USB Expansion Hub

Im wondering if the expansion hubs in the market can actually work when say 4 pendrives are plugged into the hub. I recently bought a typical expansion hub for my notebook and it could only support one port being used and if I plug in another device to the second port, both the device stop working ( I plugged in a mouse and a numeric pad ).

I wonder if there is any expansion hub in the market that could actually offer multiple usb ports which could support the devices plugged into all the ports simultaneously and is there any way to boost the current/power? Are there even hubs that could be self powered or AC powered?

Thank you
