Accesories arent that attractive, but it should work for a simple portable music player

Features and Design

Basically the photo above reveals every controls and sockets available on the Hippo Biscuit
The whole thing is built from metal(not sure which)
It feels its built like a tank, also even if it is whole metal design it doesnt feels heavy at all with justa weight of 30g
People who often go for a jog or gym should find this PMP useful.
The size is small

So here is a small comparison picture of it stack up on my BB Curve 3G
The size isnt space consuming at all. You can put it inside your pocket and forget it was there
On to the features
The PMP have 5 buttons, namely Menu Button(Middle) Forward and Backward, And in the end its the volume up and down button
The controls is pretty simple
The menu button act as a power on/off, pause and play button
Hold the menu button for around 5 sec to turn it on..same action to turn it off.
The button will light up green indicate that it is on and NOT playing any song

When you press the menu button it will start playing a song. The button will blink with green light showing that it is playing
As to fast forward or backward music simply hold the forward or backward button.
To skip the track, just simply press the forward or backward button
Battery life lasted quite long..although i havent discovered any indications showing that it is fully charge or battery running low
I was doing some burn in with my Hippo VB as soon as i got it..I started playing tracks from 12 midnight and it became silent at around 1pm. More than the measured 10 hours.
I dont listen to ear deafening volumes though
Volume can go very high.

Sound Quality
This is my setup

I have the Biscuit burned in around 30 hours now. I'll keep updated after maybe 100 hours of burn in to see if there is any changes
I dont use the VB in the review due to its ear piercing highs, not my cup of tea
Im new to audiophile world. So im dont have a huge PMP collection to compare.

Soundstage improved and so as instrument separation.
The player have no problem revealing details. There are some instruments i havent heard of from my BB or my PC but audible in the Hippo Biscuit
, and there isnt any noise like my BB or my laptop..i havent notice any hiss with any earphone i had (VB,HD381B,and a few other gaming headphones)
Presentation is nice each song started soft then loud
Songs from Celine Dion(My Heart Will Go On) feels more lively and spacious.
Songs from Taylor Swift (Back to December Acoustic specifically) is very enjoyable. There are guitars at the background that i have yet noticed with my previous media players)
Songs from David Archuleta (Touch my Hand) you can hear the piano playing at the background of the track which i never knew it existed
Songs from Steve Aoki (Turbulence) The bass is tight. It doesnt get muddy at all. Unlike my BB makes the bass quite muddy.
The built in frequency response is flat.Nothing seems to be coloured
And unfortunately there is no way to change the equalizer
However this can be easily fixed by having an external amp like the Fiio

Conclusion:
The pros:
Great sound quality for the price
Great built quality
Small in size and light

The cons:
Lack of screen,Hard to navigate through large music collections
No manual included. Needs user to figure out how to function the product

I believed that Jaben have it priced at RM229 retail.Do correct me if i were wrong
At this price people would consider the Hippo Gumstick because it has a screen and a smaller form factor( not to mention FLAC support)
But do consider the built quality of the Biscuit. And as for the FLAC support i guess you can just convert those FLAC tracks to a 16bit and 44100Hz WAV files.
I didn't listen to the gumstick before so i cant guarantee which one would sound better, but the Biscuit is definitely great in term of sound quality

The battery life is quite decent, in fact is quite shocking to me. I have it a straight run from 8am in the morning and it only fainted off at 6pm, a close to 10 hours of battery life is pretty promising. It is the convenience that everyone treasure now, if not everyone will be holding a Hifiman or Ibasso DX100 now... For the screenless issue I don't really care so much, how many people take out their player and change music all the time? I just let it runs by its own normally.

OK, let's skip all the mumbo jumbo and focus on sound quality discussion. I will only use a very basic and affordable setup in most of my test, which is the Beyerdynamic XP3 earphone (RM199) direct from Hippo Biscuit. I ran on a few songs, and had the below conclusion.

Eagles - Hotel California (live version): Ah, the trusty old Hotel California. It not only has nice tunes, but it has various aspect in this music that can be used to assess a strength and weakness of a piece of equipment. XP3 has its good and its bad, while naturally is sounds detail and has good amount of bass, the soundstage are quite limited in iDevices & Android devices. Bass has also some of the extension limit. In Hippo Biscuit, you can immediately feel in the starting, the soundstage becomes larger, it not only has the width but also the depth. It has better separation between the drum and guitar positioning. In the beginning of the track, another distinct difference is the drum slam; it pushes the XP3 to another tier of being deeper, more articulate and better slam. When the singing part starts, it presents in a strong and natural way. Natural as in what you should feel in the concert, you feel the sound 'travels'; you feel airiness, the crowd cheers echoes is blended with the music. As I tried to used back with my iPhone, the whole music changed to a feeling like it is studio recorded, while the crowd cheers seems very fake as it is parallel.

Susan Wong - Fly me to the moon: I picked this song to test on the vocals, the mid, which is the "meat" of music. In this track, you can find another weakness of Beyerdynamic XP3 is it is slightly tends to have a V shape signature, especially in some V shaped players it is more prominent. In R&B, Dance, K-pop etc, it sounded the best and I couldn't find any flaw in these type of songs. However, in Susan Wong of strong vocal type of music, the mids feels a little bit recessed. Fortunately, Hippo Biscuit's neutral nature does smoothened the V shape, making the mid range to be "pulled out" from the tracks. In this song, I feel the Susan Wong is placed further from the position. The vibration of her vocal is clearly heard. I did an easy comparison with my iPhone, you can immediately found that this player does able to produce more "organic" mids.

PSY - Gangnam style -: I promise to put in a Korea K-pop. We cannot deny this song debut has make unbelievable results. It penetrates every corner, every country, which me personally don't understand what the lyric means but it is quite enjoyable and fun to listen. In this song, XP3 has showed its strength; the bass is pronounced accurately, punchy, wonderfully, and what is more, fun to listen due to its good hit and decay. Then you start tapping your feet from start to end. Details of this songs can be heard, you can heard at least some part of the song is actually layered, not totally flat and "electronic", if you know what I mean. While I changed back to my trusty iPhone, the difference is not as big as the previous two songs, but still detectable on the change in the liveliness of the music; I would say it became slightly... boring. I can certainly live on using iPhone listening to this song but I keep switch back to Biscuit due to its fun it provides.

All in all, Hippo Biscuit can be consider quite a promising good, small, easy player, affordable, with excellent music it can churn out. I did tried it with Beyerdynamic DT880pro 250ohm; it still can drive it without and amplifier to have sufficient volume. Imagine that you only have a 250ohm headphone while you don't plan to buy any IEM due to various reasons, this player can be a consideration for you to bring your music around. I won't say it is on par with those Ibasso DX100, or the Hifimans' level, but it sit between, and has various advantages and disadvantages.

Goldring DR-150 custom cable appreciation thread

Hi guys, it has been some time I have posted something that I have so much excitement about.

WHAT IF this gold headphone is mated with blue cable? It will look like below.

(P/S: Goldring DR-150 is not gold It is just a joke) Actually Goldring-150's cable isn't so bad, it is a QED cable.

Every science is born by accident, so do this Frankenstein, blue with gold...? Not so match, but wait, what if the driver and cable matched to a synergy that nobody would believe? A formidable combo?

And here I present you the Vero-150 cable, done by our respected Malaysia cable guru, PCwork. With carefully matched cable, jack selection and with some luck, he managed to born this monster. Let's have a closer look.

Vero-150 made with 6N multicore cooper wire. Material were carefully selected to enhance the sound of goldring DR150 headphone.

Initial listening will have the eye popping effect With dizziness and you feel that your one hand putting on your wallet It is just that good.
Easily amped, it has the neutrality that HD650 + symphonic carries, the soundstage expanded, tremendously, with depth and width. 3D imaging and separation just came in naturally. The whole music is ORGANIC now. Bass hits deeper, treble extend smoothly.

For all the goodies it has, some would think it will be priced at the ceiling. The good news is... It is AFFORDABLE. Hooray...
