Canonical Retires Global CD Distributor Programme

Gerry Carr of Canonical has announced that ShipIt has been discontinued this 6th April and would be focusing on their CD distributor programme to LoCos instead.

It’s with some regret that we are announcing the end of the ShipIt Programme and the CD distributor programme. … Technology moves on and as we look at ways to spread Ubuntu further, a CD distribution programme, especially one of that size and delivered in that way, makes less sense. We have been slowly easing back the programme over the last two years to limit the number of CDs per person and the number of times a person could apply for a CD. But for Ubuntu 11.04 you will no longer be able to go to our website and apply for a free CD.

That’s not to say there won’t be CDs. We are going to make large numbers of CDs available to the Ubuntu Local Communities (LoCos) through a shipIt-lite program. We are asking the LoCos, who are much better placed than Canonical in many ways, to find creative ways to get CDs to those that need them. And of course, every single person reading this who has a CD is a potential distributor – it is after all free to copy, modify and redistribute. We will also continue to make the packs available through the store which are sold more or less at cost price (plus shipping).

So, I guess we're down to having only a downloadable media for 11.04. Too bad.

Parsix GNU/Linux 3.6r1

Alan Baghumian has announced the release of Parsix GNU/Linux 3.6r1, a new revision of the Debian-based distribution for the desktop:

"The first updated version of Parsix GNU/Linux 3.6 'Vinnie' is available for immediate download. This version merges all the published updates into the ISO images. Parsix now offers security updates. Vinnie ISO images are compiled using Squashfs 4.0 with LZMA compression and will fit on a blank DVD. We are back to using isolinux as CD/DVD boot loader, as GRUB 2 has issues such as booting from external USB devices. The updated Linux 2.6.32.26 kernel with improved configuration is patched using the latest TuxOnIce suspension and hibernation and Kon Kolivas's BFS patches. Improved live boot system loads the system faster and this version also ships our experimental USB installer that enables users to run Parsix from USB keys."

Openwall GNU/*/Linux 3.0 is a small security-enhanced Linux distribution for servers, appliances, and virtual appliances. Today's release of version 3.0 marks the 10-year anniversary of the project:

Ubuntu 11.04 'Natty Narwhal' Alpha 1 released

The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. The Natty Narwhal Alpha 1 Release of Ubuntu 11.04, is a developer snapshot to give you an early glance at the next version of Ubuntu.

Get Ubuntu 11.04
Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10
To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '11.04' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.
To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d; and follow the on-screen instructions. Note that the server upgrade is now more robust and will utilize GNU screen and automatically re-attach in case of e.g. dropped connection problems.
To upgrade from Xubuntu 10.10, follow the instructions above for Ubuntu 10.10.

Anyone has used it? I didn't try it nor wanted to. But they still did not change to Wayland in this release.

Debian 6.0 Squeeze to be released

At the time of the releases of Debian 4.0 Etch and 5.0 Lenny, however, it was not yet possible to ship Linux kernels stripped of all non-free firmware bits. We have nonetheless kept on working on splitting away non-free bits from the Linux kernel, thanks to the work of the Debian Kernel team and various Linux upstream developers. We are proud to announce that, to the best of our knowledge, all issues are solved and that we will be able to deliver a Linux kernel which is completely Free, according to the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), with Debian Squeeze. In accordance with the Debian Social Contract, we acknowledge that some users require the use of works that do not conform to the DFSG and that those works might include non-free firmware bits. For the time being, we have added to the non-free area of our archives alternative installation images and additional packages for Debian Squeeze, that include non-free firmware bits needed to enable specific pieces of hardware. They are not part of Debian, they should be looked for explicitly by interested users, and we cannot support them to the same extent of Free firmware as we do not have access to the corresponding source code. We encourage hardware manufacturers to release only DFSG-free firmware and we cannot accept other kind of firmware as part of Debian.

Pretty cool huh? I've played it and I must admit its awesome. Just one thing, a blackscreen bug, which will be fixed soon, as stated by Koei. My IGN is -Hzu-, ranked Guard(227 honors). Its not that laggy when playing with bots. If you fight with another players, its like fighting a Shinigami with Shunpou. Haha.
