teachers to give marks to students even when they don’t deserve it, JUST TO PUSH THE AVERAGE MARKS UP. A government that doesn’t force stupid burdensome procedures upon its teachers. A government that doesn’t force teachers to blindly “MENURUT PERINTAH” without questioning orders. A government that gives teachers a voice and the opportunity to speak out against policies or projects that do more harm than good and do not benefit the students in their communities. A government that respects and celebrates teachers that have sacrificed much for their students. A government that LISTENS to the people of this country. KEK

But if the current government DOESN'T want to listen to the people, parents and teachers, and refuses to provide the best for the children of this country, then VOTE for one which does. KEK, it's not a question of if

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — The prime minister has no right to reject candidates for judicial office, retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram said today after Datuk Seri Najib Razak purportedly blocked Datuk Hishamudin Yunus’ promotion as Federal Court judge.

Sri Ram said under Section 27 of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) Act 2009, the PM’s only power is to call for two more names in addition to those submitted by the JAC.

“He also has power under Section 26(2) to call for further information on the proposed candidates, but he has no right to reject the candidates given,” Sri Ram told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

“The failure to appoint Justice Hishamudin to the Federal Court was a loss to that Court and most unfortunate. In other jurisdictions, judges are appointed and promoted according to their ability and not because they give judgments in favour of or against the executive.

“Justice Hishamudin was an independent and able judge and that is a very good reason to have promoted him to the Federal Court as early as possible,” added the former judge of the country’s apex court.

Hishamudin told local daily Sunday Star in an interview published yesterday that the JAC had recommended in 2013 his promotion to the Federal Court, but Najib had rejected the commission’s recommendation.

Among the landmark verdicts that Hishamudin delivered was a 2-1 majority Court of Appeal decision in 2011 declaring as unconstitutional Section 15 (5)(a) of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 that restricts students from expressing support of, or from opposing, any political party.

Another landmark decision he made was the transgender case, where the Court of Appeal declared last November as invalid and unconstitutional the Negri Sembilan state Shariah enactment that criminalises Muslim men for cross-dressing.

Retired Court of Appeal judge Datuk Mah Weng Kwai and former Malaysian Bar president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, however, differed from Sri Ram and said the prime minister has the final say in appointing judges, but called for the JAC to make the final decision in judicial appointments instead.

Ambiga said it was “totally unfair” that Hishamudin was not elevated to the country’s apex court as the retired Court of Appeal judge was “such a worthy” candidate, describing him as a judge who had upheld his oath of office and was true to the Federal Constitution.

“Most of all, he was fearless,” Ambiga told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

“Unfortunately, under our laws, the PM still has the final say despite the JAC. This was one of the issues the Bar was not happy with when the JAC was introduced as it allows the executive the final say. This compromises the separation of powers.

“So I personally do not think the PM should have the final say,” the former Malaysian Bar president added.

Retired Court of Appeal judge Mah said the selection of candidates for judicial office should be left to the JAC in order to preserve the separation of powers between the judiciary and the executive.

“Here, we have a group of people who are in the best position to know who is who, and go purely on merits and capability. So once they decide who they want to appoint, they should have the last say so they’re free from the executive,” Mah told Malay Mail Online.

The JAC, which was formed in 2009, recommends to the prime minister candidates for appointment as judges of the High Court, the Court of Appeal and Federal Court as well as judicial commissioners, including the appointments of the Chief Justice, the President of the Court of Appeal, and the Chief Judges of the two High Courts of Malaya and Sabah and Sarawak.

Judicial appointments were previously made by the Chief Justice, which Mah described as a very secretive and closed-door process that was improved subsequently with the establishment of the JAC.

The JAC, however, should ideally be “free of the executive” with the prime minister not having the final say in judicial appointments, said Mah.

The JAC in the UK selects candidates for judicial office and recommends them to the Lord Chancellor, Lord Chief Justice or the Senior President of Tribunals for appointment.
