Android phones are more likely to fail
ANDROID DEVICES MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP HARDWARE FAULTS THAN COMPETITOR SMARTPHONES SAYS WDS STUDY

POOLE, UK. 20th June 2011:A year-long study by WDS of more than 600,000 technical support calls has found that Android devices are more likely to develop a hardware fault than many of their smartphone competitors. 14% of all technical support calls for Android devices related to hardware faults in contrast to just 3.7% for RIM BlackBerry, 8% for iPhones (iOS) and 9% for Windows Phone 7 devices.

The greater propensity for hardware faults is, says WDS, a symptom of the platform’s fragmentation and adoption across a broad range of OEMs. Both Apple and RIM control their hardware ecosystems and Microsoft mandates minimum hardware specifications for Windows Phone 7 deployments. In contrast, Android is widely deployed by more than 35 OEMs globally under an open source license.

The study found that instances of hardware faults varied between OEM deployments, with some brands showing a propensity to display failures, others keypad/button failures and some battery issues. The findings, says WDS, highlight the need for mobile operators to choose carefully when ranging Android product and consider the Total Cost of Ownership, including support and potential reverse logistics costs, and not just the unit price of the device.
Unlike many technical support calls taken by mobile operators, such as network connectivity and service configuration, hardware failures cannot typically be resolved by Customer Service Representatives. Instead mobile operators, who have already faced increased customer care and subsidy costs as they look to meet consumer appetite for smartphone product, now face the additional cost of managing product returns and repairs.

“Mobile operators have to make some important decisions when selecting which smartphones to range on their networks,” adds Rich. “They must balance the need to introduce low-cost smartphone devices with the Total Cost of Ownership; how much it costs them to manage that device in their network for the duration of the subscription. A $100 smartphone might not look so attractive if it drives x3 more support traffic over its lifetime, has an above-average return rate or damages the customer experience in a way that increases the likelihood of the consumer churning.

“Lower cost Android product absolutely has a place in developing the wider smartphone market and ‘democratizing mobile data’. However you take it for granted that the great Android experience a consumer has on one device brand will be replicated on another, the ecosystem is just too fragmented. This means that operators must carefully balance their requirements and mitigate likely support requests through improved testing procedures, retail practices and self-care tools,” finishes Rich.

The study took place between June 2010-May 2011 and covered 600,000 technical support calls taken by WDS across Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia.

WDS provides managed services dedicated to optimizing the mobile customer experience. The company works with more than 100 of the industry’s best known brands, helping them to develop, launch and manage mobile products and services.
samsung in trouble again

Apple Files Patent Suit Against Samsung

Apple Inc. (AAPL) filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. in South Korea, escalating the legal dispute between the two companies regarding designs and technologies used in their best-selling mobile devices.
The maker of the iPhone filed a suit with the Seoul Central District Court on June 22, according to a case record on the court’s website, which doesn’t provide details of Apple’s claims. Online news provider MoneyToday reported that Apple is alleging that Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone copied the iPhone 3 design.
The dispute began in April when Cupertino, California-based Apple sued Samsung in the U.S., claiming the Galaxy products “slavishly” imitated the designs and technologies used for the iPad and iPhone. Samsung, which supplies memory chips for Apple, retaliated with lawsuits in Seoul, Tokyo, Mannheim, Germany and the U.S.
“We will continue to actively defend and protect our intellectual property,” Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung said in an e-mailed statement.
When contacted by Bloomberg News today, Steve Park, a Seoul-based spokesman for Apple, referred to the company’s earlier statements. The company said on April 18 that Samsung “blatantly” copied its technologies and designs.
Apple’s April 15 complaint claims Samsung is infringing seven patents related to the way Galaxy devices’ touch screens understand user gestures, including selecting, scrolling, pinching and zooming. Samsung is also copying three patents on the design, including the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad, according to Apple.

Bloomberg news
NEWS: Girl says she'll give up virginity for iPho

GUANGDONG -
Young adults in China are taking serious measures to buy expensive Apple products, according to reports.

Biznewschina reported that a female jiulinghou, referring to those born during the 90's, tweeted on Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter) that it is her "dream to own a iPhone4 but her father won't let her get one." She then decided to sleep with someone in exchange for the mobile device.

The Guangdong teen has posted a picture of herself along with other basic personal information saying she is willing to "sell" her virginity to anyone that buys her a iPhone 4."

Her post has received negative feedback, pointing out that a phone is not worth what she giving in exchange. Others think that someone is using her account and pulling a malicious prank on the girl.

Last April, a 17 year old boy from Anhui bought himself an iPad and cellphone by selling a kidney for 22,000 yuan (S$4,200).

Sociologists blame such events on the rising importance of materialism amongst the young generation and their belief that there are no limits to how they satisfy their desires.
Nokia E6-00

Are you looking at the Nokia E6?

The laser etched metal back plate seems to suggest that this is it, or at least, a very close to production unit. From the detailed pictures sourced from Engadget we have to say the fit and finish is as good as it’ll ever be.

The Nokia E6 looks like an update to Nokia’s E72 business centric phone. It comes with a dual LED flash 8MP camera rearward facing camera and a front camera of an unknown specification. The top part of the back plate looks like it could come off to become a stand or something but we’re just guessing here. Other than that little is known about this E6.

Android bug playing Russian Roulette with SMS

happy new year!

QUOTE

Android users are fuming over a bug in Google's mobile OS that causes SMS messages to be sent to contacts other than the one chosen, or even to an entirely random contact.

To make matters worse, a bug report on the Android developer's forum shows that Google has been aware of the bug - for some reason rated as medium priority - since late June last year. In their original issue posting, developer d...@rx7.co.nz gives a summary of the problem:

    Messaging.
    - Send SMS message to RecipientA.
    - Message appears to be successfully sent to RecipientA.
    - RecipientX receives message.
    - 'View Message Details' in RecipientA thread, shows 'To' field as being RecipientX's MSISDN (phone number).

The glitch appears to be impacting at least devices running Android 2.1 (Eclair) and 2.2 (Froyo), with some users claiming the bug still exists in the recently-released Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Model of phone does not appear to make a difference and there appears to be no reliable workaround at this point.

Where the SMS message ends up also appears to be a game of Russian Roulette, with some users reporting their texts ended up with a contact they had previously sent messages to, while others reported messages being sent to contacts they had never been in touch with before.

With the latest statistics from Google showing that some 83 per cent of Android devices are running either version 2.1 or 2.2, the bug could potentially be impacting the majority of Android users.

Furious developers have questioned why Google is seemingly ignoring such a critical flaw, with one accusing the company of forgetting that ''Android phones need to be phones''.

''That sounds unlikely right? I mean you pay upwards of $200 for a smart phone, and next to making phone calls, sending SMS text messages is probably the most used feature of the phone. But it’s true, and if you don’t believe me just type “android SMS wrong contact” into Google’s search engine and see how many hits you get. It’s astounding. It’s happening. And Google seems to be ignoring it altogether,'' authorwjf wrote on December 23.

The severity of the problem is leading some to abandon their Android phones completely until Google issues a fix.

''Text messages to my girlfriend getting sent to my mom is NOT cool. I'm now carrying my old iPhone 3G while the Captivate sits on my desk, SIM-less, collecting dust.
