Rebuilding my current machine

Hi all,

With my 5700 XT on its last legs (random black screens and freezes) and the release of games like MH Wilds/FF7 Rebirth, I've been looking for a rebuild of my current machine (on my sig)
I'm looking to swap my CPU to a 5700X3D, and a GPU upgrade (w/PSU upgrade too, if I'm switching to a 5070Ti)

Currently surveying for a 9070XT/5070Ti, but still wonder how's the availability and pricing of these cards right now. The last time I surveyed them none of those cards are available individually so hopefully this time things change up a bit

Reasons to go for 5070Ti over the 9070XT:
- Better ray tracing performance
- Possibly better raster performance on Nvidia centric titles
- DLSS4/upscaling
- Possibly better multimonitor support (AMD's multimonitor support can be iffy at times)

Reasons to go for the 9070XT over the 5070Ti
- Possibly better pricing? (the price gap isn't too large, but significant enough for me to buy a new case/PSU)
- More SFF friendly, so no time-consuming rebuilds (the PowerColor Reaper is perfect for my case)
- No forced 12VHPWR (the amount of 12VHPWR fires isn't confidence-inspiring, and there are way too much conflicting reports on their reliability)
- Possibly more stable drivers (at the moment)

If I were to do a case swap, what case would you recommend? I don't have much space on my desk, so keep it around the size of my current case (210mm(W) x 374mm(H) x 385mm(D)

I prefer to buy from Penang stores if possible

Any advice would be highly appreciated

Singapore says hackers stole 1.5 million health

SINGAPORE: Hackers have stolen the health records of 1.5 million Singaporeans including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, authorities said Friday, with the leader specifically targeted in the city-state’s biggest ever data breach.

Singapore’s health and information ministries said a government database was broken into in a “deliberate, targeted and well-planned” strike, describing the attack as “unprecedented”.

“Attackers specifically and repeatedly targeted the personal particulars and outpatient information of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong,” health minister Gan Kim Yong told a press conference.

Forensic analysis by Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency “indicates this is a deliberate, targeted, and well-planned cyber-attack and not the work of casual hackers or criminal gangs,” he added.

Officials declined to comment on the identity of the hackers, citing “operational security”, but said the prime minister’s data has not shown up anywhere on the internet.

“I don’t know what the attackers were hoping to find. Perhaps they were hunting for some dark state secret, or at least something to embarrass me,” Lee wrote on Facebook.

“My medication data is not something I would ordinarily tell people about, but there is nothing alarming in it.”

Hackers used a computer infected with malware to gain access to the database between June 27 and July 4 before administrators spotted “unusual activity”, authorities said.

The compromised data includes personal information and medication dispensed to patients, but medical records and clinical notes have not been affected, the health and communications ministries said.

“Health records contain information that is valuable to governments,” said Eric Hoh, Asia-Pacific president of cyber-security firm FireEye.

“Nation-states increasingly collect intelligence through cyber-espionage operations which exploit the very technology we rely upon in our daily lives.”

Earlier this month, the US National Intelligence Director Dan Coats described Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as the “worst offenders” when it came to attacks on American “digital infrastructure”.

Some hackers have in the past offered stolen data and software for sale online.

Wealthy Singapore is hyper-connected and on a drive to digitise government records and essential services, including medical records which public hospitals and clinics can share via a centralised database.

But authorities have put the brakes on these plans while they investigate the cyber-attack. A former judge will head a committee looking into the incident.

While the city-state has some of the most advanced military weaponry in the region, the government says it fends off thousands of cyberattacks every day and has long warned of breaches by actors as varied as high-school students in their basements to nation-states.

In his Facebook post about the attack, Loong warned that “those trying to break into our data systems are extremely skilled and determined. They have huge resources, and never give up trying.”

In 2017, hackers broke into a defence ministry database, stealing the information of some 850 Singapore army conscripts and ministry staff. -AFP

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/regional/20...ve-cyberattack/

Why does my UPS says the input voltage is 250V

A little question with my UPS (APC BX700U-MS).

I recently installed this UPS with PowerChute software on it, and the notification says that my input voltage is around 250V and the UPS is operating at AVR trim mode (i.e. the AVR is regulating its voltage by reducing the input voltage).

Wasn't our power grid operates at 230V?

Hi, I haven't been posting here for quite a long time

Currently have a NAS with this:

Pentium G4560
8GB DDR4 2133
4x8TB Ironwolf
1x2TB WD Blue
Onboard GPU
2xSilverstone AP121 intake fan
2x Noctua S12A
1x Stock Silverstone fan
Silverstone KL04b case

I have this unit:
http://silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=362&area=en

It's the v2.0 revision (the black colored one)

Is it OK to run the server 24/7? Because the specifications said that the operating temperature is about 40C and I placed the server where there is no fan/air conditioning (about 30-34C ambient), although there is a big metal grille (the one fitted in homes that prevents burglary) near it. I was afraid that the PSU may take out my HDDs in the event of a failure (as it does not have any temperature protection).

Anyone can help me clarify on this since I have been away from hardware for quite some time

Need a case to support 8TB HDDs

Hi, I haven't posted here for some time

Recently I am building a NAS with a Cooler Master CMP250 case, and I decided to put a bunch of 8TB HDDs (Ironwolf 8TB) in it. What I didn't realize was the screw holes are different compared to regular HDDs:

My HDD has a screw layout similar to the top one (two screws). The problem is I can only screw one side, and that's not an option as the drive will wobble due to incomplete mounting. What cases support 8TB drive mounting holes? Preferably ATX/microATX case will do, and my budget is about RM350.

[@TristanX]

I haven't been working with programming/scripting for years and now I need to modify this code to display the file folder tree for a single folder, from this code:

CODE

/* Change the FOLDER NAME to generate tree for any specify folder */

function generateFolderTree() {

try {

// If you want a tree of any sub folder
//var parent = DriveApp.getFoldersByName("FOLDER_NAME").next();

// If you want to search from the top (root) folder
var parentFolder = DriveApp.getRootFolder();

getChildFolders(parentFolder);

} catch (e) {

Logger.log(e.toString());

}

}

function getChildFolders(parent) {

var childFolders = parent.getFolders();

while (childFolders.hasNext()) {

var childFolder = childFolders.next();

Logger.log("Folder Name: " + childFolder.getName());
Logger.log("Folder URL: " + childFolder.getUrl());

var files = childFolder.getFiles();

while (files.hasNext()) {

// Print list of files inside the folder
Logger.log(files.next().getName());

}

// Recursive call for any sub-folders
getChildFolders(childFolder);

}

}

This code was originally used to list the file folder tree of all folders, but when I modified the code into this:

CODE

/* Change the FOLDER NAME to generate tree for any specify folder */

function generateFolderTree() {

try {

// If you want a tree of any sub folder
var parent = DriveApp.getFoldersByName('TitaniumBackup').next();

// If you want to search from the top (root) folder
//var parentFolder = DriveApp.getRootFolder();

getChildFolders(parent);

} catch (e) {

Logger.log(e.toString());

}

}

function getChildFolders(parent) {

var childFolders = parent.getFolders();

while (childFolders.hasNext()) {

var childFolder = childFolders.next();

Logger.log("Folder Name: " + childFolder.getName());
Logger.log("Folder URL: " + childFolder.getUrl());

var files = childFolder.getFiles();

while (files.hasNext()) {

// Print list of files inside the folder
Logger.log(files.next().getName());

}

// Recursive call for any sub-folders
getChildFolders(childFolder);

}

}

I got the authorization from Google Drive, but I didn't see any html output in my Drive.
Expert: Someone must have defecated in hot springs

PETALING JAYA: The rotavirus outbreak linked to the Ulu Legong hot springs recreation centre in Baling could have been due to someone defecating in the springs.

Water quality and modelling specialist Dr Zaki Zainudin theorised that it was either that or a nearby sewage discharge.

“It maybe that there was faecal contamination because someone did something nasty there or there was a sewage overflow within the vicinity, or a nearby toilet. I am speculating but these are the potential possibilities,” said Dr Zaki.

“The virus is usually transmitted through an oral pathway. Open wounds can also facilitate infection,” he said.

Dr Zaki said bacteria and viruses do not survive long outside the body.

He added that however, there were studies that showed that certain strains of bacteria and viruses could persist in the environment and survived longer than usual outside the body.

“I can see why it can happen in an uncontrolled environment, a recreational area like the hot springs,” he added.

“But in a controlled environment like a swimming pool, where it is chlorinated, the chlorine essentially kills all the bacteria and viruses and it is very hard for something like this to happen.”

Dr Zaki said it was time to look into the Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations 2009 and to include and limit the level of bacteria and viruses in sewage discharge.

Regulations under the Second Schedule (Regulation 7) stated the acceptable conditions for sewage discharge for nitrates, phosphorus, oil, grease and others, but not for bacteria.

“Sewage treatment plants (STPs) have to treat sewage before discharging it but as the assumption is that bacteria and viruses die when they enter into the environment, hence it is not regulated. The implication of this is that some STPs may or may not disinfect the effluent prior to being discharged.”

For disinfection, Dr Zaki said there were several ways to do it but said that ultraviolet disinfection may be the most feasible as it minimises risk of residual chemicals from entering the environment.

“Chlorination could also be used, because after that the water must undergo dechlorination to prevent chlorine residuals from entering watercourses. Even so, chlorination may still incur undesirable disinfection by-products.”

Six people contracted “acute gastroenteritis” while 43 others showed symptoms of the infectious ailment after visiting the Ulu Legong centre recently.

Kedah health director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail said the six, aged from two to 11 years old, were from two families who visited the hot springs between 1am and 4am on Jan 30.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah urged those who bathed at the hot springs between Jan 25 and Feb 3, to seek medical advice.

Acute gastroenteritis is caused by rotavirus that infects the stomach and intestines. Children age five and below are particularly susceptible.

The symptoms are diarrhoea and serious vomiting that could lead to severe dehydration and death if victims do not seek immediate medical attention.

Read more at http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2017...hDxJktOkMW9f.99

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2017...in-hot-springs/

[@AmmoShaf]

Zimbabwe introduces 'bond notes' to ease

Zimbabwe launched a new currency on Monday, issuing $10 million of 'bond notes' that the authorities hope will ease a severe cash crunch but which critics fear will erase their savings less than a decade after a hyperinflationary economic meltdown.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) first announced the plan in May to address chronic cash shortages and supplement the dwindling U.S. dollars that have been in circulation for the past seven years.

However, the announcement triggered a run on the banks as Zimbabweans tried to empty their accounts of hard currency.

The notes have also fueled some of the largest protests in a decade against President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's leader since independence 36 years ago, and led to suggestions they could cause the 92-year-old's downfall.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-zimbabwe-...m_medium=Social

Sudden Death - 1998 Proton Putra WRC Prototype

In 1987 Group A had taken over as the World Rally Championship’s top category after the bonkers Group B had spiraled out of control. The cars were now much closer to a road going specification, and were subject to very strict homologation requirements. This for instance meant that any aerodynamic improvement seen on the rally version had to be fitted to the road legal vehicle as well. By 1997 most manufacturers had had enough of this expensive way of handling things, and the FIA switched over to the more liberal World Rally Car specification.

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/a748gr3/

[@Toyoi] [@sgshuhu] [@ruffstuff]

Fart blamed for fire during surgery

A patient’s fart during surgery apparently sparked a fire that caused serious burns to her body, a university hospital in Tokyo said.

The fire occurred at the Tokyo Medical University Hospital in Shinjuku Ward on April 15. The patient in her 30s was undergoing an operation that involved applying a laser to her cervix, the lower part of the uterus.

The laser is believed to have ignited the gas she passed. The blaze burned much of her body, including her waist and legs.

In a report released by the hospital on Oct. 28, a committee of outside experts who looked into the case said no flammable materials were in the operation room at the time of the surgery.

The equipment for the operation was also functioning normally, it said.

“When the patient’s intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire,” the report said.

http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201610300030.html
