Modem software go crazy after Sp2 patch

I have recently upgraded the Windows XP operating system to Service Pack 2 and the current Version is 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600. However, since performing this upgrade I can no longer get any Modem sounds or SL Lights (in the notification area) from the Internal Modem. The model is an Aztech CNR2800 V.90 Modem. I have found an error message in the Event Viewer System that states "The SmartLinkService service has reported an invalid current state 0". The Event ID is 7016. The next message is "The SmartLinkService service entered the stopped state". Event ID 7036. The service is slserv.exe. Can you provide some advice has to how I can re-activate Modem sounds and lights?
