Oh, the humble watchphone... we've seen a few iterations, but very few that we'd wear for anything but a laugh. The gang at eSales China are offering a slight twist on the typical fare by throwing in dual SIM cards behind the 1.3-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, 2 mp camera, microSD card, and GSM850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 support. By now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in direct sunlight. But Samsung's been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. Techblog took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It's clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That'll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can start meeting demand... regardless of what Stevie J has to say. Australia to pay Telstra A$11 billion

The Australian government just found the infrastructure for its A$43 billion national broadband project and eliminated its largest competitor in one fell swoop -- pending shareholder and regulator approval, Telstra will receive A$11 billion of that money in exchange for its entire landline network.

Telstra will decommission its monopoly of copper cables to make room for the government's fiber and migrate its customers to the resulting 100Mbps National Broadband Network (NBN) as those light-bearing threads roll out.

While Telstra might become a smaller player in the internet and cable business without a land network of its own, it may get even larger in the wireless space -- the company says it's received "written confirmation from the Prime Minister" that it can bid on a chunk of precious LTE spectrum should the deal go through. PHONE SPECS

Samsung announced another Corby member - i5500 Corby Smartphone. Despite its small size, this fella runs on Android v2.1 Eclair and sports almost every possible connectivity feature you can think of.
Samsung i5500 Corby Smartphone, also known as Galaxy 5, looks and feels much like the other Corbys around. Still it's the mightiest one among them, running a smart OS and powered by a fast processor.
The full specs sheet is quite impressive given the small size - 2.8-inch QVGA capacitive touchscreen, a 600MHz processor, accelerometer sensor, 2 megapixel snapper and 100 MB user storage expandable via microSD card slot. Connectivity department offers 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi with DLNA, GPS with A-GPS, Bluetooth, microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack.
Samsung i5500 runs on Android v2.1 Eclair, which is just great. Despite the ROM and RAM are still a mystery, we suppose both are at least 256MB each.
Finally, Samsung powered the Corby Smartphone with a 1200 mAh battery, which should give you lots of hours.
Samsung i5500 Corby Smartphone will be available within a week on 199 euro price. It's expected to hit Italy first via TIM and Wind.

Motorola unveiled today the MILESTONE XT720 - the QWERTY-less MILESTONE brother. It brings 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 720p video recording and Android 2.1 ticking inside.

The MILESTONE XT720 is the European sibling of the previously announced Korean XT720 MOTOROI.

Motorola MILESTONE XT720 packs a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with 480x854 pixel resolution and multi-touch support, 600Mhz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 256MB RAM, and 512MB ROM.

The connectivity is all-inclusive featuring 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS with digital compass, Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB. Stereo FM radio and microSD card slot are also on board.

The MILESTONE XT720 runs on Android OS v2.1 Eclair, but still there is no information on future upgrades.

Motorola MILESTONE XT720 will hit stores across Europe at the end of this month, but the pricing or US availability are not announced yet.

Rapist turns victims into sex slaves

KUALA LUMPUR: Six secondary school students became a taxi driver’s sex slaves for almost a year after he raped them, filmed the act and threatened to make the videos public if they told anyone about it.

The girls, aged between 15 and 17, were passengers the 54-year-old taxi driver took to his house instead of their destination and raped.

He would later call the girls whenever he wanted sexual favours and use the recording to threaten them.

Three students who were unable to bear the torment mustered enough courage to report the matter to the police.

Two victims who were from the same school in Pandan Indah, Ampang, lodged their reports on May 20 and the third victim reported on May 29.

Police are still looking for the other three victims.

The first victim, who revealed her ordeal to a close friend who had asked her why she took the same taxi every time, lodged the first report.

Police then staked out a taxi stand in Jalan Imbi for three days and nabbed the suspect at about 9.30pm on Monday. Based on the video recordings on the cabbie’s phone, police believe there were six victims in total.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Com Abdul Jalil Hassan said they believed there was an accomplice who made the recordings. He said the recordings showed the victims screaming, crying and pleading with the taxi driver to release them.

“The suspect’s mobile phone is the most vital piece of evidence,” he said, adding that the first incident took place last August.

He urged the other three victims to come forward to help in the investigation. ACP Abdul Jalil said the suspect would wait outside school compounds for students to get into his taxi. He would then pretend he had an emergency to attend to at home.

Once at his house in Taman Muda, Ampang, the man would force the victims into his house and rape them.The suspect, who has been a taxi driver for 17 years and has no previous criminal records, lived alone.

He has been remanded for seven days until Monday at the Ampang Jaya district police station. The taxi has also been taken to the station.

ARM, Samsung, IBM, Freescale, TI and more join to form Linaro, speed rollout of Linux-based devices

My, my -- what have we here? No, seriously, what is this hodgepodge of (rival) companies, and why have they suddenly decided to high five each other here at Computex? Frankly, we're still trying to piece it all together, but after sitting through a Linaro launch event in Taipei, we're beginning to get a better handle on the relationship that Samsung, ARM, IBM, Freescale, ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments and the Linux Foundation have just made official.

The outfits mentioned above are coming together to form the UK-based Linaro (a not-for-profit entity), which currently has 25 engineers but will see that figure shoot up to nearly a hundred around the world in the coming days. In short, the new firm -- which will have an annual budget in the "tens of millions of dollars" but below "$100 million" -- is seeking to "speed the rollout of Linux-based devices," with one of the key points being this:

Linaro will "provide a stable and optimized base for distributions and developers by creating new releases of optimized tools, kernel and middleware software validated for a wide range of SoCs, every six months."

Nokia C1 & C2

NOKIA C2

Affordable phones for developing countries have arrived to the Cseries. Two of the new offerings are dual-SIM solutions and the other two offer good connectivity and multimedia for a very limited price. Nokia also announced a bicycle charging solution for areas with limited access to electricity.
Lets start wit the Nokia C2 - before taxes and subsidies it will cost 45 euro (55 USD) .

The C2 is a dual-SIM phone and interestingly, the second SIM card is easily accessible and hot-swappable (a world's first). The phone supports the 900/1800 GSM bands.

The battery is estimated to last 16,5 days on standby and 4 hours of talk time.

The Nokia C2 also features VGA camera, GPRS Internet connectivity, Bluetooth and FM radio with broadcast recording. There's also a microSD card (up to 32GB, but those cost more than the phone itself), 3.5mm audio jack plus an MP3 player.

Nokia C1

This is where the new Nokia numbering scheme becomes a little confusing. The final two phones are the Nokia C1-01 (39 euro) and the C1-02 (35 euro) - both are somewhat similar, but not quite identical to the C1-00.

Additional accessories

By the year's end Nokia will also release the bicycle charging kit, which uses a dynamo to charge phones using the standard 2mm plug. It is targeted at areas with limited access to electricity, where bicycles are often the most popular mode of transportation.
