Google Play,the new rebranded Android Market

To celebrate the new Google Play, lots of games are on sale

Google yesterday re-branded the Android Market and it is now called Google Play. For those of you with a keen interest in all things Google, you may realize that this name sounds very familiar. That is because it is the same rumored name for the Nexus Tablet apparently in production we recently talked about.

Well to celebrate the launching of Google Play, a bunch of games and applications are on sale for $0.49. The selection is quite good ranging from Dead Space to World of Goo. In fact we have a complete list below of what is on sale:

As you can see the selection is pretty solid. There is one aspect of the sale that is similar to the $0.10 game sale Google previously had where the titles would change out every day. This is called the 7 Days to Play offering which will rotate every day during the sale. The rest of the games, in the list above, should stay the same throughout the sale.

Lawyer: Muslim parents can question ‘illegitimate child’ ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslim parents have the right to challenge the National Registration Department's (NRD) decision not to record the father's name if the child is born less than six months after their marriage, said civil law and syariah law practitioner Nizam Bashir.

“As long as they have been affected, any one of them can challenge the constitutionality of that decision,” he said.

He said the NRD practice contravened Articles 5 and 8 of the Federal Constitution, which gave a child the right to life, privacy, identity to equal treatment under the law and to non-discrimination.

He said this when asked how parents of an “illegitimate” child or the said child could act on the suggestion by Perlis Mufti Dr Juanda Jaya at the “What's in a name” forum on Saturday to challenge the NRD.

“The NRD puts Section 13 (of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act) in the birth certificate of an illegitimate child,” he said yesterday.

“This is discrimination because anyone seeing that reference will know the child is illegitimate.”

Nizam, who was also a panellist at the forum, argued that the fundamental liberties of a person remained supreme regardless of whether he or she were Muslim or not.

There are over 234,000 children who have “no-information” written in the space for their father's name in their birth certificate. Of them, some 85,000 are Muslims.

Asked how a child or mother could pursue such a legal action and maintain their privacy, Nizam said they could apply to the court to use a letter or the name John/Jane Doe.

In 1994, The Star had reported on then High Court Justice Visu Sinnadurai's decision in a case listed as Re M (an infant); Natural Parents vs Adoptive Parents (Mr and Mrs A).

On whether there was legal aid to file such cases, Nizam said the National Legal Aid Foundation only applied to criminal matters but there were some lawyers like himself who would take pro bono cases.

MWC 2012: Sony confirms original content heading to the PlayStation Suite soon

Steve Walker, Sony Mobile's chief marketing officer, took to the stage at Mobile World Congress to discuss the company's Xperia NXT range of smartphones.

Between announcing the Xperia U and Xperia P smartphones, Walker mentioned that owners of PlayStation-certified handsets would soon have access to "content which has been newly created for the PlayStation Suite and PlayStation Store".

"Sony Computer Entertainment has a vision for PlayStation Suite and they will be leveraging their powerful developer relationships to bring original content through the PlayStation Suite initiative. More to come on that," Walker stated.

Since the launch of Xperia Play's PlayStation Pocket app last year, only ten titles have appeared on the service, all of which have been ports of PlayStation games.

But, Walker's comments suggest a renewed commitment to the PlayStation certification programme, which will hopefully translate into a better stocked digital store for owners of PlayStation-certified devices.

Apple accused of exploiting Whitney Houston's death after cost of albums soar on iTunes

Whitney Houston fans have accused Apple of exploiting the late singer's death by increasing the cost of her in-demand albums on iTunes.

Her Ultimate Collection album, released in 2007, has increased by £3 ($4.70) to £7.99 ($12.60), according to Digital Spy.

It comes after the singer, whose most famous hits include I Will Always Love You and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, was found dead in her Los Angeles hotel room on Saturday afternoon at the age of 48.

Sony Reportedly Hard At Work On Cheaper, PS Vita Slim Model

In a surprisingly short amount of time, rumors are already circulating that the newly-released Playstation Vita will receive a slimmer and cheaper redesign. The Vita released just last month in Japan and hasn't even released yet in other regions. However, PSP World (via CVG) claims that Sony PS Vita designer Takashi Sogabe announced work on a new slimmer model of the Vita was already being developed right now.

This comment was actually in regards to what the designer would LIKE to happen, not necessarily what certainly will. He mentions in regards to the original Vita the struggle he had with the engineers on the best design, as well as wishing that the button and analog placement had been different. Mr Sogabe also mentions the original intended model of Vita was actually slimmer than the present one (he even wished it to be made of metal, but that apparently interfered with wireless functions). Given the numerous redesigned rereleases of the original PSP, it seems fairly likely that Sony is already thinking about the future in regards to the Vita. A redesign is not so much a matter of if, but when.

PSP World also mentions the possibility that the Vita will receive a substantial price drop similar to the Nintendo 3DS' recent one. By the 2012 holiday no less. Assuming this is true, slower than expected sales may have contributed to this decision. PSP World speculates however that the redesigned model may also be considerably cheaper than current Vita's price. Vita is scheduled to release in the US on February 22nd. It will be available in two models, one with 3G and one without 3G (wifi only). The 3G model will cost $300, and the wifi only model will be $250. Sony has not formally announced any change in the pricing of the Vita as of yet. And of course this all remains a rumor at this point.

SNK developing new Neo-Geo portable

SNK Playmore is developing a new portable version of its classic Neo-Geo console.

Named the "Neo-Geo Keitai", or "Neo-Geo Portable", the mobile device plays 20 pre-loaded games from the original Neo-Geo's nineties era, Kotaku reports.

The portable boasts a 4.3 inch LCD screen and 2GB of memory, presumably expandable through the included SD card slot.

The games included are World Heroes, Ultimate 11, Top Player's Golf, Sengoku, Nam-1975, Mutation Nation, Last Resort, King of Monsters, Frenzy, Cyber-Lip, Fatal Furty Special, The Art of Fighting, Super Sidekicks, League Bowling, Metal Slug, Magical Lord, Baseball Stars Professional, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters '94, and Fatal Fury.

Photos of the device show A, B, C and D, Menu, Start and two shoulder buttons, plus an AV Out port and a headphone jack.

SNK has yet to formally announce the device, photos of which were posted last night on Japanese gaming blog Famicom-Plaza.

The Neo-Geo was released in Japan and North America in 1991 during the SNES and Mega Drive era. SNK has recently begun re-releasing Neo-Geo titles on the Wii's Virtual Console service, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Apple has won another patent to add to their massive collection of broad general
patents that should never be issued in the first place. Of course this patent takes direct
aim at Android considering what this new one covers in terms of smartphone
functionality.
This new patent Apple has scored essentially covers just about every scenario of using
an sort of application while also making a call. This sort of multi- tasking functionality
has been inside Android since it's beginning, something which Apple had only recently
added yet here we are with Apple being granted a patent for it. Here is the patent in
question:
Patent number #8 ,082, 523 :
1. During a call on a mobile device with a touch screen, with the phone user
interface showing, the users touches either a menu button or an icon.
2. The device replaces the phone interface with a menu of application icons,
including the phone icon.
3. A user’s finger gesture chooses another app.
4. The app’s interface comes up, all the while not dropping the call. The
interface includes a “switch application icon” only when a phone call is
occurring.
5. The user performs a finger gesture on the switch application icon, taking
the user back to the phone interface.
This sort of service should never have been granted a patent in the first place but if
someone is to have a patent for it, it surely shouldn't be Apple who only added this
sort of multi-tasking feature to iOS recently while Android has had it since day 1
basically. This just goes to show how flawed the patent system is here in the US.
So what does this mean for Android? It means manufacturers will have to come up
with another means to pull this sort of function off on Android devices without
infringing on this new patent. While they work on that though you can be sure Apple
will be going after them in the meantime.
This comes on the heels of another victory for Apple against HTC in a patent
infringement lawsuit which could see HTC Android devices banned from the US
next year unless HTC can develop a workaround against that particular patent as well.

Dumped by girlfriend, buy Halo suit

A guy who got dumped by his girlfriend sold off her engagement ring to buy a Halo suit. Very nice!

We've all been through this: you get dumped by your girlfriend, and then you spiral into depression and develop an unhealthy obsession for 'Desperate Housewives'. But for one Eric Smith, he took his heartbreak to a whole new level.

It all started when the 29-year-old decided to go down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend of three years. Unlike most guys, he went all out to have a special ring designed just for her: a canary yellow diamond atop a white gold band. That was, in fact, the girlfriend's ideal wedding ring.

So when it was time to propose, the girlfriend dropped a bombshell: she is leaving him for another guy. When she broke the news to him, he actually had the US$2,000 custom ring in his back pocket. Devastated for months, Smith decided that it was time to move on, so he sold the ring on eBay, contacted an artist and custom-made himself a full-blown Master Chief suit!

The armour, which weighs more than 20kg, is made out of fibreglass and steel, and it requires two people to help him suit up. But that's not the hardest part: the helmet itself, with its glimmering golden visor and bright LED lights, was imported from the Philippines and delivery of the other parts of the suit became a tedious job.

But after wearing the suit for the first time to a convention back in April and to much fanfare, Smith felt that it was time for him to move on. He loves his suit, and the most important thing is; the ladies seem to love it too!

Smith posted on his blog: "There have since been other girls. Chicks dig armour".

And he and his Master Chief suit lived happily ever after.
