my dad's friend got a new Merc E class. but he rarely uses that car, because my friend said his dad doesnt have enough money to fill up the car's petrol tank.

Police release all 34 arrested over ISA vigil

PETALING JAYA: Police have released all 34 arrested for attending candlelight vigils in S’gor, Penang to mark Sunday’s 50th anniversary of the Internal Security Act (ISA).

The four in Penang were released just after midnight while, the 30 in Selangor were released later Monday.

In Selangor, 30 people, including eight women, were arrested and brought to the police headquarters here for questioning on Sunday.

Among those detained Sunday night were Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

Those participating in the vigil had earlier gathered at the entrance of Amcorp Mall at about 7pm on Sunday and were moving towards Dataran MBPJ, Padang Timur, when they were stopped by police, including OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed.

After the group refused to budge despite being told to disperse, Federal Reserve Unit and light strike force personnel started moving in.

The people then started singing “Negaraku” and shouted “Mansuh, mansuh, mansuhkan ISA!” before a scuffle broke out.

As the group headed towards the back of the shopping mall, police formed a barricade outside its main entrance.

The group later tried to come out from the mall but were prevented from doing so by the police.

Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam said its presence during the vigil was to ensure there was no abuse by police.

Earlier Sunday, Syed Ibrahim claimed that the group had been given permission to gather at the field by the Petaling Jaya City Council.

However, ACP Arjunaidi said the council did not have the authority to do so.

“We stopped them, so they went back into the mall. After a while, they marched back out and we had no choice but to take action. They were challenging us,” ACP Arjunaidi told reporters.

The group later dispersed at around 9.10pm Sunday.

In Penang, four people were arrested while participating in the vigil held at Speaker’s Square in Esplanade, which started at around 8.40pm.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar had earlier warned the organisers not to proceed with the vigil.

KOTA BARU: A total of 92% of Chinese students who excelled in the SPM and STPM secured a place in public universities, MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said.

Dr Ng, who is also Tourism Minister, added that the figure was higher than the corres ponding year’s of about 80%.

“The MCA has done this on the quiet to champion the rights of the students unlike the opposition who would rather make noise and do nothing,

“The students were offered competitive courses in line with their excellent results,” Dr Ng said in her speech at the Kelantan MCA annual general meeting.

The meeting was opened by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and attended by MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha and Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Ng added that the party’s effort had silenced the critics, especially the opposition, who brought up the issue every year.

“This is part of the MCA’s effort to develop the nation and to address problems faced by the Chinese community including in the economy, poverty eradication, scholarships and others,’’ she said.
