TLDR : 2 year old child went missing at around 3.30 pm yesterday afternoon while mother was wrapping food for customer at stall. Yesterday afternoon was heavy rain.

Suspected fell into drain. Found this morning at 9.20 am by Bomba. The child's body was found in big longkang 1.3 km from original scene

The child was found further up the big longkang at the Taman. Fencing only around the big longkang. The drains around Petronas & Hallmark were made deeper 2 to 3 years ago cos it often flooded when heavy rain

MELAKA: Five well-known hotels in the historic city of Melaka are expected to shut down for good in May.

These hotels, some of which stretch back to the 1970s and 80s, have been badly hit by the drop in occupancy rates and revenue since the start of the year, said Malaysian Association of Hotels' (MAH) Melaka chapter secretary Jason Bak.

Their situation worsened in recent weeks owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and the movement control order imposed to contain the outbreak, he explained.

"To date, we know there are five but there could be more hotels shutting down in the next few months," he said on Saturday (April 4).

Bak said MAH was trying hard to find a solution to save the hotels and jobs.

"Melaka hotels have come forward as one entity to look for alternatives to garner support from financial institutions and the government to provide micro-financing or help to restructure existing loans," he said.

MAH, along with Melaka Tourism Association (MTA), Malaysian Association of Tours and Travel Agents Melaka (MATTA), Malaysia Hotel Budget Association Melaka (MYBHA), are calling upon the government to consider their plights in the wake of gloomy businesses.

In a joint statement, the tourism and hospitality industry players said the government should consider waiving taxes.

The group suggested that Heritage and Tourism taxes imposed on tourism players and hoteliers be waived from April to December, along with quit rents and assessment rates for two years.

They said the government should render assistance in ensuring the tourism and hospitality industries continue to survive while providing steady employment to locals.

MAH has 75 hotels under its umbrella, MYBHA has 160 hotels, MTA represents 97 companies involved in tourism-related products and MATTA has 88 tour companies as members.

Separately, a senior executive of a hotel here said his management had asked employees to go on unpaid leave through WhatsApp messages and emails.

The executive, who requested anonymity, said 95 employees were given the notice during movement control order (MCO) period.

"There was no prior discussion by the top management to inform on the decision to ask the employees to go on unpaid leave," he said, adding that they had brought up the matter to the relevant authorities through email correspondence due to the MCO.

JOHOR BARU: An amicable ending is in sight for a two-year-old girl, who was initially reported to be missing but was allegedly “sold off” by her father.

A Singaporean couple, who has been looking after Angie Tiong (pic) in the past month, had indicated their willingness to bring her back to the relatives who had been caring for the child since she was five months old.

Johor Temple Foundation adviser Yap Yeen Min, who acted as a mediator between the couple and Angie’s relatives, said he would arrange for the two parties to meet up soon.

He said the couple understood the anxiety of the relatives and was thus agreeable to bringing her back although they had started working on the adoption process with the Singapore authorities.

Yap revealed that the 50-something couple – a senior executive officer and his homemaker wife – would also explain the whole matter to the police here once they come perhaps on Monday.

Since the couple took in Angie last month, Yap told Sin Chew Daily that “Angie has learned to brush her teeth and go to the toilet”.

Angie’s controversy began when her 33-year-old father lodged a police report on Dec 10, saying that his girl had been kidnapped by a friend.

However, the father who was allegedly a drug addict was later believed to have “sold” her to the Singaporean couple.

JOHOR BARU - The family of a Malaysian toddler, who is suspected to have been sold by her father, waited for her at a police station for hours on Thursday (Dec 31) but the reunion they hoped for never happened.

Two-year-old Angie Tiong was reportedly "adopted" by a childless couple from Singapore, Malaysian newspaper China Press wrote on Thursday.

Angie's aunt Tiong Mei Ling, 36, a hawker stall helper in Singapore, and uncle Luo Jie Cheng, 49, a furniture worker, said they will ask the Singaporean couple to return the girl.

The Star reported Ms Tiong as saying that her family will return money to the couple, as Angie's drug-addict father had allegedly "sold her off" for RM12,000 (S$3,957).

Believing that the couple from Singapore was taking Angie to the Johor Police Headquarters on Thursday, Ms Tiong and her husband rushed to the station to see the girl, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

They waited for five hours, but there was no sign of Angie or the couple.

Mr Luo said they probably backed out due to the media attention.

Instead, the couple had apparently appointed a lawyer to handle the case, Wanbao reported.

Johor police said that they have questioned the couple from Singapore and will release more details when the investigation is complete.

The police said Angie will be returned to Johor Baru, Wanbao said.

Citing a source, China Press reported that the adoption was done through a middleman who got a lawyer in Johor Baru to do the paperwork. It is believed that the couple has never seen Angie's biological father.

When the Johor lawyer saw the media reports about the missing girl, he contacted the source to explain that there has been a misunderstanding.

The source said the biological father signed documents agreeing to transfer custody of the toddler to the couple, but he is not sure if money was given to the father.

According to the girls' relatives, who had been taking care of her, Angie's father took her away from them on Nov 9, claiming that he was taking her out to play. Her mother, a Vietnamese national, returned to Vietnam when she was five months old.

When Angie's father did not return the girl, they filed a police report early this month, the Oriental Daily reported.

Angie's father,who has a long history of drug abuse, had a different story though. He had reportedly lodged a police report a month after his daughter went missing, claiming he only realised she had been kidnapped after she did not return from a walk she had taken with his friend.

In his report lodged on Dec 10, the man said a male friend had taken Angie for a walk from a budget hotel in Jalan Maju at Johor's Taman Pelangi on Nov 11. Before they left for the walk, he said the friend had given him a "few thousand ringgit".

Police have now arrested three suspects - a cook, a labourer and an unemployed man - all aged between 30 and 33 years, in their investigation into the "kidnapping" case and are on the lookout for more.

RM73mil CIQ complex illegally built on private land

AUDIT REPORT The RM73 million Malacca Customs and Immigration Quarantine Complex (CIQ) was illegally built on a private land, which eventually cost the Malacca government RM10.8 million, says the Auditor-General's Report 2012.

The report pointed out that the federal project, which included a jetty, was to be built by Pesona Metro Sdn Bhd on a plot of 1.78 acres at the mouth of the Malacca River.

Melaka River CruiseHowever the building required four acres of land. So, with the help of state authorities, the state government in October 2010 approved an additional 2.22 acres of adjacent land to make up the difference.

The said land was in fact owned by Pembinaan Kota Laksamana (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, which then issued a trespassing notice against the project contractor.

Despite the legal warning, the federal government instructed the contractor to continue with its works, resulting in the land owner filing a lawsuit against the contractor.

Following this, the federal government agreed to take responsibility on behalf of Pesona Metro Sdn Bhd if it faced any legal action from the land owner.

The tussle finally ended when the Malacca government agreed to compensate RM10.8 million to the land owner.

The project itself had been plagued with problems as it was supposed to be constructed in 2007, by Dinamik Maju Corporation Sdn Bhdat a cost of RM32.89 million.

However, the contract was terminated on mutual grounds on Sept 27, 2008, due to rising costs and a build time that was too long.

By the time the project was restarted, with a new contractor appointed on July 28, 2010, the cost had skyrocketed by over RM40 million to RM73 million.

Up to May 2012, a total of RM71.13 million had been spent on the project.

Detention without trial revived in PCA draft chang

A key proposal to the Prevention of Crime (Amendment and Extension) Bill (PCA) will enable the government to re-impose detention without trial for two years at a time, if passed by the Dewan Rakyat.

Among the proposals tabled this morning, the new Section 7B will establish a three-member Prevention of Crime Board headed by a judge from the High Court, Court of Appeal or Federal Court.

It will be empowered to detain individuals registered under the Act for a maximum of two years at a time.

The detention order can be renewed for a further period not exceeding two years at a time.

The new Section 15A proposes to bar judicial review of the board’s actions or decisions in exercising its discretionary power, except in procedural matters.
Detention without trial was a primary - and much criticised - feature of the Emergency Ordinance (EO) and Internal Security Act (ISA), both of which have been repealed.

The Home Ministry and the police have since claimed that this has led to the increase in violent and organised crime, as there are insufficient powers to hold suspects.

Pakatan Rakyat and civil society groups have maintained their strong opposition to detention without trial.

Save the 800 dogs & cats at Pak Mie Shelter,Kedah

Animal rights NGOs and concerned individuals are now worried that the dogs and cats in a shelter run by Muhammad Azmi Ismail in Kedah will be put to sleep by the Alor Setar City Council if Muhammad is evicted by Sept 19.

Several NGOs and 15 supporters of the shelter owner, who is widely known as Pak Mie, gathered in Alor Setar today to urge the city council to extend its eviction notice by several months to give Pak Mie time to relocate.

Malaysian Animal Welfare Society president Shenaaz Khan said the eviction notice was unreasonable as the council should consider the content of the premises before evicting Pak Mie and the animals he has been caring for.

"They must think of re-homing, relocating and transferring and not just disposing of or destroying the animals. We are dealing with lives here, not objects," Shenaaz told a press conference today.

"They may not have the capacity, nor the capability, to deal with the dogs for we do not think they have a pound. Destroying the animals is totally unacceptable," she added.
Accompanying her at the event were Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung, former state secretary Dzaher Ahmad, SPCA Kedah representative V Devi and SoS (Penang) spokesperson April Sham, as well as Pak Mie and his wife Intan.

Gooi said he would be meeting with the Alor Setar City Council tomorrow to negotiate a solution to the matter.

Facebook page petition started

"The council has a moral and social responsibility to see to the welfare of the animals as we are dealing with 800 lives here. They must deal with this issue in a humane way," he said.

Gooi has started a Facebook page petition to urge the council to extend the eviction notice to allow Pak Mie to find a suitable home for his animals.

April said Pak Mie and his wife Intan have contributed greatly to society by caring for the animals, which now number around 800 (700 dogs and 100 cats).

"None of us have done what they did. Can you even keep seven dogs in your home? Why can't we do something to support his work?" April asked.

When they evict Pak Mie and his animals, are they going to feed or kill the dogs and cats? If they kill them, they will be condemned by all of Malaysia," she said, emotionally.

"Do they want support or condemnation from the people? The choice is up to them," she added, while those present applauded her for saying this.

"Pak Mie is not asking to stay forever on the land, he is exploring his options and finding another area, so it is reasonable for the council to give an extension," she stressed.

Devi said Pak Mie, in running the shelter for about five years now, has been doing the work of the city council by keeping straydogs and cats off the streets.

"The relevant parties should help him. As NGOs, we can give him some advice but we cannot take the animals," Devi said when asked whether the NGOs could adopt the animals.

A dog lover from Sungai Petani, Arycia Ng, said she came to support Pak Mie as she herself owns a pet and understands the hardship he was going through.

"Dogs are like human beings, and are very loyal, Pak Mie has done a great job caring for his brood. If he can no longer care for his animals, can we find 800 households to adopt them?" Ng asked.

"The city council should have thought if all these matters before sending him the notice," she added, vowing to help Pak Mie with his problems.

Pak Mie said he would be considering land space in a Chinese or Siamese settlement instead of a Malay kampung as his work was not acceptable to his community.

He had acquired a two-hectare plot of land 3km from Kuala Nerang but had to stop renovating the place when he was issued a warning notice from the Padang Terap district office for wrongfully breeding animals in the area.

"I went to a Malay kampung because I am a Malay. I thought I can educate them about animals, about dogs, but I was wrong. Since they are complaints from my own community, I hope to find a place in a Chinese or Siamese village," he said.

Later, after the press conference, Pak Mie told Malaysiakini, "These days, I am going around Alor Setar to look for a suitable piece of land. I hope to find a plot soon."

Police have rearrested PKR vice-president Tian Chua, PAS member Tamrin Abdul Ghafar, the son of former deputy prime minister Abdul Ghafar Baba, and activist Haris Ibrahim, four days after they were released by the police.

"Yes it is confirmed, the police are at my Ampang house right now." said Tamrin when contacted. He added the police came at about 7.15pm.

"They have a warrant to arrest me on the same issue and are taking me to the Dang Wangi police headquarters."

NONEThe trio were initially arrested on May 23 for allegedly uttering seditious words but were released the next day as police failed to obtain a remand order.

Puchong MP and lawyer Gobind Deo Singh confirmed that Haris had also been re-arrested at around 7pm and was also being taken to Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

"We can confirm that they are both arrested again under the Sedition Act," he told Malaysiakini.

Chua tweeted at about 9.25pm that he too was detained.

Another student activist also detained

NONE Meanwhile, student activist Mohd Safwan Anang (right) was also arrested for sedition tonight, joining the ranks of fellow student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim who has already been charged under the Sedition Act 1948 on May 23.

When contacted, Mohd Safwan’s wife, Masturah Abu Bakar, told Malaysiakini that he was being brought to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

“The police did not tell us whether it is just to record a statement or for detention,” she said.

All those arrested, including Adam, were present at a forum at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly on May 13 which discussed the 1969 racial riots.

The second round of arrests comes despite urgings for the police to cease their crackdown.
