Need Phone Suggestion For Parents Use

Hi guys, so my mum's Redmi 8 has been having cell signal issue since last year, and today it finally refused to work no matter what we tried. Since it's a hassle to back-up the data inside and recover it later, I decided it's time for a new phone.

Based on parents usage (WhatsApp, YouTube, facebook), what would you guys suggest?

Budget-wise I feel like 1k below is fine, as it needs 6-8GB ram to function normally in the next 3-5 years (hopefully)

Feedback on your automotive college

Just finished diploma in automotive engineering course at Riamtec, holidays now so nothing much to do (waiting for OJT next Jan), so I would like to share my experience studying this 2.5 yr course (2yr studies, 0.5 yr OJT) in Miri.

Some backstory:
I was googling for college to study automotive repair (wanted to become a car mechanic) so I was looking for colleges around sabah and sarawak (I'm from borneo). Dropped an enquiry on their webpage (http://www.riamtec.edu.my/) and their recruitment officer responded to me promptly. I Initially wanted to enroll in Diploma in Automotive Executive/Electrical (DAE) but the recruiter swayed me by elaborating the possible prospects of further studies, more career options and hence I end up in diploma course for Automotive Engineering (AE).

Just for some background, Riamtec (RIT) is initially establish by their chinese independent school (Riam Road SS) as a technical college and offer farm tractor repair courses in the 90s, now they have SKM courses for culinary, patisserie, automotive (most popular course here, literally overcrowded), HSE, hotel mgmt, A-level and some other accounting courses. Basicly a semi-established private college with affordable price to match their so-so infrastructure as it shares some of their facilities and space with the secondary school students.

Now back to the automotive courses, the AE course shares many fundamental courses with other disciplines of engineering (mechanical and electrical), and some other automotive courses. I chose this course out of interest (and also persuasion from sweet-talking recuriter). Initially thinking the DAE course was "inferior" as they did not attend engineering core subjects (maths, physics etc) I was pretty satisfied with myself.... for the first year.

Then some of my course mates changed to DAE because they did not pass their exams (AE is certified by MQA, hence the requirement of exams to calculate ur CGPA) and they did not want to repeat another semester. So they changed to DAE and from what I learned later, they have almost the same or even more automotive classes to attend, thereby equal exposure to automotive knowledge and more training to speak of (SKM level 4 for DAE, level 3 for AE due to MQA subject comittment.) Also time to study for job-relevant certificates such as City and Guilds. Suffice to say, me and my AE friends were not so happy at the end of our study.

For some comparison on the paths you can take to educate yourself to become a mechanic (AE or DAE)

Automotive Engineering (certified by Malaysian Qualification Association MQA)
-Most expensive course in the college (RM 30K)
-Study engineering subjects like maths, thermo, fluid mechanics, materials)
-Classes in the morning, SKM practical in the afternoon
-Study is divided into 7 semesters, 2 long and 1 short semester each yr for 2 yrs, last sem is OJT
-Need to keep CGPA to a 2.0 minimum, else you repeat the semester for the subjects failed (quite alot of people repeat their courses, some stretch the 2.5yr course to 4yrs and still haven't graduated)
-IF only fail one or two exam and semester gpa is ok (not all Cs) can retake the exam for a small fee of 300.
-Study MQA compulsory subjects (Moral studies, Malaysian studies, critical thinking)
-further study is more feasible (UK if u got $$ or west msia), or can opt to study in germany as the college have a dedicated german teacher which can teach u up to A2 level.

Diploma in Automotive Electrical (certified by Jabatan Perkembangan Kemahiran JPK)
-Most crowded course in college, can make many friends (lol)
-No studying of non-related subject needed (especially if you don't like memorizing non-automotive related things)
-minimal class hours, can do part-time at workshops if you really progressive
-same 2.5 yr studies to take 4 levels of skm certificate, and City and guild certificates if you studied for it, can attend if you don't have SPM (age is 16 and above)
-No CGPA to watch, just need to keep attendance at class up (pure automotive knowledge class)
-Low risk of failure (sickness/laziness or failure to show up at assessment day aside)
-No need study MQA compulsary subjects (MPW anyone?)

Some of the feedback about the college:

- Teaching staff is generally helpful, as long as you show up, they have no reason to reject you (unless u fck up real bad like cheating in exam or fail to meet basic requirement
- Quite a number of repeating students in MQA engineering courses (maximum allowance to repeat a semester is 3 times)
- Easy to find basic accomodation, hard to find good and affordable accomodation (large surrounding housing area).
- OK to Friendly locals (some Mirians are quite friendly IMHO, rest are ok)
- private college hence less emphasis on attire (ok to wear t-shirt/sandals, dye your hair, no need carry college ID)
- parking in college is a bitch, but its almost free (parking sticker costs RM2 for 2 yrs)
- semi-happening student council (not dormant, but not so happening either, operate more like small group of friends)
- Near to town, can go catch a movie or shopping by taking bus.
- Always get unwanted response from people when u say u study in miri (oh Curtin uni is it?)(what is riamtec, never heard of it) (oh my "insert relative here" studied car repair here)
- Not too hard to work part-time (night-time, discretion needed as u have morning classes)

Some tips for those choosing to do their mechanic education in Riamtec:

-don't be a sucker by buying the school-supplied tool box and safety boots. Always buy them from proper hardware store (eg Gremas in Miri) for better deals as the school only provide bare minimum at steep prices. U can always share with your friends for the first few weeks (if you need time to find transport). Just get the list of tools from the office. U can compare and find that they are way better than the school-supplied for the same or cheaper price when bought outside.

-Don't be afraid to move out of school hostel to share a house with ur mates. good ones go for around 800-1000 for 3-4 rooms (4-6 occupants, depend on how much u want to save). Sometimes the best deals are when u stay in the same house as the landlord but they can do crazy room dividers/extensions at their backyard and make u feel like a illegal immigrant staying at a cramped room.

-ask for financial assistance. they are somewhat flexible on the tuition payment this is what i like most about riamtec. from what i heard, under-privileged students can pay for their tuition by installments of 2-300 per month (need special permission from the principal bases on per-basis cases). When u graduate they do hold your diploma but u can always request them for job interviews and then pay them back. unable to pay tuition fully before exam? ask permission from principal and they will let u sit for the exam and settle the payment later. If other private institution, they operate as a for-profit business. to me riamtec is like a non-profit education provider (citation needed)

-car pool if u can. befriend the guy with the motorcycle/car. u can buy a bicycle but it ain't cheap and can only get u so far. buy your friend a drink if he drives you around!

-work part-time if u never did before. ur friends may be playing dota2 24/7 but dont envy them. earn some pocket money to lighten ur parents burden and also to learn time management. (I'm not liable for ur missed morning classes, sleepy morning and other side-effects of juggling school and work)

-read up on automotive articles (paultan), especially technical ones (carbibles, aa1car, agcauto) or watch youtube videos on car (ericthecarguy, scottkilmer, engineering explained etc). they help u alot during your assignments (AE) and boost your knowledge. I regret wasting time watching stupid vines on youtube when i could be watching engineering explained about LSD.

-have fun while you toil 2 yrs of ur youth away. visit niah cave with your friends. dine at places like siamese and excapade. go sing karaoke at k-box at parkson. catch the blue tear in miri. my mentor told me "always study hard when u study and party hard in the weekend".

any question regarding riamtec i will try to answer as best as i can. others with experience with colleges like despark, toc, icam, ikbn, topspeed, manfred etc are most welcomed to share and enlighten us.
