Since the topic of bitcoin and cryptocoins are a hot topic on /k/ these days, thought I share with you an inspiring story about a local Malaysian crypto enthusiast who approached the riches of crypto from another direction, via social media marketing methods and earning "bounties", as it is commonly called in the cryptocoin-sphere.

FYI, these bounties are a sort of coin rewards given out to participants who contribute social media content, art & designs, or text translations to support promotional activities of new and upcoming cryptocoin projects.

The coin in question this time is Bancor Protocol, a new coin which has just completed a record-breaking USD 150 million ICO crowdfunding event last Monday. This token generation event minted around 79 million units of Bancor tokens (BNT), which have an initial starting value pegged at 100 BNT = 1 ETH, or roughly $3.30 USD per BNT at this time of writing.

Based on the bounty program infos that I skimmed through, it is estimated that 1.2% of the BNTs generated are reserved for bounty program participants, which comes up to 948,000 BNT. Bounty participants earn "Bounty tokens" via social media and translation activities, the tokens are then redeemable for BNT after the Bancor markets and redemption smart contracts come online.

The Bounty token to BNT redemption ratio is not officially stated yet but from the discussion threads, bounty participants have estimated the average ratio to be roughly 1 Bounty token = ~0.5 BNT.

Digging around their bounty section, I stumbled upon the user profile of local Malaysian individual who had up till today earned a total of 11,778 bounty tokens, appears mainly from translating blogposts from English to BM and some social media activities over the course of a one month period.

This brings our hero's potential earnings to about 5889 BNT or 58.89 ETH or $19610.37 USD!

Yes that's right, a clever and enterprising Malaysian achieved near 20k USD just doing English -> BM translations, very well earned and worthy of the jealousy from sub-20k/month ktards.

SIBU: The probe into the shooting at Long Bridge Road, off Lanang Road, on Jan 9 has taken on a new twist as the police yesterday arrested the bodyguard of slain Ting Meng Min.

The bodyguard from Sabah was hired by Ting for his protection.

It is understood that he used to work in Peninsular Malaysia and he has a licensed pistol for his job.

Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi confirmed the arrest, saying they were now probing the bodyguard under Section 39 of the Fire Arms Act 1960.

The police chief did not go into the details of their probe except that the police were concerned whether there was a need for him to shoot back after the vehicle of the killer was speeding away, and whether there was any element of self defence.

The police were concerned because there were many people taking supper at the few coffee shops in the vicinity and the road used by the speeding vehicle was heavily congested.

The police were taking these into consideration for public interest.

The bodyguard was remanded for four days starting yesterday.

The shooting occurred when 30-year-old Ting was having supper with his friend Xiao Fen, two bodyguards and two other friends in a coffeeshop corridor.

They were standing up to leave after having settled the bill when a vehicle pulled up from the back lane to fire up to three shots on Ting, killing him and wounding Xiao Fen.

One of the bodyguards returned fire as the vehicle was speeding off, firing up to six to seven shots.

According to the police, they had questioned the bodyguard shortly after the incident.

It is learnt the bodyguard could not be sure whether his shots had hit the vehicle of the killer and whether he had shot any of the three persons in the vehicle.

The police have checked with the hospital and clinics in Sibu, and no one had sought treatment for gunshot wounds.

The police have also checked with the car repair workshops in Sibu and found no vehicle with gunshot holes being taken to any of them for repair.

Meanwhile, Ting’s woman friend who was shot in the incident was discharged from the hospital yesterday.

Xiao Fen from Wenzhou, Zhejiang, has recovered from the shot wounds. She was shot on her left arm and wrist.

The 22-year-old will return to China on Jan 25.

As she is a star witness in the shooting, the police will require her to come back to help in the case if there is a need. The police have already recorded her statement.

Xiao Fen came to Sarawak a year ago and befriended Ting when she was working at a pub in Miri.

A TOTAL OF 77,790 Brunei-registered vehicles are on the Polis Di Raja Malaysia (PDRM) blacklist for various traffic offences and owners need to settle the fines or their cars will be impounded upon entering Malaysia.

Malaysian police yesterday began ordering motorists from Brunei to pull over and settle their fines if their vehicles were among the thousands on the blacklist for offences committed from years 2000 to 2014.

RAISING FUNDS FOR ROBBI SAPINGGI'S FAMILY:

It is with great sadness we share that one of our beloved colleagues and dedicated mountain guides, Robbi Sapinggi has passed away following the Magnitude 6.1 earthquake that hit Ranau yesterday. Robbi was a man of passion, he loved his job and the people he worked with. He was always joyful and his spirit was contagious.

The entire Amazing Borneo team will be attending Robbi's funeral tomorrow at 2pm in Kiau Village, Ranau--Robbi's hometown. Robbi left behind his wife and a 6 months old baby boy.

We have received inquiries asking how they can donate to Robbi. We have tried to get the bank account details of Robbi's direct family members but was not available due to the overwhelming situation they are experiencing. Hence we have now created this crowd funding for Robbi Sapinggi, who is indeed the unsung hero in this tragedy.

Mount Kinabalu Updates:

We are deeply saddened to inform that we have lost one of our mountain guides Robbi Sapinggi due to the unfortunate mishap this morning 5 June 2015 at Mount Kinabalu. Robbi was accompanying our climber when he got hit by falling rocks.

Despite being injured, Robbi’s only thought was for the welfare of his guest, urging his guest to continue ahead to climb down the mountain to safety. He bravely chose to remain alone and wait for help rather than to put the guest’s life at further risk. Unfortunately, Robbi was unable to make it down the mountain in time to receive proper medical attention and he died due to loss of blood.

Robbi has been a dedicated member of the Mount Kinabalu team for the past two years, and always brought good experiences to our climbers. We received countless reviews about his excellent service throughout his time with us, and we are proud to say that he heroically took care of his guests all the way to the end. His passing is a great loss, not only to his family but also to Sabah Parks and our organization. He will always be our unsung Hero.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Jonna Baquilas of the Philippines who encountered him during a climb for Coalition Duchenne back in 2012 said:

“When I was climbing Mt. Kinabalu in 2012, alone in a sea of people, I gave up just a quarter of the way towards the summit. I don't know if it was out of fear, exhaustion or sheer lack of determination, but I just couldn't push myself any longer. I was crying, and I never felt so alone. I was with a hundred strangers.
Robbi was one of the guides of our group. When he learned about my doubts in proceeding to the summit, he didn't encourage me to go on. He said there will always be a next time, and if I was not emotionally ready, we should just head back to Laban Rata. He also didn't proceed to the summit, and stayed with me instead. I felt ashamed of myself for being a failure, but he assured me that there's no shame in prioritizing health and safety.
I was shivering from the cold, and my gloves were wet from grabbing onto the rope. My fingers were almost frozen. Without hesitation, he removed his gloves and gave them to me. He kept me warm in a hut while waiting for sunrise, and calmed my nerves with his antics.
On our way down, he got my camera and took really good photos of me. We talked about Manila, Filipinos, and the Filipino TV drama series "Pangako sa Yo." Apparently it was shown in Malaysia, and he was a big fan! I told him I will come back to Mt. Kinabalu to reach the summit, and I will get him as my personal guide next time.
It is sad to learn that one great soul was claimed by the mountain during the earthquake yesterday. Robbi was a good man, and his passion to keep climbers safe and happy is unquestionable.
Robbi, you were a great man. Please know that you've touched so many lives. I'm sure that when I decide to climb Mt. Kinabalu again, I will hear your laughter resonating through the mountains.”

MIRI: A 13-year-old Iban student attending SMK Lutong lodged a police report against a teacher on March 25 for being forced to convert without parental consent.

According to the report lodged by the complainant, she was brought by a teacher she knew to a house in the Samling residential area in Kuala Baram accompanied by two women and three men.

At the house, she was led to ‘membaca doa dalam agama Islam’, after which she was given RM250 and Muslim prayer garments.

They had allegedly arranged for a date to take her to Jabatan Agama Islam on March 16 but she attests that she had no intention of converting.

In a formal letter of complaint on March 24 to the principal of SMK Lutong signed by her parents and grandparents, two teachers were accused in the case of alleged forced conversion, citing that they had not only given her money to buy prayer garments but had also been given a Muslim name and would be provided with a new nametag with said name.

MIRI: A scrap-metal worker and his wife are claiming that certain teachers from peninsula Malaysia transferred to schools here are luring local teenage Christian students with cash and then converting them to Islam without their parents' consent.

The couple alleged that their 13-year-old daughter, a Form One student here, was taken to a house by two teachers and several individuals and given RM250 in cash.

She was then asked to recite some prayers and was given some Islamic attire to wear.

They then told the girl she would be taken to the Islamic Department in Miri for registration.

The girl returned home and told the parents about the incident, and the family lodged a police report against the teachers concerned on March 25.

The family sought help from the Miri PKR office, which arranged for a press conference.

Human rights lawyer Abun Sui, who is also a PKR grassroots leader, and several Iban non-governmental organisations were also present.

The father of the girl claimed that there were three other teenage girls being targeted for conversion at the school.

"We were told that the teachers are from Kelantan and they were posted here by the Education Ministry," claimed the father of the girl.

MIRI: A Frenchwoman became the victim of a road bully when she was attacked and assaulted by a woman who was enraged after the foreigner shouted at her to stop reversing her car for fear that it might hit her mother who was standing a few inches behind the car.

According to sources, in the 11am incident yesterday at a parking lot in Krokop 10 here, the 44-year-old Frenchwoman and her mother were about to open the trunk of their car to put in the groceries that they had bought at the market when a car parked next to theirs suddenly reversed and almost knocked down the mother.

To prevent her mother from being knocked down, the woman immediately shouted at the driver to stop reversing the car.

But her shouts infuriated the female driver.

As she stepped out of her car, the enraged driver spat at the woman and took out an umbrella to hit her.

During the confrontation, the victim was hit on her forehead.

A friend of the driver, who was with her during the incident, asked her to stop the attack but to no avail.

Passersby pulled over and tried to persuade the angry driver to calm down and apologise to the victim.

She then drove away.

The victim managed to take pictures of her car.

A police report was lodged by the victim at Miri Central Police station the same day.

Police are investigating the case.

Some road users took photographs of the incident and posted them on the social media.

The bitcoin community isn’t too happy about Apple banning the last available bitcoin wallet from its App Store. Many of those who truly believe in the digital currency are now smashing their iPhones in protest of Apple’s policy — and in the hopes of winning a free Android phone.

These rather amusing protests show just how much bitcoin means to the true believers, but it also highlights the tension between these zealots and the everyday world. Apple’s ban may be a response to uncertainty over how government regulators will treat the digital currency.

Apple banned the popular Blockchain wallet yesterday, and the protest started very early this morning when, on the popular discussion site reddit, someone named “round-peg” promised to hand out Nexus 5 phones to people who posted videos of themselves smashing working iPhones — one phone for every 100 up-votes on the site. The post was quickly up-voted to the front of reddit, and then removed, apparently for violating reddit’s policy, which prohibits reddit vote manipulation.

The first person to do it was Jeremy — a missionary on furlough from Argentina, who asked that we not use his last name. He smashed his iPhone with a steel bar, whispering as he did it because it was the middle of the night, and he didn’t want to wake up his wife and kids. “Go bitcoin. Down with Apple,” he says after obliterating the device:

Though he’s suffering from a cold, the offer was enough to get Ryan, a computer network engineer, to drive out to a Dallas range and shoot up his iPhone with a rifle:

Ryan hasn’t received confirmation that he’ll actually get a Nexus, but he says that “round-peg” has put $2,000 in escrow to pay for the phones, and he believes that one will show up. Even if it doesn’t, he hopes the attention will draw viewers to his YouTube channel — and send a message to Apple. “I use a lot of their products, but it seemed like kind of a bunk deal,” he says of the bitcoin wallet ban.

Apple hasn’t commented on why it’s not allowing bitcoin wallets in its App Store, but many think the company may be nervous about the regulatory requirements surrounding bitcoin, or that Apple sees the nascent peer-to-peer payment system as a competitor to iTunes. Previously, the company had pulled another wallet built by Blockchain’s biggest competitor, Coinbase.

Reached later this morning, “round-peg” said “6 or 7,” videos have now been posted. “The community is really rallying though — which is great. We got words of encouragement from people all over the world,” said Nicolas Cary, Blockchain’s CEO, via instant message.
