War of the transvestites

MALACCA: Local transvestites are upset that foreign ones are eating into their territory at Taman Melaka Raya.

One of the local transvestites here, who calls himself Shasa, said that competition was tough.

“The foreign ones, many of them from Indonesia, are not afraid of us and they have protectors. We have our protectors as well, but the foreigners are strong and they outnumber us,” Shasa said.

A visit to the area showed that the transvestites usually wore heavy make-up and dressed sexily.

Most of the foreign transvestites had entered the country using work and study visas.

The foreign ones found Taman Melaka Raya to be a gold mine as it was a tourist area, state Women, Family Development and Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Norpipah Abdol said.

“We know about them. We are ready to offer counselling and emotional support,” she said.

Norpipah was commenting on The Star report on Monday that scores of transvestites had shifted their operations to the busy commercial hub of the city.

They were doubling up as tour guides to entice visitors as competition drove them to be more creative in getting customers.

Norpipah said the state would get the help of non-governmental organisations and the state Islamic Religious Department to counsel the transvestites.

“They need help, but they should also know that what they are doing is morally wrong,” she said.

Norpipah said the state government would rope in the Immigration Department, Malacca Historic City Council and police to check the status of the transvestites.
