Life without subsidies:The Australian experience

Life without subsidies: the Australian experience
News 2013-10-03 15:24
By Wan Shahara Ahmad Ghazali

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- "What, one ringgit?" asked the much surprised Dr Mariya Yahya, 29, on the treatment cost for her mother at the 1Malaysia Clinic.

As for Dr Mariya, who has been living and working in Australia since the age of 18, the token payment at the government run facility is hard to believe.

"Just imagine a senior citizen with three medical conditions, just completed treatment at the public hospital and returned home with numerous medications without paying a single sen," says the dentist who is well aware on the actual cost of treatment and medication.

Compare this with the private hospitals anywhere where the same treatment will cost you hundreds of ringgit, excluding the medications and lab charges that are much higher, she adds.

However, Malaysians are a lucky lot as since Merdeka the poor, the middle class and even the rich have been enjoying subsidised public healthcare and often with minimum payment.

This is a stark contrast with Australia, and many other nations, where managing with the cost of living can be challenging.

The Australian experience

Unlike in Malaysia, Australia only allows those who qualify namely the concession card holders to enjoy the public hospital facilities.

The concession cards are reserved for students, the elderly, the unemployed, the disabled and those earning below AUS$ 30,000 (RM90,500) annually.

"Moreover, the public hospitals only provide the prescriptions where the patient has to buy the medication at the pharmacy and there is no such thing as free medication," she explains.

And those who can afford have to go to the private hospitals.

High cost of living

Dr Mariya who works in Adelaide notes that unlike Malaysia, the cost of living in Australia is high.

She and her husband have been working hard to cover their living expense and they also have a son with special needs to take care off.

"As our child was born there, the child is entitled for welfare services that is easily available at the state (South Australia) where we are living," she said explaining that services include speech therapy, physiotherapy, child counselling, etc.

Yet, the high income tax imposed on the citizens up to 46 percent of one's taxable income is a bane and this is why she and many other workers in the middle class bracket feel depressed.

This is in addition to the various annual mandatory fees like the health insurance and employment insurance, licences including occupational licences, school fees, etc.

"Those earning below $30,000 are exempted from taxes and even business tycoons have leeway to escape from hefty taxes through corporate social responsibilities, including by organising lucky dips and handing out donations," she said.

The professionals living in Australia are subjected to heavy taxes, which in turn is used to care for the drug addicts, the unemployed and single mothers.

She points out while the policy of helping these people is considered good, it has been abused as well with unwed students getting pregnant to enjoy the benefits or the unemployed staying unemployed.

Without subsidy

Travelling in Australia is costly too. Unlike in Malaysia where the government has provided heavy subsidies to reduce the cost of living, there is no such thing as fuel, water and electric subsidy in Australia.

Private vehicle users have to pay about AUS$1.59 (RM4.80) for a litre of petrol, and at petrol stations in the outskirts one has to pay according to the current market price.

While in Malaysia the drivers with traffic summonses can expect a discount if they pay early, this is not possible down under.

In fact, they have a demerit point system with the driving licence suspended upon reaching certain points.

"This is probably the reason why Australian drivers are very disciplined on the roads and the number of vehicles on the road too is less added with a highly efficient bus system," she adds.

As for public transportation, those without the concession card have to fork out between AUS$4-5 (RM12-RM15) per ticket for a two hour ride on any bus.

High service charges

Though one can expect good quality services there, it costs AUS$80 (RM241) per day to send your child to the child care centre while the public school fees are about AUS$250 (RM754) per year.

The basic services too are costly, as for example a hair cut will cost around AUS$30 (RM90.50), says Dr Mariya, adding that for the same value here one can not only have a hair cut and hair wash but also a head massage.

"If one is to eat out, be ready to pay AUS$3.50 (RM9) for the cheapest cup of coffee, and from here you will know how much you have to pay for a full menu," she illustrates further.

Many may think that the grass is greener at the other side, but there is also the high cost of living in Australia that one has to consider.

As for Mariya, Malaysians should count on their blessings as the country provides all that they need regardless one is poor or rich, though they may be shortcomings.

But Malaysians too have to face the reality that they cannot be carrying on with a subsidised life forever.

apa pendapat /k/?

I read in The Edge, analysts said this stock is undervalued by more than $1 over its current price. However, there are some cause of concern on its Property division, since there are lots of developers around as said by its Exec Director. However they hold a lot of rights to fashion brands such as Topshop/Topman, Uniqlo, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, etc. Wing Tai Malaysia Bhd Retail Division
how good is this stock? anyone can tell?

reliable list of taxi drivers wanted

hi LYNers, im starting this thread as i need some help to get some reliable taxi drivers contacts for travel around Klang Valley/KLIA/LCCT. So if LYNers are kind enough to provide some good taxi driver contacts, this will be a big favour to me as well as many others out there. No doube there is a lot of taxi around us but most of them dont use meter and simply quote a high price. my worst experience was the taxi driver taking advantage of the rain season, usually it only cost rm5 to travel to this location but due to rainy season this taxi driver charge rm5 /person.there are 3 person in the taxi!
Thanks

Lim Chee Guan in KL or just imitation?

Hey there LYNers, just want to ask you all.You all know Lim Chee Guan right? The famous Singapore bak kwa brand? Yesterday, I passed by a bak kwa shop in Maluri area and was surprised that it looks like a Lim Chee Guan shop with its aeroplane logo. So just for a confirmation is it the original Lim Chee Guan shop from Singapore or its just an imitation shop?
