Marketing case study

Mak_ko — Fri, 18 Feb 2011 01:26:06 +0800

So, I was given an assignment, something like a case study, regarding the struggle of american automobile industry, especially the detroit big three, to compete with the japanese carmakers such as toyota about 5/6/7 years ago. I learnt that, if I'm not mistaken, the american companies started to take the approach of the japanese carmakers such as reducing development time and costs by reusing platforms and such, hoping to turn around their fortune and dominance especially in the US. Now I'm not sure whether if they succeed, but from a few articles/journals I've read I've understand they did not make significant improvements to counter the japanese carmakers. So I was asked, if the detroit companies successfully implement their new operating strategies, will it give them a competitive advantage in the marketplace?

I'm not sure how should I answer this question, since I'm not familiar with the automobile market. Any help from anyone knowledgeable in this field is appreciated
