Indonesia Denies "Joint" Pentagon Statement

No joint statement with US on China's South China Sea claims: Subianto

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has clarified that he has not issued any joint statement with the US Secretary of Defense regarding China's claims in the South China Sea.

"Yes, it is a statement, but there was no joint statement, nor was there a press conference," he said in Jakarta on Thursday.

He met with his US counterpart, Lloyd J. Austin III, last week during a working visit to the United States.

During the visit, Subianto witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Indonesian and US defense industries on the purchasing of F-15EX fighter jets and Sikorsky S-70M Black Hawk helicopters.

At the meeting, he and the US Defense Secretary discussed bilateral relations in the defense sector and sought to expand their coverage. They also discussed security issues in the region.

After the meeting, on August 24, 2023, the US Department of Defense issued a joint press statement stating that the two ministers shared the view that China's expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea are inconsistent with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Related news: Defense Minister lauds US for accepting Indonesian military cadets

According to the statement, Austin and Subianto also jointly condemned the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demanded its complete and unconditional withdrawal from Ukrainian territory.

No joint statement was issued following last week's meeting, Subianto reiterated.

"The important thing is, I can underline here that we (Indonesia) have very good relations with China. We build mutual respect and understanding. I conveyed that in the US. We are close friends with China, we respect America, and we seek friendship with Russia. Indonesia's position is clear that we are non-aligned. We befriend all countries," he said.

The minister then disclosed his plans to visit Moscow in Russia and Beijing in China this year.

"I will visit Moscow, I also have an invitation to visit Beijing in October. Insya Allah (God willing), I was invited. We want to befriend all countries. If possible, we can become a bridge for all," Subianto added.

BREAKING: Imdb shutdown message boards

IMDb Message Boards Announcement

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

OUG heist: RM1 million gone in four minutes

KUALA LUMPUR: A gang of robbers needed only four minutes to complete a RM1 million heist at a jewellery store at the OUG Plaza in Taman United, Jalan Klang Lama, this afternoon. Four robbers, one brandishing a gun, had barged into the jewellery store at 12.51pm. The jewellery store was located a mere 30 metres from the mall entrance. The shop’s security guard, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the robbers took mere minutes to collect their loot. “One of them held up a gun and warned us (him and the workers) not to interfere. In the meantime, his accomplices used hammers to smash the display cases and fill their bags with trays of jewellery. The guard said that despite having a gun, he was unable to do anything. Meanwhile, the cashier of a convenience shop located across the jewellers said she panicked upon seeing the robbers. “I ducked, as I feared for my own safety,” she said. Another eyewitness said he saw the robbers escape in a car, which was waiting by the mall entrance. Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Sharol Osman Mansor said the robbers fled with 21 trays of jewellery, valued at more than RM1 million. At press time, police had cordoned off the crime scene and were recording statements from the store’s workers. It is learnt that this is the second time the shop had been robbed in less than three years.

Read More : http://www.nst.com.my/news/2016/12/195747/...ne-four-minutes

mall staff nearly fell into faulty escalator

Two members of staff at the shopping mall in central China where a woman was killed on a faulty escalator also nearly fell through a gap into the moving stairway’s machinery minutes before she died.

Newly-released video footage shows the two young women checking the escalator at the mall in Jingzhou in Hubei province on Sunday.

They are shown reaching the top of the moving stairway, but are startled when a metal foot plate moves under their feet.

“There’s a problem here. Almost fell into it,” a shopping assistant was recording as saying as she pointed to the escalator’s metal floor plate.

Minutes later Xiang Liujuan, is seen using the escalator with her two-year-old son.

Two assistants are shown waiting at the top of the escalator and they gesture towards the faulty foot plate, but it collapses under the mother’s weight and she falls into the machinery.

An investigation into the accident has ruled that escalator’s manufacturer and the shopping mall where it operated were at fault.

Investigators said two floor plates at the top of the escalator were poorly designed, allowing them to work their way loose and to tilt easily.

They also found that the size of the plates did not match the original designs and were loosely fitted.

The manufacturer, the Suzhou Shenlong Elevator Company, was accused of lacking strict controls over the quality of its products and parts.

The report also ruled that the AZG Mall did not take proper emergency measures after its staff discovered that the escalator was faulty.

It was also criticised for failing to give its staff proper training on how to deal with accidents and emergencies on escalators and elevators.

The lack of training was shown by the assistants’ failure to turn off the escalator with the emergency button when the mother fell, investigators said.

The escalator had passed a safety check in March, according to Chen Guanxin, the head of the Jingzhou Work Safety Administration.

The manufacturer, founded in Suzhou in Jiangsu province, has sold escalators and elevators across China and to overseas markets including Russia, Malaysia and Australia, according to its website.

The Hubei Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision has called for all buildings in the province to stop operating escalators produced by the company and to carry out immediate safety checks, a statement posted on its website on Tuesday said.

The escalators would not go back into use until the investigation into the accident was complete and measures had been taken to rectify any problems, the statement added.

Xiang, 30, was shopping with her husband, Zhang Wei, and their son at the time of the accident.

“[My wife and son] were more than halfway up the escalator when [a shop assistant at the top of the escalator] said the escalator had problems, but it was too late,” Zhang was quoted as saying by state broadcaster CCTV. “As she finished the sentence, my wife fell into [the machinery]."

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles 2015

#10: A-Sha Veggie Noodle Tomato Noodle With Vine Ripened Tomato Sauce – Taiwan

This was a fairly recent review; I hadn’t expected Taiwan to be on the top ten list. But there’s no denying – this is absolutely marvelous stuff. The noodles have a great gauge – broad, flat and soft with a light chew. The great part is the tomato flavor – when I opened the sachet of sauce the whole room smelled like fresh tomatoes. Not only that, there’s more than enough sauce to flavor all of the noodles.

#9: Maruchan Gotsumori Sauce Yakisoba - Japan

Marchuan’s first time on the top ten instant noodles list. This big tray of yakisoba was a very nice surprise. First, there’s a lot of noodles here – easily enough for two. Second, the flavor has a little hint of spiciness. Thirdly, the cabbage hydrated very nicely with a tantalizing crunch. Finally, the inclusion of Kewpie mayonnaise sealed the deal for me.

#8: Mama Oriental Style Instant Noodles Green Curry Flavour Jumbo Pack - Thailand

The noodles are Mama’s great brown noodles – they don’t suck up too much broth and have a tension I really like. Not only that – there’s a decent amount of them! Then there’s the broth whose rich green curry flavor satisfies with excellent heat and flavor.

#7: MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle (New Improved Taste) – Malaysia

The noodles are great – gauge is just a little wider than standard. The broth is a work of art; the strength of sweet prawn flavor is balanced with a well-tempered amount of heat.
It’s thick and has a perfect oiliness to it. To top it off, the fried onions are the best I’ve encountered in the instant noodle world; they are of good size and plentiful.

#6: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa – Malaysia

With their special Mi Tarik technology that emulated traditional hand-pulled noodles, you get a great texture and chewiness as well as elasticity with this noodle. The broth however was what made this a favorite of mine – it has a comfort food feel to it that seems to come from a component that reminds me of strong cumin. Worthy of the name Gold Recipe.

#5: Prima Taste Singapore Curry La Mian – Singapore

For the third year in a row on the top ten instant noodles list, this amazing curry has made the top ten instant noodles list. This one has very thick chewy noodles – they take a little longer to cook but it’s worth the wait. The broth is truly luxuriant – with two large sachets of paste and coconut powder.

#4: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa - Malaysia

CarJEN’s first time on the top ten instant noodles list. This one was particularly interesting to me. First, the noodles are quite good – standard gauge with just a little extra backbone. The broth is superb – firstly, the coconut creamer gives a nice richness. Then, Nyonya Curry Paste adds a nice flavor – sweet and colorful. Then there’s the sambal dipping sauce – it had nice bits of shrimp as well as a spicy sweet and citrus taste that was amazing.

#3: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian - Singapore

Third time on the top ten instant noodles list. The noodles are thick and have a great chewiness to them – definitely on the premium end of the stick and very impressive. The broth is a deep and flavorful one, with a richness to it that’s really quite amazing. It’s thick from the coconut powder which gives it a sort of milkiness. The paste had all sorts of things going on – has a great homemade ‘stewed for hours’ kind of feel. It’s a little spicy and a little sweet and must be tried firsthand. Masterfully executed.

#2: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle (New Improved Taste) – Malaysia

These were number one on last years top ten instant noodles list. The noodles seem a little more elastic and fuller this time – just a little more. The chew and mouthfeel are excellent. The broth is just amazing stuff again – definitely very spicy and strong garlic going on. The broth is darker as well. A couple little changes but still just as wonderful as ever!

#1: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Noodle – Malaysia

The noodles are just as always – nice gauge that has a great chewiness and quantity – just right. The broth – wow. It definitely has that full on flavor I experienced in Langkawi. The broth is not only strong but it’s got a thickness to it, and has that kind of aroma and consistency of a broth that’s been stewing all day long. Strong spicy heat, lemongrass and shrimp notes play throughout as well as a nice bit of sweetness as well. This is spectacular.

http://www.theramenrater.com/2015/04/20/to...t-noodles-2015/

LEE KUAN YEW WASHES HIS OWN UNDERWEAR

At Oxley Road, we value the frugal life

I grew up in a middle-class family. Though they were well-off, my parents trained my brothers and me to be frugal from young.

We had to turn off water taps completely. If my parents found a dripping tap, we would get a ticking off. And when we left a room, we had to switch off lights and air-conditioners.

My father’s frugality extends beyond lights and air-conditioners. When he travelled abroad, he would wash his own underwear, or my mother did so when she was alive. He would complain that the cost of laundry at five-star hotels was so high he could buy new underwear for the price of the laundry service.

One day in 2003, the elastic band on my father’s old running shorts gave way. My mother had mended that pair of shorts many times before, so my father asked her to change the band.

But my mother had just had a stroke and her vision was impaired. So she told my father: “If you want me to prove my love for you, I will try.”

I quickly intervened to say: “My secretary’s mother can sew very well. I will ask her to do it.”

My parents and I prefer things we are used to. For instance, the house we have lived in all my life is more than 100 years old.

When we first employed a contractor-cum-housekeeper, Mr Teow Seong Hwa, more than 10 years ago, he asked me: “Your father has worked so hard for so many years. Why doesn’t he enjoy some luxuries?”

I explained we were perfectly comfortable with our old house and our old furniture. Luxury is not a priority.

Mr Teow has since become a family friend, so he now understands we are happy with our simple lifestyle.

For instance, my room has a window model air-conditioner. Most houses now have more sophisticated air-conditioning systems. So Mr Teow shopped for a window unit in Malaysia, so I would have a spare unit if my current one broke down.

All the bathrooms in our house have mosaic tiles. It is more practical than marble which can be slippery if wet. But it is now difficult to buy mosaic in Singapore. So again, Mr Teow bought mosaic tiles from Malaysia to keep in reserve in case some of our current tiles broke or were chipped.

I have three Casio watches, but use only one. Recently, when I woke up in the middle of the night and could not find the Casio I usually wore, I looked around for the other two. I found them in a drawer, together with two Tag Heuer watches that my brother Hsien Yang had given me recently, as well as a Seiko that my father had given me decades ago but which is still working fine.

My instinct had first led me to look frantically around for the original Casio. After 30 minutes, I knew that I was not going to find it that night. So I strapped on another of my Casios, comforting myself that I would not have got round to wearing my other watches if I had not misplaced my usual one.

I am frugal about my clothing too. I had only two batik wrap-around skirts that I bought in Indonesia more than 20 years ago. My girlfriends and my sister-in-law Ho Ching noticed that I wore the same two skirts almost all the time, and probably thought I looked scruffy. So they bought me more than 20 new skirts.

I have begun using three of the 20, and plan to wear them out before using the rest. And I have not discarded my two original wrap-arounds.

I have stuffed one into my backpack so I can whip it out as and when the occasion demands and I have to appear somewhat more respectable than in my usual shorts and T-shirt.

Frugality is a virtue that my parents inculcated in me. In addition to their influence, I try to lead a simple life partly because I have adopted some Buddhist practices and partly because I want to be able to live simply if for some reason I lose all that I have one day.

It is easy to become accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle. Some people believe that they will not miss their luxuries if for some reason they were to lose them, I think they are mistaken. I think they will miss them and be unable to reconcile themselves to a simpler lifestyle.

So I have trained myself to be satisfied with necessities and forgo luxuries.

Lee Wei Ling

- More at AllSingaporeStuff.com http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/l...s-own-underwear
FB: http://fb.com/allsgstuff
- See more at: http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/l...h.T9MBe4o8.dpuf

MALAYSIAN CHINESE ARE FOREVER INDEBTED TO LKY

As I was leaving the carpark at Bedok South Rd after my meal break, I happened to pick up a Malaysian to Golden Mile Complex. When he instructed that I should go via Bedok South Ave 1, ECP and exit Rochor to Golden Mile complex, I straightaway knew that he’s a Malaysian due to his peculiar Mandarin accent. Malaysian style of Mandarin is quite unique.

“You are going there to book your bus ticket? You going back to Malaysia?”

“That’s correct. How do you know?”

“Oh, I was merely guessing. Since you are a Malaysian and you are going to that place so I guess you might be going there to get your bus ticket. Usually, they go there to get their bus tickets cuz there are so many tour agencies there.”

The middle aged gentleman was looking forward to go back to his hometown. He didn’t go back during the CNY due to work commitments. He told me that he’s been working in Singapore for nearly 20 years and that he would go back once a year during the CNY but missed the last one. I just listened and I didn’t ask him what was his job nor did I ask him if he’s a PR or work permit holder.

Since the latest hot news in town is about our founding father’s health, we struck a conversation on that subject. For the past few weeks ever since Mr Lee is hospitalized, I’ve heard much from many passengers – locals and foreigners including tourists and expats working here talking about him. All of the comments are favorable. They all have nothing bad and everything good to say about Mr Lee. Let’s hear what this Malaysian had to say.

“Mr Lee is the greatest Chinese man ever lived. In my kampung, we all really admire him for his achievements. Not only he did lots of things for Singapore. We are also indebted to him and his generation of colleagues!”

I was quite surprised to hear from our Malaysian fren that he’s indebted to Mr Lee. I then asked him, “Why you said that you are indebted to him and his generation of colleagues?”

“Oh, not only am I indebted to him. But lots of Chinese in Malaysia also owe him a debt of gratitude! You see, due to your remarkable economic success, the Chinese in Malaysia are able to benefit and piggy back on that success. If you just look at the causeways in the morning – whether it’s Tuas or Woodlands checkpoints, you can see for yourself the tens of thousands riding their motorcycles across to work. Every year, your economy keeps growing at a fantastic rate, the number of jobs created for us Malaysians is huge. We are able to find employment in Singapore. What about those who live and work here like myself only going back once a year?”

I thought to myself what my Malaysian passenger just said is a fact. Everyday in the morning, there are tens of thousands crossing over to our country to work. And in the evening, it’s the reverse. For one thing I’m sure most of our bus drivers are Malaysians.

Our Malaysian fren further added, “Mr Lee managed to transform a tiny island into an economic power house giving us much opportunities to earn a living. Many of us able to bring food to our families, bought land, houses and enough savings for our retirement. Jobs are scarce back home and the pay is so low compared to Singapore. For that, we are forever grateful to Mr Lee.”

I feel that Mr Lee is the greatest Chinese man alive. He’s even greater than Mao or Chiang Ching-kuo etc. I say that cuz he could debate and counter the western press in English on their platform. He could rebut those western hypocrite human rights champions that your survival as a nation is none of their concern. In those days, basic needs such as security, food, water and jobs override all else. There are many countries in the region with lots of liberty but do they achieve the kind of success which he has brought to Singapore? The Malaysians and many others from afar are also beneficiaries of your success.”

“But there are lots of Singaporeans who don’t like him at all. They even hate him for being a dictator!”

“What a stupid statement! You have election every 5 years. If you all feel that he’s a dictator and corrupted, you could always vote them out. As simple as that. The fact that he’s in power for so long shows that a great majority still support him.”

“You see, even world leaders from America and China like to listen to his views on world events. I would say that he’s the modern re-incarnation of Zhuge Liang. link Such a great man only appears once in every 500 years. As such, he not only belongs to Singapore but to humanity. Many outside Singapore especially people like me and my family will miss him. There won’t be another equal to his greatness. He is Singapore’s mascot just like China had Mao, America had George Washington or Abraham Lincoln and UK had Churchill, Vietnam had Ho Chi Minh, Indonesia had Sukarno etc etc…”

“You seem quite knowledgeable. I’m impressed by your knowledge.”

“Yup. I may not speak English. I may be a blue collar worker. But I read much. I live under a different system. I can see the vast differences between us. Sadly, most of you just take for granted the many things which Mr Lee has fought hard. He has left his legacy for your children which we on the other side could only dream of.

My Malaysian passenger just like so many other foreign passengers I picked up over the last few days feel sad about Mr Lee’s imminent passing. A Titan with a powerful brilliant light that shines far and wide, as the name says it even though he’s encaged on a tiny piece of rock.

“生->老->病->死” is the cycle all of us will go through. But the difference lies in “死有輕如鴻毛，重如泰山!”

- More at AllSingaporeStuff.com http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/m...-his-colleagues
FB: http://fb.com/allsgstuff

Rajinikanth Mourns Death of Lee Kuan Yew

Superstar Rajinikanth has expressed grief at the death of Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father and former Prime Minister of Singapore, and took to Twitter to express his condolence.

"Indeed a dark day as a leader I admired has passed on. I feel your sorrow S'pore. A true loss of a path breaking politician. #RIPLeeKuanYew" he wrote.

This is not the first time he has spoken about Lee Kuan Yew. Earlier, there were instances of Rajini praising the late Singapore politician and remembering his inspirational work.

Lee Kuan Yew passed away on Monday, 23 March aged 91. He is remembered as an architect of Singapore where he transformed the tiny city into a global trade and financial powerhouse.

In other news, Rajinikanth relieved after settling the "Lingaa" issues of the distributors, who suffered huge losses. The superstar reportedly paid a lump sum amount to producer Rockline Venkatesh a few days ago and asked him to sort out all the differences.

Rajinikanth's next movie is not confirmed yet. There are a lot of reports, which claim that he would either team up with Shankar for "Enthiran 2" or AR Murugadoss for the movie produced by Aascar Ravichandran.

His last movie was "Lingaa" directed by KS Ravikumar. The mega-budget movie had Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. The entire theatrical rights of the film was acquired by Eros International, who sold the different rights to multiple parties.

The film was made on a budget of ₹120 crore. The distributors had acquired the rights by paying huge amounts, but the movie opened to mixed reviews causing losses to many distributors.
