When to sign job offer letter?

Hi All,

I just received a job offer by a co. in KL. They hired very fast. Monday I sent my resume, Tuesday called me for 1st interview, Wednesday 2nd interview, Thursday they called to say I got the job. Today (Friday) they asked me when can I start. Since today is already 22nd July, I said 1st August. Start a new month and also got a few days for me to arrange my things. But they said 1st August too late, 25th July can or not? I said a bit too rush and finally they gave me 26th July, one day extra only.

What do you all think? Something suspicious? Why so fast? Are they desperate?

Then I asked when can I get the offer letter? Can I take it earlier so that I can take back to slowly read it? Their reply is cannot. Their company policy says cannot take out from the office unless I signed it already. Then I asked, if hard copy cannot, can they send a soft copy in advance first? Also cannot. They say why not I come to the office on the 26th, sign the letter on the spot and start working that very same day.

Now, I'm wondering... how many of you out there experience the same thing - cannot take offer letter home? I've worked before and my previous companies allow a few days to read and then sign and return back to them. Has anyone sign the letter in the office first, then only can take the letter out of the office? Is this the practise of companies nowadays?

Distance from home to office

Hi everyone,

I travel about 40km one-way to my office everyday. All in, it's about 80km a day.

In the morning, I leave my house at 6:30am to avoid traffic jam. You guys should know how bad traffic jam is in Klang Valley in the mornings.

In the evening, I finish work at 5:30pm, but take me about 2 hours to get home cos have to drive through heavy traffic again. Plus eating dinner before going home, I normally reach home around 9pm.

And as you all know, there are toll everywhere in Klang Valley. I spend about RM4 - 6 per day depending which route I use to go to the office. Travelling expenses is very high. Not only $$ but also time and energy waiting in the traffic jam.

So, what's the distance you guys and girls out there travel to work everyday and how much do you spend on toll and petrol per day/month? I calculated - about RM400/month for me.

Another thing, do you think it's worth it getting a less paying (less by 200) job but much nearer to home?

Admin: if there's another similar topic, kindly delete this.
