My 2nd Hand Car Hunting

My old trustee, a Nissan Cefiro A32 has been my loyal workhorse for me, for the passed 5 years now. It's with much heavy heart that I let go and upgrade to keep with times. I still remember the days spent going through Low Yat forum for information on maintanence of an A32, the countless research and studies about the car, specification, parts availability, dimension, fuel consumption, right down to the size of the tyre. Personally, i quite enjoy doing my homework on certain make and model - so that I am familiar with the car and also gather as much information, as handy as it could get so that my ownership is one of pleasant experience.

Typically, I'd like to know if the parts are easily available and how much does it cost, and this entails comparing with other makes. If i wanted to check on absorber, a simple check on Low yat and other related online platform, I can already conclude whether is it easily available and how much does it cost to change the suspension if it warrant so. Plus, a simple search on the internet, i can find all recommended specialist for Korean, Japanese or Continental car, its easy. Plus discussion in car clubs and forums, if you know how to look for it, can be highly informative. For me, the worst is not knowing what to do when situation arise.

I can say having studied about the Nissan Cefiro, I can conclude that parts are abundance, the cost of ownership is reasonable, parts are relatively cheap and most importantly, it's almost a bullet proof engine, while being a V6 is a bonus. I can honestly say that for a car that left the plant in 1999, purchased as used car in 2013 and after 5 years of ownership - its almost a trouble free car. Put aside horror stories that used cars are generally problematic, that 2nd hand car are mostly lemons and other make belief, I strongly belief that if you are interested in 2nd hand, the onus is on you to survey the market, check on the cars, compare the price, look at the conditions and have a feel of it. If you have a mechanic friend, do bring him along, if not bring a friend with semblance of interest in car for 2nd opinion. It the minmum 'due diligence' that you can take to minimize the risk.

Myself is not an expert, and i certainly is not a trained eye when I look at a car - but i try to work at it smart, as a general guide, I look at the car to get impression, whether the previous owner really take care of the car. Look for signs of rough usage, scan through the dashboard and instrument for scratches, look at the wheels - rims (for dent) and tyre for brand. I think most would agree, car enthusiast usually go for branded tyre and generally 2nd car dealer dont change the wheel due to hassle. Of course there are some who will change the wheels due to very bad condition when they take over the car, but usually if its original makers rim - it tends to come with the car. Look into the bonnet and engine bay for tell-tale signs of submarine cars - its not easy but look for it, its the least you can do.

When you survey the many car dealers in the Klang Valley, based on my observation, most prospective buyers usually 'admire' the car, they sit on the driver's seat, have a feel of the steering, take a casual look of the rear bonnet to inspect the size and maybe take a sneak peek of the engine bay, with the engine running of course. As i said, don't admire the car, rather observe it, scrutinized it, check for signs of wear, listen to the belt system whether is it whining or whirring. Check on cables and whether does it have voltage stabilizer (at least you know the previous owner care for the car voltage), its nothing really but as I said, every little details count, for my at least.

I may not be an expert but I strongly belief that being eagle eye helps during your car hunting, plus, always remember that for every car you find, there might be another which is in better condition, so dont rush it. My rule of thumb is - the price must be of market value, as i refused to pay overboard for a car that the dealer claim is Car King or Tip Top, or Like New Car - I dont buy into perfection, especially when its already a used car. Compile and compare the price in the marketplace and set yourself a budget range - 32K-35K, anything out of tangent - i usually forget it, no matter how tastefully done is the bodykit, or the rim just fit nicely into the arch. If you itch for a car change, do give yourself a 3-6 months hunting period, as I said, don't rush it. I don't know about you, but I try to compose myself when I plan for new car, and mind you, I have my share of cars throughout the years - Toyota, Honda, Ford, Kia, Proton and even an Alfa, its a long story. Knowing that I will be stuck with this car for a loan of say 4-5 years, I certainly won't be rush into committing unless i found one which is right in every sense. To be continued...

Buying Old- Merz 124/Camry 2.2/Cefiro-Dilemma

Hi LYN members,

Desperate need advise, I am planning to get an older car and narrowed down my options to 3

Merz - 124 - 230E, price range from 10k-15k
Toyota Camry- 2.2 gx - 99-00 - price around 20K and above
Cefiro- A32- 97-00 - price around 20K and above

By getting Merz 124 - i need to be burden by monthly instalment, as i can pay cash, but the main drawbacks is the the age of the car and possible maintanence. Also did research on parts and cost - it is not too expensive, but main issue is parts availability which is becoming lesser and lesser - especially recond or chop parts. I like the ability of 124 during outstation - steady but again, the main issue, is it worth it?? Friends advise dont take it, as 89 is wayyy too old, appreciate feedback from current user..thanks

Camry 2.2, not the bulky type - friends review is that the car is solid and superb- some driving it for almost 20 years and not much major issue...parts are available and not too expensive. Driving on hiway is steady as space ship (according to him anyway), suspension is damn good and air cond still freezes..only drawbacks is its still using timing belt and also the price is around 20K and above - I may need to go installment, if its still available for loan, with high interest..gulp....

Cefiro A32 - personal fav, merely looking at 2.0, as i m not drag addict, just cruising i assume is good enough...as i also own n16 1.6 before, torque-feel should be the same, so i heard. Reviews been great with steady cruise on hiway, not much problem with engine, but i really dont know - cos v6 engine- never use it bfore and heard many horror stories about v6 especially Perdana, any advise would be much appreciated. Anyway with the price around 20K - may need to take on instalment for this A32...and year - 97-2000, maybe problems start creeping in given its age??
