KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Julai — Semakin menonjol dalam aktiviti kemasyarakatan, Marina Ibrahim enggan menjadikan DAP batu loncatan bergelar wakil rakyat.

Setiausaha publisiti Wanita DAP Johor berkata penyertaannya dalam politik bertunjangkan keikhlasan demi agenda pembangunan rakyat.

“Saya buat kerja bukan untuk menjadi ‘seseorang’ atau calon. Saya bukan sesiapa dalam DAP. Saya bekerja sebab minat dan mahu membantu orang lain.

“Kalau letak harapan dan buat kerja mahu menjadi calon, itu tidak ikhlas dan sampai bila boleh bertahan?

“Ramai saja anak muda dalam DAP dan tidak menjadi calon. Itu hanya persepsi orang,” katanya kepada ProjekMM.

Marina Ibrahim enggan menjadikan DAP batu loncatan bergelar wakil rakyat.

Siapa sangka walau memilih DAP sebagai wadah perjuangan, Marina, 33, pernah dua tahun bersekolah menengah agama di Johor.

Katanya, tanggapan salah yang diterapkan membuatkan mahasiswa Universiti Terbuka Malaysia memilih jalan keluar.

“Saya pernah bersekolah di Madrasah Arabiah Kluang dari tingkatan 1 hingga tingkatan 2. Selepas itu saya pindah ke sekolah biasa.

“Sejak zaman sekolah saya bukan seseorang yang percayakan benda tidak tentu arah. Ada perkara tertentu yang saya tidak boleh terima.

“Contohnya di madrasah, undang-undang sangat ketat seperti tidak boleh bercakap dengan lelaki atau lelaki lalu, kita kena tutup tingkap.

“Sebatang pen jatuh pun, budak lelaki tidak boleh beri kepada budak perempuan. Bila kita fikir, kenapa kita hendak tekankan begitu sedangkan Islam tidak begitu.

“Bila kita bekerja, kita boleh ada teman wanita dan lelaki asalkan kita tahu batasan yang ada. Jadi kenapa perlu buat begitu. Saya tidak boleh terima hal itu,” katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) has called upon the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council for a meeting to discuss Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) chief Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal’s nomination as the opposition’s prime minister candidate.

In a press statement today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that Shafie’s nomination by Langkawi MP and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was “historical”.

“The CEC took note that this nomination is historical because it involves a leader from east Malaysia to be considered for the very first time.

“After taking in views from other CEC leaders, the meeting has decided that this decision must be made at the next Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting,” said Lim.

He stressed that PH’s position must be strengthened and that all coalition parties must remain committed in their decision to take down the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration.

Lim added that it is critical that this matter is raised at the meeting before the next Parliamentary meeting on July 13.

Previously, PKR has proposed its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the PM role and nominated Dr Mahathir’s son, Jerlun MP Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as deputy prime minister.

A Bersatu splinter group, however, proposed Dr Mahathir to return as PM and Anwar as his second.

Both of the strong-willed leaders who had already had bad blood between them in the past had rejected the other’s proposal, leading to Dr Mahathir endorsing Sabah Chief Minister and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal as an alternative PM candidate.

Earlier today, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has agreed to bring the issue on the opposition’s prime minister candidate to the PH presidential council soon for a joint decision.

Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said this was decided at the Amanah National Leadership Committee meeting today to discuss the nomination of Warisan president Mohd Shafie as the opposition’s candidate for the post of prime minister.

“After considering the views of all members at the meeting, Amanah decided that this matter should be decided jointly in the PH presidential council for the sake of consensus and togetherness in tackling this question.

“The meeting stressed that the question of recapturing the government should be given priority,” he in a statement here.

Tindakan nelayan Indonesia menyelamatkan hampir 100 pelarian Rohingya yang terkandas di perairan negara itu semalam memberikan mesej yang besar terhadap pemimpin Asean, kata Anggota Parlimen Klang, Charles Santiago.

Beliau yang memuji langkah nelayan itu berkata ia memberi pengajaran bahawa nyawa setiap individu adalah penting terutamanya dalam keadaan dunia berdepan wabak Covid-19.

“Saya rasa mereka memberikan mesej yang besar kepada pemimpin-pemimpin Asean mengenai konsep belas kasihan, melindungi mereka yang dalam kesulitan.

“Terutamanya apabila orang biasa atau komuniti yang turut terjejas (dengan Covid-19) membantu pelarian Rohingya yang melarikan diri dari penghapusan etnik, daripada semua jenis keganasan sama ada mereka di Bangladesh atau di negeri Rakhine, Myanmar,” kata Charles dalam sidang media digital bertajuk Kemuncak Sidang Asean ke-36: Melindungi hak asasi manusia dan demokrasi ketika wabak Covid-19 hari ini.

Semalam, dilaporkan pelarian Rohingya yang terdiri daripada lelaki, wanita dan kanak-kanak diselamatkan oleh nelayan Indonesia selepas pihak berkuasa enggan membantu memberikan mereka tempat perlindungan kerana bimbang jangkitan Covid-19.

Charles (gambar atas) berkata, dalam berdepan dengan krisis, agenda utama dalam Sidang Kemuncak Asean ke-36 yang berlangsung esok sepatutnya menumpukan kepada komuniti yang terjejas seperti pelarian Rohingya, di mana pemimpin Asean tidak mampu bertindak balas terhadap mereka.

Katanya, ketika satu dunia berdepan Covid-19, negara-negara Asean sewajarnya meletakkan sikap belas kasihan sebagai keutamaan, sama ada terhadap mereka yang berada di darat atau di perairan.

“Saya rasa ia juga mencerminkan bahawa Asean tidak melakukan yang secukupnya dalam isu Rohingya di negeri Rakhine.

“Terdapat banyak mesyuarat dan persidangan (membincangkan isu Rohingya) tetapi jalan penyelesaian yang konkrit bagi menyelesaikan isu ini,” katanya.

Sediakan harga vaksin berpatutan

Charles turut membangkitkan isu hak asasi manusia berkaitan akses kepada kesihatan, dengan menyarankan supaya pemimpin di negara Asean menggesa syarikat farmasi besar (big pharma) supaya tidak meletakkan harga yang sangat mahal apabila vaksin Covid-19 ditemui.

Beliau turut memberi contoh bagaimana kerajaan Malaysia sebelum ini memberikan akses perubatan dengan kos yang lebih rendah berbanding kos sebenar untuk merawat penyakit Hepatitis C.

“Jadi, apa yang saya cuba sampaikan kepada menteri-menteri supaya esok mereka mesti menegaskan kepada komuniti global terutama kepada farmasi besar (big pharma) yang (harga) ubat-ubatan dan vaksin perlu berpatutan,” katanya.

Katanya, kerajaan di negara Asean juga perlu memastikan ia boleh didapati oleh mereka yang terjejas dan perlu memberikan secara percuma kepada golongan miskin.

“Ia sangat penting kerana virus ini memberi kesan kepada golongan miskin dan kaya. Tetapi malangnya penjarakan sosial tidak dapat diamalkan di rumah-rumah kecil. Ia mustahil.

“(Contohnya seperti) pekerja warga asing di Malaysia berkongsi di dalam sebuah rumah kecil bersama 30 orang dan mustahil mereka dapat amalkan penjarakan sosial,” katanya.

Gesa Myanmar kembalikan akses internet Rakhine

Timbalan Pengarah Asia bagi Human Rights Watch, Phil Robertson yang turut menyertai sidang media digital itu berkata antara perkara paling kritikal yang negara Asean perlu lakukan adalah memberitahu kerajaan Myanmar supaya mengembalikan semula akses internet di Rakhine.

Menurut Robertson, tindakan kerajaan Myanmar itu bukan sahaja menambah kesulitan mereka (penduduk Rakhine) mendapatkan maklumat tentang Covid-19, tetapi mereka membuatkan pihak bantuan kemanusian sukar beroperasi bagi menyampaikan bantuan.

“Apabila anda cakap mengenai komuniti di negeri Rakhine, mereka tidak tahu pun tentang pandemik Covid-19 sedang berlaku kerana mereka disekat daripada mendapatkan maklumat di kawasan terpencil, itu adalah masalah hak asasi manusia.

“Semua orang berhak mendapat akses kepada maklumat, berhak tahu apa yang terjadi. Dan tindakan kerajaan (Myanmar) memutuskan rangkaian internet membuatkan mereka berada dalam kegelapan, atas apa alasan jua mengapa tindakan tersebut diambil,” katanya.

Kerajaan Myanmar menutup data mudah alih di beberapa penempatan di seluruh negeri Rakhine dan negeri jiran Chin sejak 21 Jun tahun lalu, sehingga menyebabkan penduduk di situ disekat daripada mendapat sebarang maklumat terkini.

Untuk rekod, sekatan internet itu memasuki tahun kedua dan penduduk tempatan telah merayu supaya ia ditamatkan dengan segera ketika wabak Covid-19 menyerang.

“Jadi ini adalah perkara yang negara Asean perlu utarakan kepada Myanmar.

“Mereka (pemimpin Asean lain) perlu mengutarakan beberapa isu utama yang mereka boleh ajukan dan tekankan kerana Myanmar mempunyai rekod hak asasi manusia yang sangat teruk.

Sidang Kemuncak Asean ke-36 yang akan berlangsung esok diadakan secara maya di mana pemimpin-pemimpin Asean akan bersidang melalui persidangan video bagi membincangkan isu-isu serantau dan pasca Covid-19.

Malaysia akan diketuai oleh Perdana Menteri, Muhyiddin Yassin. Manakala sidang tersebut akan dipengerusikan Perdana Menteri Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc yang juga Pengerusi Asean 2020.

Let me start by saying that ever since our inception, DAP’s raison d’être has been to fight for the people of Malaysia. For 54 years, the struggle of DAP has been for the collective well-being of Malaysians and not for the ambitions of any single individual. DAP’s commitment to a better Malaysia has always been our priority and will continue to be our priority.

World Refugees Day – Every Action Counts

This year’s World Refugee Day is marked by an unprecedented health and economic crisis. which has tested our strength as a human race and highlighted systematic inequalities.

Refugees are among the most vulnerable people in this world that have fled their homes and country to avoid a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, social affiliations or political opinion.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as of February 2020, there are some 178,990 refugees and asylum seekers registered with the agency in Malaysia – the majority are from Myanmar, comprising some 101,010 Rohingya.

In the time of Covid, while we grapple with new realities, we must safeguard our humanity. We cannot let people die at sea or punish them for leaving their homes to seek refuge on our soils.

At the same time, we must act firmly and put pressure on governments that have failed to protect their own people and forced them to flee. Let us not forget our principles, about helping those in need. Everyone of us can make a difference. Every action counts.

Sambutan Hari Pelarian Sedunia hari ini ditandai dengan kemelut ekonomi dan kesihatan yang membawa dampak yang cukup besar kepada kita. Ia ternyata menguji tahap kesiapsiagaan kita dalam mendepaninya, dan juga memaksa kita untuk memberi perhatian yang serius kepada masalah jurang yang sistemik.

Pelarian ditafsirkan sebagai gerombolan manusia yang lari meninggalkan tanah air bagi mengelak ancaman dari dianiaya atas beberapa faktor, samada kaum, agama, warganegara, pertalian sosial mahupun pendirian politik.

Menurut UNHCR setakat bulan Februari 2020, terdapat kira-kira 178,990 orang pelarian dan pencari suaka yang berdaftar dengan badan itu di Malaysia. Dan majoritinya adalah dari kalangan warganegara Myanmar yang terdiri dari 101,010 orang etnik Rohingya.

Meski kita masih cuba menyesuaikan diri di kala norma baru hari ini, kita mesti terus memperteguh sifat kemanusiaan. Kita tidak harus membiarkan mereka tewas di laut besar, atau menghukum mereka kerana mencari perlindungan di sini.

Dalam masa yang sama, kita harus bertindak tegas dan terus memberi tekanan kepada kerajaan-kerajaan yang gagal melindungi rakyat mereka sehingga memaksa mereka untuk lari tinggalkan negara masing-masing. Usah kita gadaikan prinsip kita dalam melindungi mereka yang tertindas dan dalam kesusahan. Saya yakin setiap seorang dari kita mampu untuk membuat kelainan.

Why the government so slow and tardy in presenting a comprehensive package to rescue SMEs in the Covid-19 pandemic economics when compared to other countries like United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, Australia and Singapore?

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) statement yesterday calling on Putrajaya to ensure that workers’ interests are protected as part of a pivotal condition for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to obtain government assistance raises the question why the government is so slow and tardy in presenting a comprehensive package to rescue SMEs in the Covid-19 pandemic economics when compared to other countries like United Kingdom, Germany, France, Denmark, Australia and Singapore?

It could be argued that in these extraordinary times of the Covid-19 pandemic when there is a virtual lock-down of economic activities, the failure to quickly and nimbly address medical and economic problems is a form of irresponsibility and negligence, which is why there is talk of impeachment proceedings against the US President Donald Trump for his mishandling of the Covid-19 crisis in his country.

TAN Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) is known as a no-drama politician and he passed his first month as Prime Minister without much drama.

In fact, by most accounts, he has done quite well given that he came in amid a health pandemic as well as accusations of leading a backdoor government.

Muhyiddin has been a steady pair of hands in tackling the Covid-19 crisis and his government’s stimulus package was well-received by the common folk despite rumblings from the business sector.

Sources say cabinet meeting is smoother comparing with PH cabinet meeting.

If done right, the covid-19 crisis can give advantage to Muhyidin.

Kerajaan Perikatan Nasional (PN) pimpinan Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin dituntut agar bekerja bermati-matian bagi membantu rakyat melawan Covid-19 selepas bermati-matian merebut untuk menjadi kerajaan.

Ketua Umum Pakatan Harapan (PH), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim berkata, perkara itu perlu dilakukan oleh semua pemimpin kerajaan PN kerana rakyat berhak kepadanya.

Mahathir says opposition lacks votes to oust Malaysian leader Muhyiddin Yassin

KUALA LUMPUR (BLOOMBERG) - Former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad warned that the opposition coalition may lack the support needed to remove the current government while criticising his long-time rival, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for the collapse of his administration.

The Pakatan Harapan alliance, which was ousted from power last month, now had the backing of about 108 lawmakers, from 114 the morning before Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was inaugurated, Tun Dr Mahathir said in a Bloomberg Television interview with Haslinda Amin. Earlier he had called for an immediate confidence vote once Parliament reconvenes, which is now scheduled for May 18.

Dr Mahathir's government collapsed in part due to tensions over whether he would honour a promise made during the 2018 election campaign to hand power to Mr Anwar, who has long waited to take power.

"He has always been campaigning to get me to resign earlier," Dr Mahathir said of Mr Anwar. "His boys even say nasty things about me. You know some of them are quite violent in their choice of words."

Dr Mahathir is Malaysia's longest-serving leader, having served as prime minister for about a quarter-century in two stints.

Dr M mahu pertahan jawatan pengerusi Bersatu

Dr Mahathir Mohamad akan mempertahankan jawatan sebagai pengerusi Bersatu.

Bekas perdana menteri itu menghantar borang pencalonan bagi mempertahankan jawatan tertinggi parti itu melalui Ketua Bahagian Bersatu Selayang, Zulkifli Mohamad di ibu pejabat Bersatu di Menara Yayasan Selangor, Petaling Jaya hari ini.

Borang itu diserahkan pada kira-kira jam 1.40 tengah hari tadi.

Sementara itu, Muhyiddin Yassin hari ini menyerahkan borang pencalonan untuk mempertahankan jawatan presiden melalui setiausaha politiknya.

Perkembangan ini dilihat akan mengakhiri desas-desus yang menyatakan Muhyiddin mungkin bertanding bagi jawatan yang disandang Mahathir.

Pergeseran dua pemimpin Bersatu itu ekoran 'Langkah Sheraton' bulan lalu, yang menyaksikan Mahathir meletakkan jawatan sebagai perdana menteri, sementara Muhyiddin mengumumkan Bersatu keluar Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Muhyiddin seterusnya diangkat sebagai perdana menteri kelapan menerajui kerajaan Perikatan Nasional (PN) yang terdiri daripada Bersatu BN, PAS dan GPS.

‘Mukhriz has a month to accept Perikatan offer’

ALOR SETAR: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (pic) has been given a month to consider an offer to join Perikatan Nasional and keep his position, according to sources.

Perikatan insiders revealed that Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia after being sacked from PKR, had been given the task of persuading Mukhriz while Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin worked to reconcile with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the federal level.

A source said while Kedah remains a Pakatan Harapan-ruled state for now, a change of government was inevitable “with or without Mukhriz”.

“If Mukhriz cannot be lured to our side, the change will happen anyway with all five Bersatu and three PKR reps crossing over to Perikatan.”

It was understood that whatever decision on Kedah will be based on how Dr Mahathir responds to Muhyiddin’s attempts to coax the elder statesman back into being on good terms.

The Prime Minister has sent a letter to Dr Mahathir expressing his desire to mend their strained ties.

Mukhriz, Bersatu Armada chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and party secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya are among the notable leaders who are against Muhyiddin.

Meanwhile, Kedah Pakatan chairman Datuk Johari Abdul has reiterated his commitment to the current state government.

He had made it clear that he was committed to the coalition and supported Mukhriz as mentri besar.

He dismissed talk about him crossing over to form a state government with Perikatan.

Kedahans have been hearing talk about a new deal being brokered between Johari and Perikatan through negotiation with PAS.

Kedah PAS has denied that such a meeting ever took place.

KUALA LUMPUR: Presiden MCA Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong berkata walaupun parti itu keanggotaannya adalah Cina tetapi pendekatannya adalah untuk semua rakyat Malaysia.

“Saya mahu beritahu, MCA walaupun keanggotaan kita adalah Cina tetapi pendekatan kita adalah untuk semua rakyat Malaysia,” katanya dalam wawancara dengan Sinar Harian.

“Kita tidak boleh mengagung-agungkan kehendak kita sahaja, biarlah berdasarkan perlembagaan dan konsep kesederhanaan serta kepelbagaian” katanya lagi.

“Saya sejak kecil di kampung saya lebih selesa berbahasa Melayu. Sebab itu ramai kata Wee Ka Siong, kamu ini macam belajar di sekolah kebangsaan, tetapi saya daripada sekolah Cina. Tapi macam mana saya belajar, saya masuk rumah orang Melayu, belajar macam mana nak buat pantun dan puisi,” jelas Ka Siong yang juga Menteri Pengangkutan.

“Saya selalu masuk pertandingan perbahasan di sekolah dan saya tanya kawan-kawan Melayu, mereka tolong saya. Malahan saya dulu ada kumpulan belajar kaum Melayu datang rumah saya belajar,” katanya menjelaskan bagaimana beliau dapat menguasai bahasa Malaysia dengan baik.
