Thread Deleted : Reason

There is like, 8/10 'Why my thread is deleted' in /hd/ section, questions that can be easily answered via PM conversation.

Sometimes TS'es become unclear on why their thread is deleted.<s>While majority of troll know why their thread is deleted but still insist on knowing why they were deleted</s>.

I am wondering if it is possible to implement a feature where when a mod deletes a topic, a prompt will appear for the moderator to put a reason for deletion? Leaving it blank will automatically generate a 'No specific reason given' message. The option should also allow mod/staff to delete anonymously(by default), or allowing the notification to show the mod/staff name.

<s>Also add a extra note that they should PM a local moderator if he/she wants to dispute the deletion</s>

On the TS's site, it'll automatically generate a notification(via PM, or another new method), to inform the TS that his/her thread has been deleted under the reason given.

This clears up /hd/ from 'Where's my thread', and leave genuine forum related issues on the 1st page more often.

This feature can also be extended to include warn notification, suspension notification, thread moved, moderator action etc, like PM, there will be a 'X new moderator actions' at the top bar.

People walking into restaurant

I am sure you all have encountered these people before.

I am quite lucky that I haven't met one of these 'donation movement' for years, as I tend to eat and leave really fast, or simply just pack and eat elsewhere more peaceful, I never liked to crowd with people in coffee shop or restaurant.

So it happened I learn about another tactic of theirs the other day that I did not know of, in which a team of at least 2 people, one with guitar approach your table, and start singing in a extremely terrible way and poor guitar as well, they'll only leave once you put money into their donor book, something like 'Pay us to stop annoying your dinner'

The other case is related by my dad on the same night, where he was approached by a 'charity organization' endorsed by 'UNICEF'. After a lengthy explanation, the donation method given is by monthly donation through credit card, being cautious, my dad insisted that he wants to donate a lumpsum, which was rudely denied by one of the member(of 2 person), then my dad said he can donate under the contract for one month, but asked them to leave them contact/address/every possible detail so he can cancel it the next month their reply was 'We do not encourage you to cancel it'. So at the end nothing went through.

So far I see these 'charity organization' they :

- Usually operate in a team of 2.
- Heard of once, and never heard from it again.
- Always seems to have bigger welfare bodies like UNICEF, WWF to back them up.
- Does not have proper contact details.
- Does not have a solid base of operation eg. office.
- Claiming they're a small private charity that distribute the donation rather than collect directly.
- Have websites that doesn't work, or a front page that fortunecity html builder can put to shame.

As for me, I stopped entertaining these people, in fact I even gestured them to go away, The reason? The last time I donated to a organization for the visually impaired. The person who is 'visually impaired' reached out for the RM5 in my right hand instead of the RM1x2 on the left hand(I was sorting the money out that time). I rather give my money to my company's own charity foundation that is transparent in every single step.

Anyone watched VGA 2010? If not, awards list goes here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Video_G...rds#2010_Awards

Presenter cracking jokes that nobody laughed at, and the show feels more like a mini E3 when they announce new titles every 5 minutes or so. It's like :

- Presenter cracking cold jokes
- Awards
- Game preview premier
- Rinse and spin, repeat.

The award itself is a blasphemy, based on popularity(fanboyism) rather than critical points, nomination is made at random I believe as there are highly acclaimed elements weren't even nominated. or lost out to some other contending nominees that are plain ordinary.

What's your take?

Minister of F1 misinformation

http://forum.lowyat.net/user/hack3line

- This user has been posting a lot of junk information in LYN F1 thread(http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1632822/). Copy and pasting lengthy news and lots of picture/video in his post that disrupt any flow of discussion going on, his post are badly formatted as well.

- He is also mashing up information to make his own mis-information, distorting news to his own tune, he often copy paste news article and edit the article, which after following the attaching link to the original news, we find out that the quoted part in that forum thread has been edited by him. It is extremely annoying to do fact check to his very length disorganized post.

Example:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=38190750

QUOTE(hack3line @ Dec 1 2010, 02:43 PM)

latest..
latest Kimi Raikkonen will return to F1 next 2011 season!
http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=395616&FS=F1

Nothing in that article said Kimi will return to F1.

- When confronted by the fact he'll just act as if he don't know what those things he posted means and disappear for a while, only to reappear few days later with the same attic. If he doesn't understand the things he is copy pasting I think he should just stop copy and pasting them as if he understand a lot of it instead of going beyond his reach to even edit news and article to sing his tunes.
Example:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=38282942

QUOTE

my english MUET only got band 4 (10 marks more to band 5 damnnnnnnnnnnnnn).. i am very bad english speaker

what does it mean
"it's still premature too disclose the exact percentage but it has to be a position where we can control our brand" - PROTON

what does it mean SeaGates? since your english comprehension is better than me.

Take action please, users following that thread is getting sick and tired of filtering through his lengthy crap that hides misinformation and trusted 'rumors' inside.

Altered font size

My dad and I share PC, so a few hours ago he must have changed something on his user account, it altered the icon size, the fonts, and window bar on top.

I attached the image at below. Desktop reso is 1024x768.

So here's the non-default 'issues' I spotted.

- Icon are HUGE
- Icon name are similarly huge.
- Windows bar has different font. And the minimize/maximize/close button is not in default size/design.
- Default text(as see in names on task bar) has been changed.
- The paint drop down menus has a whitish discoloration.

I don't know what is changed, but I suspect a general font setting is the culprit. Anyone with the solution to revert everything back to it's unaltered state will be appreciated. I tried changing theme but it doesn't work.

Human Evolution

Living beings evolve to adapt, usually out of necessity.

eg. Predator developed stereoptic vision, while prey do not possess them, they have wider angle of view to ensure predators don't get an easy jump on them.

Human evolved through the ages as well, but now we seems to take the equation out through technology.

When we need to see better at night, we have IR lenses, when we need to communicate, we reach for our cellphone, when we need to go about places faster, instead of walking or running faster, we use vehicle to commute.

Has the human species reached the end of evolution, be it natural or hindered by technologies? or will humans evolves into other form? If you think we still have room for improvement, what do you think human will look like in the future?

Note : Biological evolution, meaning not involving technology.

Plane on conveyor belt

This is highly controversial debate that's still raging I think. And I've edited some details to make it clear of the scenario. It is reflected in bold text

The question is that can a plane take off on a conveyor belt moving at the same speed in opposite direction?

In simple form - Can a plane take off while being stationary? Having it's forward rolling momentum elliminated?

Both camp of yes and no are split quite evenly.

The 'Yes' camp argued that :

- Plane do not use wheels to fly, so it can lift off even if the ground is moving away at the opposite direction at the same speed.

The 'No' camp argued that :

- If the plane remained stationary, it wouldn't have forward momentum for air to slice through to the wing to generate lift, hence it won't have lift off.

Sure, Mythbuster tested the myth, but through proper observation you will notice that both model and full scale plane in the myth has some forward momentum.

In my opinion, not definite fact, there's flaws in this debate.

- Propeller propelled air into the wing, thus able to generate lift despite being stationary.
- If plane are able to lift up without moving, why does it still need a runway? VTOL would be laughing stock since it's an invention that fixes nothing!

So IMO, a plane on a conveyor belt wouldn't fly away. I am on the 'No' camp

Can't find video clip.

The advertisement is about a husband getting his wife in labor to the hospital, got stuck in traffic jam, running out of fuel, and had to be escorted by police officer to the hospital instead.

What LHDN want to show us is, the income tax we pay goes to public services like police officer, which helped the couple to safely reach the hospital.

In reality :

> The husband is at home(during rush hour period), meaning he's jobless, or retrenched.
> Traffic jam, public transport infrastructure failed so everybody had to drive, bad road system causing jam too.
> Running out of fuel, couldn't afford fuel perhaps.

All points to that, our income tax goes to other non-beneficial things other than economic development, public transport infrastructure, or to keep daily life necessity affordable, and it's no wonder there aren't enough law enforcer to catch rempit, they're all too busy escorting pregnant woman to hospital.

So guys, pay your tax, and live miserably in poverty

Human has diverse difference in culture. Even when online games are 'international', you can still tell apart who is from where. Here's a few example(Some are true, but others obviously made up to lengthen the list because I've never seen them in online games before)

Singaporean : I am going to hack my status to level 100, in order to get to level 100.
American : What the hell, how the *beep* that *beep* beats me? He must be a *beeping* Asian using cheat, ban them all! Block their IP! *beeping* hell.
Japanese : Oh, we're going to start an entire TV channel dedicated to the game, sorry though Gaijin, it's for Japan only.
North Korean : Our dear leader say online games are evil and that the money for internet infrastructure was shot into space for a better cause - to crush the Americans.
South Korean : What? No Zerg? f*** this shit.
Phillipines : I thought paying GM for unobtainable stats is pay to play feature. Never mind, I'll pay the GM tomorrow to un-ban my account.
Brazilian : Oh shoot, our game server closed. We shall move to another server and break every single rules there is, since the rules are only applied to people that can read English.
Russian : Huh? Online games? Bah nothing beats the Vodka!
Switzerland : Oh, you took my in game screen shot, that will be 5 Euro please.
Malaysian : Huh? Online games? Of course I play DoTA. I would feel so left out if I don't play the most popular MMORPG in the world.
Cars leaves factory at a price

I am not here to discuss about any car, but the automobile industry as a whole. And no government/import tax bashing please.

QUOTE

Motor Image has dropped the price of the Subaru Impreza WRX STi from the earlier RM289k price tag to a new price tag of RM251k. The price premium of upgrading from the 2.0 liter S-GT (priced at RM180k) to this 2.5 liter WRX STi model is now smaller than the previous gap of more than RM100k.

Further reading on Subaru Impreza

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Although a sedan is available even down south in Singapore, Malaysians get the hatchback version for both the S-GT and the WRX STi. The WRX STi is powered by a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder boxer engine producing 300 PS at 6,000rpm and 407Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. These power outputs however were tested on RON 100 fuel so expect the engine to detuned itself on the fly with our RON97 fuel.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi

No fancy twin clutch thingamajig here, there’s only a 6-speed manual to work with. Ratios are 3.636 for 1st, 2.235 for 2nd, 1.590 for 3rd, 1.137 for 4th, 0.891 for 5th and 0.707 for 6th, with a final drive of 3.900.

The car rides on inverted MacPherson struts at the front and a double wishbone suspension at the rear. Despite being a hatch and looking smaller, it’s actually quite a large car when you look at it up close, measuring at 4415mm versus 4204mm long versus the Golf GTI. It’s wheelbase clicks in at 2,625mm, not best in class for a C-segment sedan but right smack in the average department and 25mm longer than the Corolla Altis.

Subaru SI DriveSubaru’s SI-Drive system is a knob that allows you to switch between Intelligent, Sports or Sports# modes. They vary throttle response and various other vehicle dynamic settings. I’m not completely sure what but it’d better also control the steering assistance!

Right below that is a switch for the Multi-mode DCCD (Driver’s Control Centre Differential), which allows you to adjust the behaviour of the helically and electromagnetically controlled LSD. Basically there’s either a manual mode which lets you adjust how much locking force the LSD provides, or an automatic mode. More differential lock allows more traction on slippery roads, but this affects turning capability which may affect the car’s agility and responsiveness on winding roads.

Braking power looks good on paper thanks to 4-pot Brembo calipers at the front and 2-pot Brembo calipers at the rear, gripping ventilated discs on all four wheels. The wheels themselves are 17 inch alloys wrapped with 235/45R17 rubber.

There are a decent amount of creature comforts to prevent it from appearing like a cheap car with an inflated price due to its powerful engine. There’s automatic climate control, cruise control, bucket seats, HID headlamps, electrically controllable door mirrors, front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags, a 6-CD changer with steering mounted audio, hill-start assist, and vehicle dynamic control.

Source

A car price drop by RM30k or 10% in the case of Impreza WRX. this cut definitely did not come from import taxes, duties charged by government. It seems to indicate that cost of cars that rolls out of any factory is actually much lower than what we expects and that manufacturers are imposing huge profit margin on their cars.

With the bad economy outlook recently, competition between car makers may heat up as consumer are more more willing to part their money for value than for premium/brand. Have we been paying too much for a luxury turned necessity in urban living all these while? Will we see price adjusting to a more realistic number in the future?

When video game battlefield

Light humor, it's not meant to be funny, so don't 404 if you don't laugh to it.

What happens when video game battlefield collides with their real counterparts:

- Soldiers circle strafe to dodge bullet instead of taking cover.
- You can carry infinite number of guns in your backpack/pocket/gun holster.
- A platoon of counter terrorist wears different style uniform.
- Guns and side arms are fashion items that can have as much variety as team uniform, instead of a single standard issues.
- You have to buy your own weapons and ammo before deploying to mission.
- Your seems to have infinite number of spare magazines are always loaded full magically without the need to refill half spent magazine.
- Counter terrorist group can picks up terrorist's gun and keep them for next 'round(mission)' when the law is that they should not use these weapons and will instead be recovered later to be processed as evidence.
- Getting shot only slow you down(for a while) and lose you some 'hit point', when in reality you'll be incapacitated or bleed to death.
- Medikits can cure almost any wound with instant result.
- Eating food will heal your wounds
- Grenade use : Soldiers often pull the pin and putting the grenade away to use their guns without putting the pin back in. Only to have it magically placed back the next time he/she takes the grenade out again.
- Guns length never seems to restrict turning in tight corners like corridors.
- Primed 'Potato Masher' Model 24 grenade can be put away and thrown later.
- You pick up gun by walking over them.
- Guns stored on armory racks are always loaded, even during peacetime.
- Instead of putting down the arms in hand to pick up another, soldiers often 'throw' it on the ground. Risking accidental discharge or damaging the gun.
- You can still see your surrounding after you've been shot dead, only to slowly fade to black or remain on the ground.
- Picking up body armor will protect the head, picking up flak helmet will protect the body, and vice versa.
- Generally, bigger rounds means more damage, defying science of ballistics.
- Weapons never malfunction at random, unless they're 'feature' built into them(overheating for eg.)
- Soldiers will always give cheesy comments when they pick up a new weapon.
- Soldiers can still hold on to their gun despite being shot in the hand.
- Tanks/vehicles will always explode violently, killing the occupants when critically damaged or destroyed, tank crews do not make any effort to get out of destroyed tank.
- You can never 'fall down'. You will always land on your feet no matter how high you fell off from.
- Soldiers can hold huge weapon in their hands while climbing ladders.
- Soldiers' arms can be solid as concrete as their weapon never sway or bog in their hand while standing still, ironically cross hair do not sway unless in zoomed sniper mode or something.
- Soldiers need to jump onto higher elevation, instead of climbing from the side.
- Doors cannot be opened slowly, there's always a constant speed and sound when a door is opened. Often the alternative way are less desirable, noisier and faster.
- Villains will never notice anyone at their back through mirror reflection, shadow, etc.
