AppleCare Protection Plan - Changes to coverage

There's been some recent changes to the AppleCare Protection Plan.

So, what's new?

Packaging
A new, thinner box design with updated messaging and graphics now perfectly matches MobileMe

Displays
AppleCare Protection Plan now covers an Apple Display purchased with any Mac. This is new for MacBook Air, MacBook and iMac customers and a valuable existing feature for MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro users.

Mac OS X Server
AppleCare Protection Plan now offers GUI support for customers who purchase a Mac pre-configured with Mac OS X Server. An Amazing feature for small-business using Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server.

Time Capsule and AirPort
Your Apple wireless products are now covered by AppleCare Protection Plan whether purchased with, two years before or two years after a Mac

Mac mini + MacBook Air Superdrive
A SuperDrive purchased with Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server is now covered with AppleCare Protection Plan

The new version of the T&C can be viewed at http://images.apple.com/legal/applecare/do...lish_ZAv5.1.pdf

What's interesting is that Time Capsules/AirPorts/Superdrives are now covered up to 5 years! (Eg: purchase TC in 2007, buy a Mac with AppleCare in 2009, TC covered until 2012). GUI support for Mac Mini with OS X Server is also a great addition as I think there's gonna be lots of homes+small businesses that use these Minis, so the server admins won't have to worry much about troubleshooting via terminal anymore.

With this change in coverage I really don't think it's necessary to think twice about getting AppleCare for your Mac

*Since http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/877407/ is closed and other ACPP related threads don't seem relevant, I figured I'd start a new thread. Mods, I think it's appropriate to merge this thread with http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/877407/

Apple around the World: Market Presence Analysis.

I had a little bit of spare time on my hands, so I decided to analyze Apple's market presence around the globe.. Here's what I've managed to come up with:

For online stores, it can be observed that:
(1)Brazil, Poland, Russia & Malaysia are the few countries who have official Apple websites, but no online store. Links to resellers are given instead.
(2)China & India both have catalogue (view only stores). I suppose the large geographic size & remote rural areas of these countries cause logistic problems if purchases were allowed.
(3)South Africa has an authorized independently operated online store

For retail:
(1)Those that have/are confirmed to have retail already have Online & iTunes, except for China.
(2)Stores marked 'Confirmed' are not yet listed in apple.com/retail ; but have been identified as being under construction.

For iPhones:
(1)All countries that currently have iPhones also have the iTunes store, which is essential for activation..
(2)Canada, Italy & Japan have retail stores, but no iPhones. Canada possibly due to the iPhone name trademark dispute.

Where does Malaysia stand?
Just an official online presence.. Not linked from apple.com but linked from asia.apple.com , similar to Apple Poland which is only linked from Apple Europe.

How I think/hope these observations may change in the near future:
-Based on recent rumors & speculation circulating around the web, Italy & Australia may be receiving unlocked 3G iPhones. I'm sure these 2 countries are bound to receive the iPhone as it seems like Apple is confident in these markets, with 1 retail store in Italy and 3 soon to be opened stores in Australia. Both these countries already have iTunes too, allowing users to purchase from the iPhone AppStore. Unlocked or not, we'll have to wait to find out.

If Apple really releases an unlocked 3G iPhone, what about the rest of the world?
-IMO, Apple should stop all these exclusive-carrier cr*p and just sell the thing everywhere; just like the iPod Touch. Even if they jack up the price, people will still buy.
-Countries that have an iTunes Store have a higher probability of receiving the iPhone. Apple needs the AppStore revenue, if they're not revenue-sharing with the providers.
-Countries that have business listings & driving directions integrated with Google Maps have a higher probability of receiving the iPhone.

-----
Also posted at http://mymug.org/forum2/index.php?topic=52...g48488#msg48488

Users can also create their own Stacks for quick access to folders, documents or applications. Leopard's gorgeous new look extends to all applications, with every window on the desktop offering a consistent design theme and active windows outlined by deeper shadows that make them stand out.

The updated Finder includes Cover Flow(R) and a new sidebar with a dramatically simplified way to search for, browse and copy content from any PC or Mac on a local network. Content on any computer on a local network can now be searched using Spotlight(tm), browsed using Cover Flow or copied across the network with a simple drag and drop. .Mac members can use the new Back to My Mac feature to browse and access files on their remote Macs over the Internet.

Quick Look is the fastest and easiest way for users to look inside files without launching them or even having the application that created them. With Quick Look, users can instantly view full-screen, high-resolution files of virtually anything, even media files, from any view in the Finder.

Spaces gives users a powerful new way to organize their work by creating customized desktops which can contain only those applications or documents needed for each project, with the ability to quickly switch between Spaces with the mouse or keyboard.

Time Machine lets users easily back up all of the data on their Mac, find lost files and even restore all of the software on their Mac. With just a one-click setup, Time Machine automatically keeps an up-to-date copy of everything on the Mac.* In the event a file is lost, users can search back through time to find deleted files, applications, photos and other digital media and then instantly restore the file.
Connecting to two networks at once

Hello everyone! I need some help.... I'm just wondering whether it's possible to connect to two different networks at once using my MBP....

Let me try to explain my situation... I live in a huge student apartment block that has its own ethernet network... Residents can subscribe directly to the internet provided by the apartment management... Whenever residents wanna use the net, all we have to do is connect a lan cable on the wall and on our computers, load the web browser and a login page appears, where we key in the username & password of our internet account....The thing is, they charge really2 expensive... So what my unit-mates(just my apartment unit) and I have done is subscribe to a wireless internet service, similar to jaring wireless.. The wireless modem is connected to a wireless router, and we connect to the router wirelessly... So the networks available are as follows:

NETWORK A-apartment management ISP
MBP>[lan cable]>Apartment ethernet

NETWORK B-external ISP
MBP>[wireless connection]>Wireless router>[lan cable]>Wireless Modem

I wanna access the internet using Network B wirelessly, but I wanna remain connected to the apartment ethernet to access shared itunes libraries (i don't need to key in the username/password in the web browser to access itunes libraries on the network)..

My built in ethernet is connected to the apartment ethernet, and airport is connected to the wireless network...What's happening now is that everything wants to connect via the ethernet network... Is there any way to manage which applications connect to which network?? I want my web browsers, instant messengers, and anything else internet related to connect to Network B, but i want iTunes to connect to network A...

help appreciated!

EDIT!! : SOLUTION FOUND! I've been experimenting with the settings, and the solution was quite simple... Under Network Preferences>Network Port Configurations, i just dragged AirPort above Built-in Ethernet in the priority list. Both connections are active, but priority is now given to AirPort so all applications connect to the internet via AirPort... iTunes stills searches libraries on all active connections, so i can still manage to find the libraries of the other residents... woohoo!!! lovin it... i knew it could be done, just had to know how... with a mac, everything's possible!!

Even though there's not many responses, thanks to everyone who bothered to read... I'm closing this topic.

Worldwide notebook battery recalls!

Hello everyone... I'm sure you guys have come across news about notebook computers bursting into flames.. There's been cases reported all around the world, and a case even happened in Singapore. Not sure whether it's happened in Malaysia though. It's been discovered that the batteries in all of these cases are manufactured by Sony Corp, and the fire hazards are due to small particles causing the battery to short circuit.

Most of major notebook manufacturers are now recalling the batteries. Click on the links I've compiled below to check whether your notebook is affected with the sony manufacured battery recalls, and what to do if it is. Some manufacturers have also issued additional battery recalls but they're mostly because of battery performance problems, not battery safety problems, so i've not included them in the list. Be alert of any announcements from your notebook manufacturer, as some manufacturers who previously said they weren't affected are now recalling the batteries as well.

The battery recalls are causing a shortage in worldwide battery supplies, and new notebook prices are expected to rise!

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE BY SONY
Sony to Initiate Global Replacement Program for Notebook Computer Battery Packs

AFFECTED MANUFACTURERS
APPLE - Official announcement
DELL - Official announcement
FUJITSU - Official announcement
HITACHI - News article
LENOVO(IBM) - Official announcement
SHARP - News article
TOSHIBA - Official announcement

OTHER MANUFACTURERS
ACER - Recall being considered: News article
BENQ - Status unknown.
FTEC - Status unknown.
HP - Not affected at the moment: News article

Related Links
US Consumer Product Safety Commission
The Laptop Battery Recall Scorecard
The Wall Street Journal - Consumer Guide to Battery Recall

General Notebook usage tips
- If your laptop is affected, you can still use it.
