SEREMBAN: All 14 Barisan Nasional assemblyman in Negri Sembilan have said they had unanimously lost confidence in Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

All 14 assemblyman are from Umno.

They also said that they were also withdrawing their support for the state government.

The assemblyman said this at a press conference at the Negri Sembilan Umno headquarters here on Monday (April 27).

Missing in Ampang found in Pedas

A woman who had been missing for 10 days was finally found when her body, found in a bag in an unoccupied house in Pedas, was believed to be hers.

The shocking news was revealed by Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad. The body is suspected to be related to a missing person case reported at Ampang Jaya Police Station, Selangor on December 15.

After the report was made, on December 18, the police at Pedas Police Station received a report and based on the information in the report, the police went to a house on Jalan Pedas–Linggi for further investigation.

"Acting on information, the police went to a house on Jalan Pedas-Linggi for further inspection and detected elements of criminal activity in the area behind the house," he told Sinar Harian.

BAT Malaysia revises cigarette prices

BRITISH American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd (BAT Malaysia) will raise the prices of its cigarette brands this Friday (Nov 21), following the excise duty increase announced under Budget 2026.

According to the group, the revised prices, approved by the Ministry of Health, will see Dunhill priced at RM18.20, Benson & Hedges at RM18.40, Peter Stuyvesant at RM16.70, KYO at RM14.00, Rothmans at RM12.90 and Luckies at RM12.40.

BAT Malaysia MD Nedal Salem said the government had taken a balanced approach in adjusting excise duties, noting that the last increase was introduced a decade ago.

“We believe that the government is taking a step in the right direction by announcing a moderate excise increase given that the last excise announcement was made 10 years ago amidst the current economic environment.”

However, he warned that sharp price hikes in the past had fuelled the growth of illicit tobacco.

“We note that significant increases in cigarette prices have historically contributed to the expansion of the tobacco black market, which currently accounts for 54% of total cigarette consumption in Malaysia. The illegal market poses a serious threat to public health objectives, safety and government revenue,” h said.

Salem also pointed to improvements in enforcement.

He said agencies had made “a tremendous job” in tackling the tobacco black market throughout 2025, citing the Prime Minister’s announcement that efforts had saved RM15.5 billion over the past two years.

He added that the RM700 million recently allocated to further strengthen enforcement “is highly encouraging and demonstrates the positive impact of their efforts”.

“We fully support the Government’s ongoing initiatives and enforcement actions to address this long-standing issue,” he said.

He also encouraged consumers to support legal products and assist enforcement agencies by reporting illicit cigarettes via the JomLapor website.

“We also encourage Malaysians to play their part by choosing legal products and report illegal cigarettes through the JomLapor website to help law enforcement agencies combat the tobacco black market,” he stated/

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court dismissed an appeal by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin to stay bankruptcy proceedings against them.

The bankruptcy proceedings were initiated by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) following Najib and Mohd Nazifuddin’s failure to settle tax arrears amounting to RM1.69bil and RM37.6mil respectively.

Judicial Commissioner Suhendran Sockanathan @ Saheran Abdullah made the dismissal after finding that there was no reason to grant a stay.

“I don’t see any other damages that would warrant a stay,” he said here yesterday.

In his dismissal, JC Suhendran said that the merits of a tax assessment were to be determined by the Special Commissioners of Income Tax (SCIT), and not the court of law.

“The court’s role is only to facilitate collection and recovery of tax. The formula of ‘pay now, dispute later’ is again to facilitate the collection of tax,” he added.

An appeal to the SCIT, the judge said, did not prevent the collection process as it is within the framework of the Income Tax Act.

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has failed in his initial objection to the Attorney General's appeal regarding a previous court decision allowing the former Prime Minister to initiate a judicial review and present new evidence regarding the Titah Addendum.

A panel of three Federal Court judges led by the Chief Justice of Malaya, Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, who sat with Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof and Datuk Hanipah Farikullah, unanimously rejected the objection after hearing the arguments of the parties involved.

In this regard, tomorrow, the same panel will hear the appeal of the Attorney General, Tan Sri Mohd. Dusuki Mokhtar.

On April 28, Mohd. Dusuki successfully obtained permission from the Federal Court to refer several questions, including whether there is any obligation under the law to compel any authority to confirm the existence and provide copies of documents to the applicant, especially the Attorney General who is only acting in his capacity.

In addition, the Attorney General requested the Federal Court to decide whether his party can present new evidence that will give legal effect to the Pardon Board's decision, which can be challenged directly or indirectly.

Last February, Mohd. Dusuki, through the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), filed a notice of motion seeking leave to appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision allowing Najib to commence a judicial review and introduce new evidence.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno views seriously the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah’s decree for police to take firm action against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for allegedly touching on the 3R issue (race, religion, royalty) while campaigning in the Nenggiri state by-election recently.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, however, said the party would leave it to the authorities to handle the issue.

"I’m sure with such a decree, the relevant authorities will also give serious consideration to appropriate action that needs to be taken," said Mohamed Khaled, who is also Defence Minister, after launching the "Fly the Jalur Gemilang" campaign in conjunction with the National Month celebration here on Monday (Aug 19).

In a statement earlier, Tengku Hassanal said he wanted police to take firm action against Muhyiddin for allegedly touching on the 3R issue while campaigning in the Nenggiri state by-election.

Tengku Hassanal also expressed his anger and disappointment with the action of the Perikatan Nasional chairman, who he said deliberately questioned the duties and role of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, when he was the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

COMMENT | The Pardons Board is paralysed with fear, hence their delay in making public the decision about convicted felon Najib Abdul Razak’s application for a royal pardon. If they thought that the delay would calm us down, they were mistaken.

Was the board stupid enough to grant Najib a full pardon? Did the Board members think that perhaps, we would have happily agreed to a reduced sentence for Najib, instead?

Any attempt to pardon Najib or commute his sentence is to show contempt for our Constitution and disrespect for the justice system and the rule of law. It is like slapping the community in the face.

The board cannot take us for fools. Najib is no ordinary convict but a megalomaniac who brought a nation to its knees with the help of his trusted aide, who remains at large.

IPOH: Three traffic policemen have been arrested in connection to a viral video posted online by a British couple alleging that a policeman had asked for RM100 bribe to settle a summons issued for speeding.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the three, aged between 37 and 42, from the state Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department were arrested to assist in the investigations.

All three of them have been remanded for three days beginning Tuesday (Jan 30) under Section 384 of the Penal Code.

“Investigations are also being carried out under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1988,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 30).

Comm Mohd Yusri said the investigation papers have been taken over by Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) and would be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once the investigations are completed.

“Besides that, internal investigations by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) will also be carried out.

The British couple famous on social media for their globe-trotting adventures in a campervan had posted a video online.

In the recent videos during their trip to Malaysia, Chris and Marianne Fisher filmed a traffic policeman who had allegedly offered to settle a traffic ticket that he had just issued.

In the video, the traffic policeman claimed the Fishers had driven over the 60kph speed limit and told them they had two options: either pay RM300 to settle the summons at a police station or pay RM100 on the spot.

In the video that was posted on Jan 28, a traffic policeman stopped the couple for allegedly speeding downhill along Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands in their campervan named “Trudy”.

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Daim Zainuddin’s lawyer has clarified that only two lawyers in his legal team are no longer representing the former finance minister.

Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, who is one of Daim’s legal counsels, said that news reports that Daim had discharged his legal team are inaccurate.

“Only (Datuk) Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and Alex Tan no longer represent him.

“Senior counsel M. Puravalen continues to represent Tun Daim and his wife Toh Puan Na’imah Khalid,” said Rajesh in a statement on Friday (Jan 26).

A news portal reported that Daim Zainuddin and Naimah had discharged the team of lawyers assembled to defend them in an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into their financial affairs and the ensuing prosecution.

The portal quoted sources that the legal team’s retainer was terminated on Wednesday due to a difference of opinion in the conduct of the couple’s cases.

According to the source, the team was assembled a month ago.

On Tuesday (Jan 23), Naimah claimed trial in the sessions court on a charge of failing to comply with a MACC notice requiring the declaration of assets.

She is accused of failing to declare her ownership of companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, as well as two vehicles.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki was reported to have said that Daim was expected to be charged next week.

IPOH: Police have arrested a man, believed to be involved in the arson attack at Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham's house in Ayer Tawar.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the man, in his 30s, was arrested in Shah Alam on Friday (Jan 12) at about 4am.

"We've also seized two mobile phones.

"The man has no past criminal record," he said in a statement.

A court order has been obtained to remand the man for five days until Jan 16 to facilitate investigation," he added.

On Wednesday (Jan 10) morning, three cars parked on the porch of Ngeh’s house were damaged when a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the house compound.

Comm Mohd Yusri said those with information of the incident are urges to come forward to help with the investigation under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

"Those with information can contact investigating officer Asst Supt Mohd Azalan Ab Karim at 019-392 7837.

"Those convicted can be jailed up to 14 years and fined," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has officially written to the Communications Ministry to take action against the airing of documentary "Man on the Run" on Netflix.

In a letter issued by Messrs Shafee and Co, Najib's defence team contended that the statements by several individuals in the documentary, including former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown, were in contempt of court as Najib's 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) corruption trial was still ongoing at the High Court.

The letter, dated Jan 11, was addressed to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and MCMC chief compliance officer Datuk Zulkairnain Mohd Yasin.

Najib's team included transcripts of the interviews in the documentary featuring Thomas, Rewcastle-Brown, former Damansara MP Tony Pua and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

It also included the transcript of interviewees; former US ambassador to Malaysia John R. Malott, former US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officers to Malaysia Charles O’Neal (Chuck) and David Smith.

Najib's lawyers claimed the statements were defamatory, a sub judice, prejudicial and biased and they were never proven in the court of law.

"We urged you to take down the documentary and restrain the platform from further airing the documentary," it said.

The letter was also forwarded to the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex deputy registrar, Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, and the prosecution at the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

On Monday (Jan 8), Najib's lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made his complaint about the documentary to High Court judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah during the 1MDB trial.

He told the court that they were seeking to remove the 98-minute show off the streaming platform for its "subjudicial and contemptuous" content.

The show, directed by Cassius Michael Kim, first aired in cinemas in Singapore and was released on Netflix on Jan 5.

PUTRAJAYA: The country’s two top revenue collectors made impressive collections last year, helping the government to strengthen its coffers, says the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, said that the Inland Revenue Board had recorded RM823bil in collection for 2022 while the Customs Department collected RM55bil.

“The Customs Department collection has surpassed its target, and we thank them for the hard work,” he said at the ministry’s first gathering for 2024 on Tuesday (Jan 9).

In 2022, the department collected 53.54bil for the country

The revenue board has also surpassed its collection target by RM7bil.

Earlier reports said that the revenue board’s tax collection target for last year was RM176bil.

Anwar also said he had given government-link companies and government-link investment companies to reduce their foreign investment portfolios.

“They should focus more on investing domestically.

“We will discuss again whether it should be 20% or 25% of their total investment portfolio,” he said.

MACC seizes Daim's Menara Ilham

PETALING JAYA: Menara Ilham, a 60-storey building owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, has been seized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The tower was the meeting point for the Council of Eminent Persons, set up by the Pakatan Harapan government of 2018.

Daim was the leader of the council, which also included former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and billionaire Robert Kuok, among others.

According to a notice by the MACC, the anti-graft agency seized the tower after it found an offence under the MACC Act 2009.

“Take notice that according to Section 38(5) of the MACC Act 2009, whereby anyone that goes against this notice or carry out any actions that is against this notice, has committed an offence that can be fined no more than twice the amount of the said value, or RM50,000, or whichever higher amount, and can be jailed for a period no longer than two years,” the notice read.

A staff member in Menara Ilham said that despite the MACC seizure notice, it was still “business as usual”.

“No comments. But it was business as usual,” the unnamed staff member said briefly.

A receptionist at Element Hotel, which operates out of the building, also said the hotel was operating as usual with rooms available.

Attempts to get Daim’s comments on the matter is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Singapore-based Channel News Asia (CNA) quoted financial executives close to Daim as saying that the seizure was effected yesterday after Daim’s refusal to submit to MACC’s petition to declare his and his family’s financial holdings.

CNA claimed that Daim told MACC officials that he had nothing to do with the Renong-UEM deal and in early December, the former finance minister was told by MACC that he would no longer receive any extension,

It was reported that Daim maintained that the deal which involved UEM acquiring a 33% interest in Renong was purely a corporate transaction between companies that were governed by their respective managements, board of directors and shareholders.

As at press time, The Star was trying to reach out to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Menara Ilham, built at an estimated cost of US$580mil (RM2.7bil) is located in the prime commercial and high-rise residential property area around the KLCC.

In May this year, MACC had said it was gathering information involving alleged misappropriation of RM2.3bil by a former minister and a businessman.

Sources said the probe was a continuation to the disclosure of confidential documents by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICJ), also known as the Pandora Papers, over transactions carried out at offshore financial centres.

The Pandora Papers refer to millions of leaked documents made public in 2021, which allegedly revealed offshore accounts of present and past leaders from around the world, including presidents, prime ministers, billionaires, and prominent business people.

Senior cop charged with murder

IPOH: A 44-year-old senior police officer, who allegedly crashed his car into a motorcycle, killing a Form Five student at Taman Jati, has been charged with murder.

Deputy Supt Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak was read the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Court judge S. Punitha.

Mohd Nazri entered the courtroom at 9am with a piece of cloth covering his head.

No plea was recorded.

According the charge sheet, the accused had allegedly committed the offence against Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, 17, between 12:05pm and 12.40pm at Jalan Taman Jati 1, near SMK Jati on Dec 15.

Deputy Public Prosecutor was led by Azlina Rasdi, Khairul Azreem Mamat, Wan Azimah Yaacob, Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, Saiful Akmal Mod Said, Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, Geetha AP Jora Singh and Low Qin Hui.

The accused was represented by Loi Yap Loong.

No bail was offered and Magistrate S Punitha fixed case mention on Feb 7, 2024.

DSP Mohd Nazri was arrested on Friday (Dec 15) and had been ordered to be remanded until Monday to facilitate investigations.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri had said that the suspect had tested negative for drugs.

According to the post-mortem report, Muhammad Zaharif died due to chest and abdominal injuries.

On Sunday, Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh said in a press statement that there was sufficient evidence to charge the police officer with murder.
