John Terry leaving

Chelsea confirm John Terry will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season

Terry has been at Stamford Bridge for more than two decades and played 713 times for the Blues since his debut in 1998.

He currently stands third in the club's list of all-time appearance makers and holds the record for captaining Chelsea, something Terry has done on 578 occasions.

Terry's playing time under Antonio Conte has been more sporadic but he will have the chance to help Chelsea win a fifth Premier League title before leaving in the summer.

The 36-year-old has also won the FA Cup five times, three League Cups, the Champions League in 2012 and the Europa League a year later.

Terry was also a regular in the England side, winning 78 caps and skippering the side on 34 occasions.

He said on the club's website: "After 22 years there is so much to say and so many people to thank at this great football club.

"From coaches, team-mates and staff to the fans who have given me so much support down the years, I can't thank you enough. There will be opportunities for me to speak further about this over the coming weeks.

"I will decide on my future in due course, but for now I am committed to helping the team achieve success this season.

"The club and I have always had a fantastic relationship, which will continue beyond my playing days. We had some really positive talks but with everything taken into careful consideration I have decided it's the right time for me to leave.

"I've always been conscious that I depart at the right time, in the right way, and I feel that the end of this season is the right time for the club and I. I feel I still have plenty to offer on the pitch but understand that opportunities here at Chelsea will be limited for me.

"I'm eager to carry on playing and so will be looking to continue with a new challenge. I will of course always be a Blue and am desperate to end my final season as a Chelsea player with more silverware.

"Finally, words cannot describe the love I have for our football club and our amazing Chelsea fans. I would like to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for the unbelievable support you've shown me over the years.

"You mean the world to me and every trophy we've won during my time at the club we've won together. I will never forget the incredible journey we've been on. Thank you so much for everything."

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/116...d-of-the-season

thank you john terry, forever united legend

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[@issit!] [@max_cavalera] [@briantwj] [@nearlee]

Mcd Malaysia allegedly exploit workers

Workers for McDonald's in Malaysia say they were victims of labour exploitation

Migrant workers employed through labour supply firm allege they were deceived about wages, cheated of payments and had passports confiscated unlawfully

Workers at McDonald’s restaurants in Malaysia claim they earned as little as 60p an hour and were cheated out of months of salary, a Guardian investigation has found.

The workers allege they were subjected to months – and in some cases years – of exploitation by Human Connection HR, a labour supply company contracted by McDonald’s in Malaysia to provide workers to its restaurants in Kuala Lumpur.

The workers, who come from Nepal, say they had their passports confiscated, in contravention of Malaysian law.

They claim they were deceived about their wages and were charged additional fees when they arrived in Malaysia, resulting in a 25% deduction in their basic monthly salary. Over the course of working at McDonald’s, this equated to the loss of months of wages.

Unlike in its other major markets – including the UK and US – where McDonald’s operates through a franchise model, McDonald’s outlets in Malaysia are company-owned.

The migrants also say that their salaries were not received on time, leaving them unable to buy food or send money home to their families.
Analysis Malaysia: forced labour casts dark shadow over electronics industry
Migrant workers are the fuel driving the electronics boom, yet some face exploitation, poor living conditions, curtailed freedom and harassment
Read more

“We didn’t have the money to eat because we were not paid regularly,” said one man, adding that some workers went on strike earlier this year in protest at late payment of wages. “How can we go to work on an empty stomach? I thought it was a good company and I would earn good money. Now my life is damaged. I feel that I have no future.”

McDonald’s Malaysia said in an email that it had ended its contract with Human Connection. “At McDonald’s Malaysia, the welfare of staff is a top priority,” said the company. “Earlier this year, we became aware of certain circumstances relating to services provided by Human Connection HR which were not in compliance with our standards. As a result, we have terminated our contract with them.”

The investigation, which comes just days after the Guardian exposed allegations of abuse among migrants making products for Samsung and Panasonic in industrial zones across the country, sheds further light on the malpractice of some labour supply agencies used by major international brands in Malaysia.

“We were not given our salary on time,” said another Nepalese worker. “When we went to meet the managers of McDonald’s to complain, they usually said we were not employed by McDonald’s and they are not responsible for anything. One of my friends even went to the McDonald’s manager crying after he heard news of his child’s death [at home in Nepal]. He asked him to ask for his passport [from Human Connection, so that he could attend the funeral,] but the McDonald’s manager said that he cannot do anything. I would rather die than go back to work at McDonald’s. I will never work there [again].”

The Guardian spoke to 15 Nepalese workers formerly employed at four McDonald’s restaurants in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. The men worked at McDonald’s at different times over the course of three years.

More than half said that they had been forced to run away from their jobs without their passports or back pay, entering the illegal work market in an attempt to make some money. This would leave them vulnerable to arrest and detention by the Malaysian authorities.

Others said they had been forced to pay their own way back to Nepal after their passports were not returned by Human Connection.

Some of the workers criticised McDonald’s for failing to respond to complaints of mistreatment by Human Connection while they were working in McDonald’s outlets.

They claim that they repeatedly informed the company about problems relating to wages, salary deductions and passports, but received no assistance.

“I complained about our salary to McDonald’s many times, and the branch manager … sent the message to McDonald’s headquarters,” said one worker. “[But] McDonald’s said they had already paid Human Connection.”

The manager of one McDonald’s branch that previously employed some of the workers claims that the company’s headquarters in Malaysia were informed about the problems the men faced: “The labour supply company withheld two to three months’ wages. The workers only had a photocopy of their documents, but they should have had the original with them. We are humans. We tried to help them with food, but you can’t do it all the time.”

During their time working in McDonald’s restaurants, the men claim they were paid less than they were promised in Nepal. In some of their contracts it states that they would not have to pay the foreign worker levy, a charge placed on companies using migrant labour in Malaysia that is often passed on to the workers themselves. Payslips seen by the Guardian show that the levy was deducted, however, equating to a 25% reduction in their basic wages.

The workers also claim that they had their passports confiscated by the labour supply company on arrival in Malaysia, a pervasive but illegal practice that ties them to their employer and denies them the freedom to leave their job or the country.

“The supply company took our passports, but they will not send workers back to Nepal or give our passports back,” said one man formerly working at a McDonald’s restaurant. “Even those who finished the three-year contract cannot go home because they don’t have their passports.”

Another worker said: “Even when it is time to go, the company does not return your passport. I don’t know why … I asked to go home, but the company said they will not send me back.”

The workers who chose to return home have had to pay the equivalent of two months’ basic wages to a middleman to arrange the documents and paperwork needed to get them back to Nepal without their passports.

“I expected to earn money here,” said one. “But I’m leaving with nothing.”

The men also complained about the conditions they faced in the accommodation provided by Human Connection while they worked in McDonald’s restaurants.

The Guardian visited one squalid hostel with paint peeling off the damp walls. McDonald’s advertising banners were used as makeshift curtains. In one room, a McDonald’s trophy was propped up on a fan switch with “Best of the Best Kitchen Crew” printed on its base. At one point, the workers say, 18 men were crammed into the small flat, with most sleeping on mattresses on the floor. They shared one small, grimy toilet, which also passed as a washroom.

In a statement, McDonald’s said: “While local employees make up the vast majority – more than 90% – of our workforce, we sometimes work with established recruitment agencies which employ foreign workers, and sub-contract a number of them to McDonald’s in Malaysia. These staff members are employees of the recruitment agency, not McDonald’s.

“McDonald’s Malaysia made repeated attempts with Human Connection HR to investigate and verify issues of non-compliance shared by the workers, raising our serious concerns through both verbal and written correspondence. Because the workers are not employees of McDonald’s, our efforts to address the issues were unsuccessful, as were proposals for McDonald’s to assume responsibility for paying workers directly. In the interim, to assist, we authorised restaurants to provide food and provisions to workers affected while we worked to address the issue.

“Following the termination of our contract, the workers remain employees of Human Connection HR and as such we understand that they will either return to their home country or be redeployed to other businesses.”

Human Connection did not respond to a request for comment on the worker’s allegations.

Aidan McQuade, director of Anti-Slavery International, said businesses must no longer hide behind codes of conduct but should instead take proactive measures to ensure they are not profiting from exploited labour.

“The great tragedy about this kind of exploitation is that it is actually easy to fix,” he said. “Companies operating and profiting from their business in places like Malaysia can’t say that they are not aware of the issues facing migrant workers there. They need to take a proactive investigative approach to ensuring that, if they use labour supply companies, those companies are adhering to the law and corporate codes of conduct. It’s time for this to stop.”

https://www.theguardian.com/global-developm...tion?CMP=twt_gu

TLDR - #boikotmekd

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Steven Gerrard confirms retirement from football

Liverpool legend Slippy Gerrard has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

The former Reds captain, who spent 17 years in the first team at Anfield and was the club’s skipper from 2003 until his departure in the summer of 2015, confirmed the decision on Thursday morning.

In a statement, he said: “Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football.

“I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.”

The Huyton-born midfielder graduated from Liverpool’s Academy and made his senior debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in November 1998, ultimately clocking up 710 games and 186 goals.

Blessed with natural abilities that made him one of the leading midfielders of his generation, Gerrard was a key figure in the treble-winning season of 2000-01, aiding Gerard Houllier’s team to triumphs in the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup.

His influence steadily grew at Anfield and Houllier handed the Scouser the captain’s armband in October 2003, heralding the beginning of the most consistent and prolific era of his career.

Following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager, Gerrard was the talisman of Liverpool’s sensational run to Champions League glory in 2004-05.

A memorable strike against Olympiacos ensured the Reds progressed from the tournament’s group stage and kick-started a fairytale journey to the final in Istanbul.

There, his boyhood side trailed 3-0 to Italian giants AC Milan – but his determination was the catalyst behind an historic comeback, with his header the first of three responses that drew the tie level and paved the way for Benitez’s charges to win the trophy on penalties.

Gerrard was the inspiration behind the club’s 2006 FA Cup triumph, scoring twice in the final with West Ham United – which has subsequently been named after him – en route to another shootout success via a 3-3 draw.

He also helped Liverpool return to the Champions League showpiece in 2007, though on that occasion they were beaten by Milan, and claim a second-place finish in the 2008-09 Premier League.

The No.8 lifted the League Cup under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish in 2012, and was appointed the captain of his country – for whom he amassed 114 caps before retiring from international football in 2014.

That year, Gerrard came closest to winning the only domestic honour that eluded him, the Premier League, as the Reds produced a stunning charge to take the title race to the final day only to be pipped by Manchester City.

After bidding farewell to Anfield at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Gerrard joined LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, where he played 34 games and scored five goals.

He said: “Thank you to the amazing fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career. Your loyalty and support has meant the world.

“I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be. I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.”

[@issit!]

Consumer groups:New halal logo may confuse Muslims

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — The proposed new halal logo for Muslim-made products may encourage the use of false logos and raise doubts on whether such items are genuinely permissible for Muslims, local consumer groups said today.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) deputy president Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said the Malaysia International Institute of Islamic Cooperation (Ikiam) should not go ahead with issuing the new halal logo, as it is against current laws on halal certification.

He pointed out that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and state Islamic departments — which are given the sole mandate by the government under local laws to issue halal certificates — use a “standard halal logo”.

“Why should Ikiam come out with own halal logo? There should be only one halal logo for the country.

“I don’t think any new party should issue new halal certification because it will confuse consumers and people will be confused which one is actually halal,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted today.

A new halal logo on top of Jakim’s existing halal logo would not only be “double work”, but would also raise questions over whether Ikiam had the necessary resources and procedures in place like Jakim to truly verify that products are permissible for Muslims to use.

“Because there is already standard procedure for halal certification and halal auditing process and it is already established, so if another party wants to issue a halal certification, they should have SOP. Because halal certification is complicated, if other parties want to issue, I’m worried whether they have the SOP to convince consumers that is halal,” he said.

Yusof noted that a private company was previously allowed to issue halal certificates, but said the government had stopped this through amendments to laws under the Trade Description Act due to “integrity” concerns.

He said that consumers are already confident about the halal certification now issued solely by Jakim and state Islamic departments, with complaints only on whether businesses have actually obtained halal certification issued by Jakim.

Even if the government allows Ikiam to issue a separate halal logo for Muslim-made products, the fees payable for such certification should be regulated to prevent it from being too high and should also not be passed on to consumers, he said.

“In my opinion, since there is already halal certification by Jakim and state Islamic departments and they already have the procedure, I think it should remain the same,” he said, adding that Ikiam and the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) should first consult Jakim and the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism.

As for the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), it also said consumers would likely be confused with the introduction of another halal logo dedicated to Muslim-made products.

“If we get too many logos, consumers may be confused. The other people may want to fake it and fake these kind of logos and get away with it,” the association’s chairman SM Mohamed Idris told Malay Mail Online when contacted today.

With information on the proposed new logo being very vague, CAP said it might end up becoming merely an “advertising” advantage to manufacturers if it is a voluntary scheme.

“If they really want to implement such a thing, a lot of parties have to discuss and thrash it out, so we need to have more discussions on it, then we can see the feasibility of another halal logo and see what are the benefits and if it will affect others,” CAP said.

Those involved in discussions should include all interested parties such as Jakim, both Muslim and non-Muslim manufacturers, consumers bodies, while a consumer survey should also be carried out to probe public understanding on the halal logo, it said.

On Saturday, Risda chairman Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin was reported saying that the development body plans to launch the new halal logo next year that will be issued by Ikiam only for products made by Muslims.

“The need for another halal logo is to distinguish products that were produced by Muslims against that of non-Muslims besides helping Risda smallholding entrepreneurs and Muslim entrepreneurs make forays into the halal markets locally and abroad,” he was quoted saying by national news agency Bernama.

Zahidi, who is also listed as Ikiam’s chairman on its blog, had said the additional new halal logo on top of Jakim’s existing halal logo would help clear misgivings over the veracity of halal products.

Yesterday, Jakim director-general Tan Sri Othman Mustapha said the proposed new halal logo for Muslim-made products is illegal unless the products are first certified by existing regulatory authorities, noting that the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011 specifies only Jakim, state religious affairs departments and state Islamic religious councils as the competent authorities to issue halal certification.

sos conpius
