PETALING JAYA: More minds, better solutions.

A three-pronged coaching team has been assembled to help former Asian champion Lee Zii Jia rediscover his best form ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3.

Zii Jia, who resumes training with the national squad at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today, will work closely with singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and men’s singles head coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock, with input from his personal coach Liew Daren.

Over the next five weeks, the coaches will first assess his physical condition before fine-tuning a training approach tailored to his needs.

“It is true he will join our training. We have some specific days where he will join our practice here in terms of match play.

“And I’m looking forward to welcoming him tomorrow (today) for match play and to be part of the training group for these weeks,” said Jonassen.

Zii Jia has endured a dip in form in recent months, possibly linked to injuries and a loss of confidence, but Jonassen is confident the world-class shuttler understands what is required to bounce back.

The programme, however, is not solely centred on Zii Jia, with emphasis also placed on maintaining balance within the squad as preparations for the Thomas Cup intensify.

“We’re communicating really well.

“For a player of his experience, he knows what he needs. Our role is to integrate that into the team environment so everyone benefits,” added Jonassen.

“We have many players that can help with the sparring here, so I think it’s a very positive working relationship and now we take it step by step.

“It starts tomorrow, we’ll learn from it and then make it better each time,” he added.

Earlier, another professional player, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, had already reported for training with the national squad last week.

Ayden, who attended the engagement on Saturday (March 28) with his younger sister, appeared relaxed and confident when speaking to the local media.

What really stole the spotlight, however, was the young boy already referring to Syed Saddiq as “daddy” even before the engagement.

“Daddy is very sporting. We swim and jog together. Congratulations to mummy and daddy,” he said before the engagement.

Ayden is Bella’s son from her previous marriage to Singaporean actor-singer Aliff Aziz.

The former couple tied the knot on Sept 9, 2016, before finalising their divorce on June 13, 2024. They also share a daughter, Ara Adreanna, six.

Hong Kong actor Yau Piu has died after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was 57.

The news was confirmed by his close friend Wong Man-biu, who revealed that Yau had sought medical attention on Feb 12 after feeling ill during a meeting with a client in his office.

The former TVB star, who was born in mainland China, was said to be semi-conscious by the time paramedics arrived.

He was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

The actor later slipped into a coma and passed away at around 10pm on Monday (Feb 23).

Yau, famous for his role in the 1992 drama The Greed Of Man, joined showbiz at the age of 15. He enrolled in TVB’s training programme in 1989.

Over the years, he became a familiar face on screen, often playing supporting roles as misfits or antagonists – a niche that earned him the moniker “TVB’s go-to baddie”, as per Dimsum Daily.

According to the news portal, Yau later ventured into business, founding an environmental engineering firm that specialises in formaldehyde removal and indoor anti-bacterial treatment services, as well as distributing hygiene-related products.

He's survived by a wife and a daughter.

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of an elderly man who was assaulted in a road rage incident in Cheras on Sunday is considering legal action against the assailant, whom they lamented was let off with a slap on the wrist.

The assailant, 52-year-old trader Saiful Adli Yusof, was fined RM5,500 after he pleaded guilty to assaulting and threatening to kill Liew Khoon Foo, 70, following a minor road accident.

Khoon Foo was kicked and slapped. He sustained a swollen eye and required six stitches to his tongue.

His daughter, Cindy, said the family was upset that Saiful was let off easily and that they were looking at legal help to take the case to the next level.

She said her father was still traumatised.

"He is conscious and stable, but the shock has affected him. His appetite is not as good as before."

Cindy said her father underwent a full examination at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where doctors found no internal injuries.

He was prescribed painkillers and had refused further treatment.

She said the family was deeply affected by the incident, particularly the decision by the magistrate's court to fine the accused instead of imposing a heavier punishment.

"I feel the sentence is too light. I don't want to see another motorist suffering the same fate. Even if my father was at fault in the accident, no one has the right to retaliate with violence.

"What if he had been beaten to death? Who would be responsible then?"

Cindy noted that no compensation for medical or related losses was ordered by the court.

She said the light punishment could send the wrong message to society.

"If the law is too lenient, people may think that as long as they have money, they can resort to violence and pay their way out of it.

"For wealthy individuals, they would just settle the fine and be on their way."

She called for stricter enforcement of the law to deter similar incidents, stressing that heavier penalties would serve as a deterrent.

The case attracted attention on social media after a video of the incident went viral, sparking debate over road rage, public safety and sentencing standards.

Several social activists also voiced their indignation over the sentence as it did not reflect the seriousness of the offence or serve as a sufficient deterrent.

Community Policing Malaysia chairman Kuan Chee Heng said the sentence was inadequate and risked sending the wrong message to the public.

"It is within the ambit of the law, but as a layman and an ordinary Malaysian, I do not think the punishment is adequate.

"We do not know all the factors considered by the court, but from the public's perspective, this should not be viewed as an isolated case. It is a matter of public concern."

National Road Safety Council chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye had also commented, saying he felt there was a lack of "social justice" in the case.

"While we must always respect the independence of the judiciary, we cannot ignore the growing sentiment that the punishment meted out in this instance does not commensurate with the gravity of the violence displayed," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 28): The long-delayed littoral combat ships (LCS) project has suffered another setback, with delivery of the first vessel pushed back to December 2026 from the previously targeted August 2026.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the delay was largely due to late deliveries of equipment from original equipment manufacturers, as well as the need for rework involving piping and cabling installations.

The first LCS vessel, dubbed Maharaja Lela, has achieved 82.9% actual progress compared with a planned 96.52% as at Dec 25, 2025, he said.

Overall construction progress for the five-vessel project has reached 75.75%, lagging behind the planned 81.57%.

Following the delay, the commissioning of the second vessel has been revised to August 2027. The commissioning timelines for subsequent vessels remain unchanged, with LCS 3 scheduled for December 2027, LCS 4 for August 2028 and LCS 5 for April 2029, Mohamed Khaled told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session on Wednesday.

Despite the delays, he said the first vessel has been successfully launched and is currently undergoing equipment installation and major system integration.

Sea trials at the shipyard level for LCS 1 began on Jan 20, 2026, with its first sea-going scheduled for Jan 28, 2026. The trials will test machinery systems, generators, air-conditioning and propulsion systems as part of initial seaworthiness assessments.

Full sea trials are expected to begin in early April 2026, he added.

Mohamed Khaled said the total contract value for the five-vessel LCS project stands at RM11.2 billion, with RM8.3 billion spent to date, representing about 74% of the total cost.

To ensure transparency and continuous oversight, he said the Defence Ministry has established several monitoring mechanisms, with regular participation from the Royal Malaysian Navy and contractor Lumut Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (Lunas), formerly known as Boustead Naval Shipyard.

Project monitoring meetings will now be held on a monthly basis, compared with at least twice a year previously, he said, adding that Lunas has committed to round-the-clock construction through a three-shift system to accelerate progress and meet delivery commitments.

The LCS project has been under scrutiny in recent years due to significant delays and cost overruns. Initially budgeted at RM6 billion, the project’s cost escalated to RM9.18 billion before eventually reaching RM11.22 billion. The first vessel was originally scheduled to be delivered seven years ago, in 2019.

The project's issues and the contractor's tight cashflow led the government to take the company over from Boustead group on Aug 18, 2023. Lunas is now a unit of Ocean Sunshine Bhd, a company owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated.

KUALA LUMPUR: Completing the long-delayed Maju Expressway extension (MEX II) could cost as much as RM449mil, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The estimate comes from the receivers and managers (R&M) appointed to oversee MEX II Sdn Bhd, the project concessionaire, in November 2024.

The company has been under receivership since May 2022 after defaulting on sukuk payments.

Alexander cited that the final cost could rise due to current price levels, repair works, and other expenses stemming from the extended project delay.

He was responding to Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin, who sought updates on the remaining construction costs, the expected completion timeline, and potential toll rates.

"The R&M team is preparing a comprehensive proposal covering cash flow projections, financing costs, traffic impact analysis, concession period, and toll structures to ensure the project remains financially viable," Alexander said in the written reply on Wednesday (Dec 3).

At present, both the completion date and toll rates for MEX II have yet to be finalised.

The extension, planned as a 16.8km three-lane dual carriageway, will link the MEX Putrajaya Interchange to the KLIA highway.

A number of high-profile websites, including X and ChatGPT, went down for many on Tuesday, due to problems affecting major internet infrastructure firm, Cloudflare.

Thousands of users began reporting issues with the sites, as well as other services, to outage monitoring site Downdetector shortly after 11:30 GMT.

Cloudflare said the "significant outage" occurred after a configuration file designed to handle threat traffic did not work as intended and "triggered a crash" in its software handling traffic for its wider services.

"We apologise to our customers and the Internet in general for letting you down today," it said in a statement.

"Given the importance of Cloudflare's services, any outage is unacceptable," the company added.

It said while the issue had been resolved, some services might still encounter errors as they came back online.

A wide range of apps and websites were impacted by the outage.

Users reported encountering delays or technical issues when trying to access services such as Grindr, Zoom and Canva.

Meanwhile social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was displaying a message on its homepage for some users which said there was a problem with its internal server due to an "error" originating with Cloudflare.

ChatGPT's site was also displaying an error message telling some users: "please unblock challenges cloudflare.com to proceed."
