About my decision on getting this laptop:
I am currently a software developer. I have some personal software projects that I work on. Apart from that, I am just a casual gamer and I work on some music making as well. I also do video editing with Sony Vegas and video encoding from time to time.

Previously I was using an Asus A45 during my university days. Its a 14" i5 with 10GB RAM and 500GB hdd. Works fine but it has 2 drawbacks:
1. It gets hot. When I say gets hot, yes I mean the palm area where your left hand rests on. You will surely tell me to clean the fan. Yes, I have tried to open up the laptop. However there is a latch that I couldn't release at the part that holds the screen. I'm not gonna use brute force to try and open it because that may result in me breaking the hinge to the screen completely. I have tried using compressed air to blow the fan but there are not much improvements. The hard disk is right below my palm.
2. Using several software such as FL Studio is a pain because the screen is not large enough to hold enough items. Also, its difficult if I want to split my screen into 2(eg: browser at the left and word processor at the right) because things are quite cram.

After checking out several laptop manufacturers, I came to the conclusion that Illegear's offerings is the best bang for the buck. I dropped by their shop and checked out several of their laptops. I was keen in getting the Q5(because I think its specs is enough for my use) or the S5(because of the x3 heat sync and vents plus its easy to remove the base to access the vents to clean).

Finally, I decided to make my order for the S5 before the Raya promotion ends(free professional colour calibration, 1TB SSHD, IC Diamond). However after a week, they told me theres no stock for the 970m si I have to wait a while longer. The next week, they told me that Clevo has stopped manufacturing that chipset and I would have to wait till mid of the next month for the new lot with new Intel processor and I have to pay more due to the USD to Ringgit conversion rate. I asked for other options and the guy recommended me to upgrade to S7 where he says theres still stock but I have to add another RM300 for the upgrade. Hence I decided to get the S7.

Review:
This review is made after about a month after purchase.

Body:
In terms of appearance, this laptop looks rather neutral. It doesn't have the "gaming" laptop kind of feel but more of a standard laptop with some premiumness in it.

It isn't thick. It comes with 4 USB 3.0 ports where 1 of them also works as a SATA port(the one at the rear). On the left side, theres 1 HDMI port, 1 USB and 2 mini DisplayPort ports. On the right side theres 1 eathernet port, 1 sd card reader, 2 USB ports, headphone, microphone and S/PDIF jack. These 3 jacks can be used to attach speakers for 5.1 surround sound. According to their website, the headphone jack has a built in amplifier. I have a Bayerdynamic DT 770 Pro which goes well with this. Moving on to the rear, there is a power port and SATA/USB port. On the top, there are twin front facing speakers(facing upwards) which gives clearer sound unlike some which faces the table at the rear of the laptop which sound isnt great and requires the laptop to be raised up to have clearer sound. However when it comes to actual sound quality, the actual sound output is rather mediocre. Theres nothing to shout about. Having a subwoofer makes no difference despite whatever settings I set it to. I can't even feel it when pressing my hands on it. At the Illegear shop, setting max volume gives distortion. Messing with the on board Sound Blaster X-Fi 3 software, there isn't much settings which are worth messing with. Normally 1 preset is enough to fit all forms of applications. The keyboard area uses a plastic which makes some stary effects. Better than just plain black plastic. The keyboard keys have some rubberised feel(i believe its coated with some form of rubber or soft plastic). Typing is not an issue as the keys are quite accurate. Only thing is finger marks especially from facial oil are easily left behind with your exact finger print which can be seen very obviously. The palm rest area has a brushed aluminum finishing.

As you can see, the aluminum finishing is lower than the edge causing lines on your wrist if you were to rest your hand on it. VERY BAD DESIGN. When contacting Illegear, they said its like that. You can imagine what your wrist looks like after intensive gaming. Touch pad is accurate and doesn't run like if you were to use an Asus touchpad. Facing you will be plenty of LED's that shows the status of things such as if dedicated graphics card is used, number pad toggled, disk usage, power, etc. Just gotta get used to the position of where everything is because top down looking at the engraving isn't really helpful unless you are looking sideways.

Screen:
Since its an IPS, there is not much to say apart from very good viewing angles. I am not a professional at looking at colours so I cannot mention much about the colours or professional colour calibration. Other than that, the screen is clear, sharp and the matte finishing gives good anti glare to the screen.

Performance:
On battery, the graphics card limits max framerate of games to 30 fps. This is kinda not good because games don't feel smooth. Testing higher requirement games other than DotA 2, Grid 2 and Autosport looks SHINY. These are under max settings. Batman Arkham Knight is unplayable until it is properly patched by the developers. I am forced to play it in windowed mode which often misses a lot of frames like if you were to watch an Internet life stream with poor connection.

Gaming in Dota 2 gives me 120 fps with temperatures of ~90 degrees which was not what the Illegear people told me. Please note that I am using automatic fan speed settings and the back of the laptop is raised up with a deck of cards therefore there is better air flow underneath the laptop. Since the vents are at the side and back, there should be no restriction of the exhaust. Hot air tends to come out from the left vent while the rear 2 vents seem to blow out slightly warmer than room temperature air.

Working on Sony Vegas 1080p video rendering requires slightly more than x2 the time of the video. Say a video I am editing requires some trimming here and there and the total length is about 1 hour long, total time to complete is about 2 hours 30 minutes. CPU usage will be 100% at this time but the laptop's response time has only a minor delay which is hardly noticeable. Temperatures can reach up to 98 degrees which is quite worrying. The palm rest area turns a little warm, not enough to cause burns unless maybe ur hand is resting on it too long. Not sure if CUDA was actually working as MSI afterburner only reports <20% GPU usage during rendering. Note that I have selected use CUDA if available and Sony Vegas did detect that I have CUDA.

Battery:
Battery life is about what your average laptop gives although I havent bench-marked it yet. However battery once at 10% drains extra fast.

Conclusion:
I think there was no mistake making this purchase. However I do hope Illegear improves on the design part a little where if you rest your hand on the table and palm at the aluminum area, there will be lines drawn on the wrist. This is really annoying. Also speakers could be improved.

Octopads on Kickstarter

Reason for using Octopads:
1. Microsuction technology which allows you to pasted and removed whenever you want to. Also can be stucked to almost any surface. I am using an A5 in my office and I have removed it and stucked it back more than 5 times without cleaning the microsuction pads.
2. Erasable. Unlike whiteboards where when you write on it even using whiteboard marker, it will eventually become permanent if not cleaned off after a long time, Octopads doesn't have that problem. I have recently erased some notes since last year and it was no different from erasing freshly written notes. See here for demonstration.
3. Works like a mini whiteboard. Draw whatever, write whatever, scribble whatever and erase it when no longer in use. Can be used to decorate like drawing pictures on it then pasting it as if its a picture. After all, its your artwork.

Why optical zoom is better than digital zoom?
Optical zoom uses a lens to take a more focus shot while digital zoom crops, stretches the image then performs image processing to make the object in the picture larger thus more pixelated.
