A teenage girl in Brazil has allegedly confessed to torturing her five-year-old brother to death before eating his severed penis.

Police are investigating the possibility that the crime was linked to a black magic ritual because the body was found on the floor surrounded by several candles.

Maycon Roque's heavily mutilated body was found by his mother last Thursday night after a relative broke into the family house in Sao Roque, southeast Brazil, to find 18-year-old Karina standing beside the child's remains.

Detectives said the victim's corpse was found with grotesque injuries.

His head had been partially decapitated, there were knife wounds to his wrists, both eyeballs had been pierced, his feet had been burned.

Karina then allegedly claimed she had 'cut off her brother's genital organs and eaten them.'

According to police, Karina's mother had gone out shopping, leaving her son in the daughter's care.

When she returned a couple of hours later, she discovered the front door locked.

Local media reports that Karina refused to let her mother in, prompting the desperate woman to fetch her brother-in-law, who kicked the door down.

They horrific scene was so macabre that the mother, who police have not named, had to be supported by neighbours after she passed out from the shock.

The suspect allegedly tried to escape when her uncle and other relatives attempted to restrain her.

Detective Anderson Góes said: 'They tried to prevent her from running but she apparently became very aggressive and started throwing objects.

'Her uncle was hit and injured by a stone and she bit the family dog which attacked her while she was being restrained by relatives.'

Police say Karina later admitted that she lured her brother into her bedroom by pretending they were going to play a game, then suffocated him with a pillow.

Preliminary examinations indicate the child was dead before his body was brutally maimed and his body parts cannibalised.

Forensic investigators reportedly found a burned cell phone, a memory card, a penknife and a small amount of marijuana in the house.

Detective Goes said: 'We believe the cell phone belongs to the suspect and was deliberately damaged by her to possibly destroy any evidence of online contacts.

Officers are now investigating whether Karina was in contact with someone who convinced her to carry out the murder after the teen also destroyed her mobile phone
'We are investigating if the child was killed during some kind of devil worshipping ritual. We want to know if the accused had links on social networks to a group of Satanists or black magic practitioners and if she was encouraged or incited by someone to commit the crime.

'She will also undergo tests to see if she is under the influence of drugs.'

Both the phone and memory card have been sent for analysis.

Family members reportedly told police the teen had never given any problems before, was quiet and reserved and had 'always taken care of her brother'.

The suspect has been charged with murder and the attempted murder of her uncle. She is being held in isolation in a cell at Votorantim Women's Prison in Sao Paulo and placed on suicide watch.

The victim was buried on Friday morning. No family member wanted to be identified or to comment on the tragic case.

Doctors in southeastern China have performed surgery to remove 70 magnetic balls from an 11-year-old boy after he inserted them into his penis out of curiosity.

The unnamed boy was taken to Zhejiang University’s School of Medicine Affiliated Children’s Hospital on Sunday night after he complained of pains in his belly, the Hangzhou-based City Express reported.

After X-ray images showed a shadow in his bladder, the boy admitted what he had done.

The 70 balls, each with a diameter of 5mm, were retrieved from his bladder in a minimally invasive operation lasting two hours.

“The balls stick to each other and it’s difficult to remove them as a whole lump, so at the beginning we could only pick up two or three at a time,” Tao Chang, a surgeon at the hospital, was quoted as saying.

“After we had taken out around 50 balls, the remaining ones formed a line and we took those out in one go.”

Magnetic balls are popular among children and a pack of about 200 can be bought online for under US$10.

But incidents such as this have prompted doctors to warn parents against buying them as a toy for their children.

Tao said that doctors at the hospital encountered two or three similar cases per year, with the boys tending to be aged between 10 and 15 and the inserted items including electric wires, needles and, in one case, an 8cm ear scoop.

He said that a boy’s penis could allow an object with a diameter of up to 7-8mm to pass through it.

Michael Navage, a transient in Arizona, United States, got arrested on March 20 for allegedly trying to have sex with his cat. An unknown caller reported to the police that a cat’s screams were heard from Navage’s temporary residence, according to the police report posted by azfamily.com.

One of the witnesses heard the suspect screaming “it’s stuck to my penis,” and calling the cat a “wh*re” and shouting “stop sh*tting.”

The police then called Navage, who said that he was only drying his cat off with a towel.

The man denied that he was trying to have sexual intercourse with the cat, saying that he loves his pet as he has had him since it was a kitten.

Navage also explained that it would have been “impossible” to have sex with the cat because “the girth of his penis is too large for him to penetrate the cat’s anus.”

In an x-ray examination of the cat, it was reported that there was “tearing around the surface of the anus as well as superficial wounds, small cuts around the anus area.”

The police also found bags of crystal meth, a fake 100-dollar bill and credit cards, IDs and checks with different names in the man’s apartment. The suspect admitted that he was selling the illegal substance “for a room and a shower.”

Navage is now facing multiple charges, including bestiality, animal cruelty, forgery and possession of illegal substances.

A former student in East China got to trigger an explosion that instantly demolished a 12-story building at his alma mater, which in turn triggered an outburst of jokes from netizens saying he was living their childhood fantasy of "blowing up the school."

Hu Bin is a demolition expert who learned his trade as an explosives engineer at Anhui University of Science & Technology in Huainan, Anhui Province. His company won the bid to demolish an old teaching building where he used to attend classes.

The building collapsed in a second from a series of well-placed explosives and was recorded and posted on Beijing Time Video on Wednesday.

Netizens immediately recalled an old song from public school about a bird asking a student where he's carrying with a bag of explosives. "I'm going to blow up the school," the student replies. "Bang! The school blows up," goes the refrain.

"I just wanted to do something for my alma mater," said Hu, noting that he did not expect the video of the imploding school building would be a hit online.

A man who was induced into a coma after his genitals were savaged by an Olde English Bulldogge 'was alone in the room with the animal' when the incident happened.

The man, who has not been named, was also alleged to have 'applied peanut butter, or another food spread' onto his crotch area before his genitals were bitten off by the animal, a police source told The Times.

Police in East Lothian, Scotland were alerted after the 22-year-old man was found unconscious and fully clothed in a pool of his own blood in a flat in Haddington in September.

He was then taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, however his organs could not be reattached, as they had been eaten by the dog.

His condition later stabilised and he was then transferred to the Western General Hospital where he has since been assisting police with their enquiries.

There had been previous reports that the man had been held down by others at the property, however a police source dismissed this and confirmed that the man had been alone with the dog, but that others had been present at the property.

A mother in China has apparently sold her child to satisfy her desire for shopping.
The woman, known by her surname Yu, is said to have sold her 19-month-old daughter for 50,000 yuan (£5,800) before jumping on a buying spree for cosmetics on the same day.
Ms Yu, described by Chinese media to be 'young', has been arrested along with the two 'buyers' on suspicion of selling and trafficking a child.

Apparently, Ms Yu initially claimed that her daughter had gone missing at a train station. She reported the supposed missing-person case to the police 20 hours later.
Upon investigation, police found out that Ms Yu received 50,000 yuan (£5,800) in her bank account the day when her daughter went 'missing'.

According to People's Daily Online, Ms Yu travelled with her toddler daughter, Huahua, to Zhengzhou of Henen Province, on the morning of May 20.
She then sold Huahua to two suspected human traffickers, known by their surname Wei and Li respectively, at Zhengzhou railway station before noon.

After receiving Ms Yu's report, Zhengzhou police sent out a team of officers to search around the train station.
They also reviewed security camera footage from the past 24 hours.
As they looked through Ms Yu's transaction history, the officers found a large sum of money that was sent to her bank account around midday, May 20.
Another transaction record suggested that Ms Yu went shopping and spent a whopping 6,000 yuan (£700) on cosmetics and other goods in the afternoon.

The young mother later admitted to the police that she had filed a false police report to avoid her family's suspicion of her selling the child.
According to People's Daily Online, Zhengzhou police suggested Ms Yu contact Ms Wei and Mr Li to get her daughter Huahua back.
The pair of suspects told Ms Yu they wanted an extra 10,000 yuan (£1,200) on top of the original 50,000 yuan (£5,800) before agreeing to meet up.
When the two parties met, police officers barged in rescued Huahua.
They arrested and detained Ms Wei and Mr Li on suspicion of trafficking a child.
Ms Yu was also arrested under article 240 of criminal law in China for intending to sell her daughter to human traffickers.
Zhengzhou police called her husband to pick up the girl while Ms Yu was kept in detention.
'Be good in the cell, I will bring our child to pick you up when you are released from jail,' Ms Yu's husband told her.

SINGAPORE: The tapeworm that grew in the gut of a patient here was so long that it was at least one and a half times his height. When fully stretched out, it measured all of 2.8m.

In order for it to be captured in an image taken by the Singapore General Hospital's (SGH) Department of Microbiology, the worm had to be folded 18 times to fit into the picture.

Despite its length, the patient showed no signs at all that a parasite was growing in his body.

"The patient was somewhat appalled when the worm was passed out via the rectum," said infectious diseases expert Hsu Li Yang.

He shared this 2016 case with The Sunday Times when asked for local examples of people being infected with parasites like worms after eating uncooked or undercooked seafood.

The Washington Post reported earlier this month that a 30-year-old man who ate raw fish almost every day found a 1.6m-long tapeworm hanging from his rear end. He had stomach cramps and bloody diarrhoea after eating salmon sashimi. The tapeworm, which kept on coming out from his anus, was pulled out of his body alive and moving.

Professor Hsu said the 2.8m-long worm seen in Singapore was clearly a tapeworm as no other human parasite can grow to such a length.

"The question is what tapeworm, which will also help answer how the patient had acquired the worm."

An adult tapeworm has a head, neck and chain of segments called proglottids. During an intestinal infection, the tapeworm head sticks to the intestinal wall, and the proglottids grow and produce eggs.

People get tapeworms mostly by eating undercooked pork, beef or fish. From the egg obtained from a segment of the 2.8m-long tapeworm excreted out, the SGH's Department of Microbiology said the egg most closely resembled those of fish tapeworms.

Most fish tapeworms are acquired by the consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater fish, as well as fish that spend a considerable amount of their life in fresh water, such as salmon.

Prof Hsu suspects infestation with fish tapeworms has increased over the years in Singapore, similar to the situation in other developed countries where raw fish consumption has been on the rise. But he said this cannot be confirmed as no data is recorded and people who are infected may not have any symptoms.

According to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), 84,027 tonnes of fish were consumed in 2016.

However, parasitic infections – which are treated with medications – happen rarely. While many people with tapeworm infection do not have symptoms, others may experience nausea, weakness, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Prof Hsu is aware of only two fish tapeworm cases last year.

Other common parasites found in seafood include roundworms and flukes, a kind of flatworm.

Over at the National University Hospital (NUH), the longest worm seen so far was a 1m-long pork tapeworm five years ago.

NUH sees about two to three worm cases a year, said Dr Jolene Oon, a consultant at its division of infectious diseases. However, these cases may include other worms like hookworms that are acquired from poor sanitation practices overseas and not from eating raw food.

While parasitic infections are rare, there have been cases of bacterial infections from consuming raw or undercooked seafood.

One well-known example is the Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection from consuming raw fish. There was a major GBS outbreak in Singapore in 2015 (see other story).

Another example is scombroid poisoning, which is due to the improper storage and handling of fish, resulting in spoilage. When the fish decays and is broken down by bacteria, a toxin is produced.

Dr Goh E. Shaun, a consultant at Raffles Hospital, gave an example of such a case a few months ago, involving a couple who ate pan-seared tuna from a local Italian chain restaurant.

He said: "They had rashes, abdominal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhoea. Both were treated in the emergency department and recovered in a few hours."

Doctors said it is very hard to tell with the naked eye if a piece of raw fish is contaminated.

Only experienced sushi chefs and fish suppliers can detect parasite cysts in the flesh of the fish, said Prof Hsu.

Even as Chinese New Year rolls around and lohei season starts, doctors said there is no cause for worry.

Said Dr Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious diseases physician at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital: "The risk of catching something from eating raw food is extremely low in Singapore. But be extremely... religious about cleanliness and don't eat raw fish if your immunity is poor."

If consumers buy pre-packed yusheng, AVA said they should check that the food packaging is intact and food items are not bruised or mouldy, keep it chilled until it is ready to be served and eat it within two hours of mixing. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
