I have two unit of STAX SR-001 MK2 in hand. One fully modded and another in stock configuration.

I am head over heels with this STAX and loving the sound so much. It was unfortunate that I was unable to bring the STAX unit for the last TT session but this time I think I am setting up a mini meet this weekend for those interested to try.

Location will be somewhere between Batu Caves and Wangsa Maju.

Please reply to this thread if anybody is interested.

Location: Petronas/Burger King just before Karak Highway entrance
Date/Time: Saturday 9PM

Forgive me if I am flooding this thread with pics.

Decidedly, I took all photos with available light because I could not afford a Flash Gun yet (already spent too much getting the body and lens).

All pics has been resized and the only adjustment did was to sharpen them after resize (loss of sharpness when resized)

Color wise all remained untouched and I agree some of the are underexposed, how I wish I have EX580 II with me...

All taken without Flash. Apertures f5.6 mainly with some f8 & f4. Shutter speed as low as 1/10 ISO800. Handheld (Thanks IS!)

As usual, critics are greatly welcomed.
ETYMOTIC ER-4 VS iM716

A fellow forummer (walabies) was kind enough to lend me his iM716 - it was sent to me for "podectomy" conversion to have that cumbersome pod removed and replaced with a dedicated resistors pod a la ER-4P.

The comparo was done exclusively driven off my RWA iMod 5.5G + SuperMicro-IV + 100% ALAC. And to ensure that I am hearing them right, both uses the stock Ety Black Foamies (I prefer stock Ety foamies over anything else)

During this extended period of loan, I have had the opportunity to compare iM716 with my treasured ER-4S. Most of my impressions are done after the podectomy has been completed and that iM716 right now runs on 41 oHm total resistance measured at the plug. My ER-4S has a steady impedance of 99.

When I first received the iM716, I tried the HD and Bass mode respectively. Of course immediately I developed a dislike for bass mode because to an Ety junkie, it's akin to pouring mud into the sound spectrum. But HD mode in the other hand is distinctively Ety House Sound - BUT there's a catch. Unlike the Ety sound that I knew all too well, iM716 offers warmer mids throughout the spectrum. I would describe iM716 mids as "Gradoey". In contrast, this warmth has actually taken off a tiny bit of transparency which ER-4S is revered for. Don't get me wrong, iM716 surpassed most cans that I ever listened to when it comes to transparency, way more transparent than moderately amped Sennheiser HD580, 600 and perhaps on par with HD650. On the other hand, ER-4S transparency is on the top there comparable to BeyerDynamic DT990 (250 oHm) and Audio Technica ATH-W5000. So you get the picture.

On highs, audibly the iM716 fell short (just by a hair or two) to my ER-4S. There's two way to look at this, while I dearly loved my ER-4S for the stellar highs, I am also irritated by the sibilance I get when listening to poorly recorded/mastered CDs - sometimes it's too much, gosh how I hate those recording people for tweaking the treble waay beyond the norm - this example can be found in Interpol's "Our Love To Admire", TEXAS' "Red Book", Garbage's "Bleed Like me", The Jesus & Mary Chain's "Honey's Dead" and a few other. But on good recordings from Diana Krall, KRAFTWERK, Ride, Morrissey, The Clash etc, ER-4S is one hell of very hard can to beat when it comes to highs, personally I think only Beyer DT990 and ATH-W5000 could match ER-4S treble prowess (amped from the same source). Where iM716 fell short on highs, it became a blessing in disguise for the very same sibilant songs stated above - the warmth did a lot to alleviate the piercings. Expectedly the decays will not be as apparent as ER-4S decays.

Bass. After the mod, iM716 stayed true to Ety bass signature - tight and deep. Here I could not authoratively declare which bass response I prefer more - the warm bottom of iM716 or the tight slick rear end of my ER-4S .Since both are driven by SuperMicro-IV + 5.5G iMod, bass no longer becomes a problem or lacking in Ety perspective. I wish I could give both a listen through an unamped source but I don't have any other DAP worthy enough to drive both (how I wish my dead Rio Karmas :stoic:). Honestly, I am quite entertained by the bass responses of both, notably iM716 trully excel with Indie, Rock, Hip-Hop (I listened to Dalek) and ER-4S shines with Britpop, Jazz, Electronica, Shoegazer and Synthpop. But surely on both bass goes deep, tight and possessed strong authority.

Notably, ER-4S has better speed overall. This is expected. Speed and PRAT is one of the primary reason I loved ER-4 so much, perhaps only an Electrostatic and ATH-W5000 is faster. iM716 has that speed, just not as fast as ER-4S.

Head staging is dead identical on both. So is the separation prowess. With a good source and amp, these babies will make jaw drops with the knife edged precision in those areas (separation)

And oh, it has to be mentioned that iM716 will take more juice to drive. Compared to ER-4P, the drivability difference is almost like night and day. An iM716 with 41 oHm of resistance will need the same amount of juice to power a 99 oHm ER-4S - interesting yes?

My conclusion:
I am VERY impressed with iM716. Despite the shortcomings stated above (which is nitpicking actually), I will not complain if I were to own an iM716 (modded of course) alone. It has that Ety embodiment that will satisfy any Ety fan seeking warm presentation. Just like an Ety, there's no flabbiness or veil hindering the sound. In fact I find myself enjoying iM716 a lot with my Metal and Industrial tracks. I am seriously considering a purchase of iM716 for myself as the choice IEM for that type of music

And please, remember that this is my impression, take it as you may. One man's honey is another man's poison.
Little DOT Micro+ Impressions

I am putting this up to express my appreciation on LDM+ and to say thanks to Yeah Guyz for bringing it in to Malaysia. As we all know it was not an easy affair for Yeah Guyz to get those 10MOQ, securing orders, logistic hassle and customs dealing - you did us a lot of favour and we can only express our thanks for it.

Equipment used:
Headphone - Alessandro Music Series 1 (heavily modded MS-1)
Earphone - JDM Panasonic RP-HJE50 32Ohm (heavily modded)
Interconnect - Custom Canare StarQuad
DAP Source - Creative Labs ZEN Neeon 5GB (firmware 1.011)
Music Source - Near Lossless LAME VBR-New V0 Q0
Comparison: CMOY OPA2134PA
* FLAT Equalizers *

At this stage my LDM+ has been running non-stop for almost 12hours. I would not expect it to perform well before running in for at least 50 hours but already my CMOY is getting quite a beating almost in all area. It did sound a bit edgy in the first 8 hours - but then again this is expected.

High Frequencies Control/Decays:
This is where LDM+ reigned supreme. Despite the size the LDM+ high frequency output is simply mind boggling. Treble is fluidly presented with very little hint of sibilance. I would expect after over 50 hours the sibilance will be totally gone. Highs are deeply extended and this resulted in sweet decays in cymbals, bells and most percussion instruments, previously only 70% of these are audible with the CMOY Overall presentation can be defined as cold, but not on the negative side. Guitars "twang" and Synthesizers Roll Off is faithfully reproduced and did not sound artificial at all. The major improvement is highs control that prevented any sound from going over the board

Articulation/Resolution:
LDM+ is a master of articulation, MS-1 is already an articulate headphone among most Grados (within the same league of SR225 but slightly tamed). Combined with LDM+, it's a few step up which resulted in sterile and non glaring resolution. So much so that if a bad source like an MP3 that contained some minor clipping, the artifacts will be heard audibly. But for as long as a clean source is fed through it, LDM+ will spill it out clean. I am using my LDM+ now for monitoring of badly ripped WAV files from scratchy CDs.

Separation/Spatial/Soundstage:
Another major improvement from CMOY is instrument separation. LDM+ exhibit superb control over each instrument and no matter how peaky the songs get, it will not sound congested at all. This is even more evident with percussions and strings (guitars). However LDM+ does little to improve Soundstage and Spatialization, MS-1 being a Grado will always suffer from limited sized Soundstage just hovering around the shoulder. But this is compensated by Grado's Dynamic Airyness and in fact with LDM+ it's trully a 3D experience. I can clearly discern drums behind my shoulders, cymbals somewhere at top corners, guitars rotating seamlessly according to songs, bass rumbling where it should be. Most importantly vocals remained centered and focused - not overly, slightly laid back by Grado & KOSS standard

Midrange:
If you are heavily focused on vocals and mids, you will be slightly dissapointed with the laid back presentation. But some may find this appealing because rather than having the singer singing in your face it will be like listening to them 5 feet away. Drum thumps sounded just right - not emphasized nor reduced.

Speed
Excellent speed! even a 9V CMOY sounded slow compared to this 3.7V LDM+. Speed played vital roles in getting the whole spectrum to move in liquid motion

BASS/SLAM
Some LDM+ did complained that bass seemed to be "reduced". I did not find this to be the case. LDM+ introduced a very tight controll over bass in all frequencies. There's no chance for bass to get boomy of flabby. On tracks that have continous bass attack and sweep, bass remained strong and punchy, while on tracks that does not emphasize bass, it remained reserved as it should be. Grado signature slam and punches remained solid

Tone/Timbre:
Overall tonality is cold. This is not a warm amp at all unlike those tubes and OPA2134/2132/2227 OpAmps. But tone/timbre remained whole bodied and not tubby sounding at all

I could write more on this wonder, but I would not want to waste your time going through all of them. Listening is believing and I am glad that I made the choice to get this LDM+ from Yeah Guyz.

If I have to pick flawed points in LDM+, it has to be the relatively strong input required from the source. Compared to CMOY, I only have to put up 31/40 of volume on the headphone out. The LDM+ require 36/40 to scale up to the CMOY. But then quantity does not constitute quality - I can live with that.

And the SIZE! this has to be one of the thinnest and smallest amp available today beside XIN's SuperMicro & SuperMini. It's actually smaller than a credit card
