BlackBerry Torch 9850 review (Verizon)

RIM didn’t envision creating a touch device. Yet here we are in 2011 with the company abandoning it’s prior failed attempts at making a touch-only smartphone, and instead copying the competition instead of innovating. The BlackBerry Torch 9850 is a no-frills touch phone. There’s no SurePress display, thankfully — just a regular capacitive screen. The device features a 1.2GHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of built-in storage, and more. Does it stand a chance at competing with the iPhone and Android devices, though? Read on for my review.

The BlackBerry Torch 9850 features specs that mirror the fantastic BlackBerry Bold 9900 pretty closely — a 1.2GHz processor, 3.7-inch touch display, sporting a 800 x 480-pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus, 768MB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage. It’s also pretty slim at 11.5-millimeters thin.

The design of the Torch 9850 could have been incredible, but RIM counters most of its sleek styling with noise and distractions. For instance, the front of the device is this one big beautiful black slab that runs from the top of the smartphone all the way to the bottom. It’s like this sheet of touch sensitivity has been perfectly stretched over this awesomely-designed facade with symmetrical curves on both the top and bottom… but it gets interrupted by these hideous hardware buttons that look completely out of place. To compound matters, the buttons don’t perform very well at all. It was a last minute hardware change as the phone originally sported integrated BlackBerry keys much like all of RIM’s recent releases, and that would have been great if RIM was able to stick with that slick design.

The side and back of the device get worse and worse design and styling-wise. On the sides, RIM chose to use such a massive, gaudy, plastic chrome-look bezel, that the only physical buttons it could fit are these tiny, almost paper thin buttons that offer little tactile feedback. To make matters worse, RIM crammed not one or two, but three of these onto the right side of the phone — volume up, mute and volume down. Below those you’ll find a dual-stage dedicated camera button for the auto-focus camera. On the left side of the phone there’s a lone microUSB port.

Switching over to the back of the device, the industrial design that was too good to be true is again spoiled by poor color choices, worse material choices, and hardware placement. The battery cover cut out is reminiscent of previous BlackBerry Storm battery doors (anything having to do with the BlackBerry Storm should be wiped clean, and RIM shouldn’t sell that phone anymore) and it interrupts the styling of what could have been a really smooth phone for the touch world. There are no charging contacts on the Torch 9850 so those awesome charging cradles won’t work, though RIM sells one you plug the phone into when it’s in landscape.

As far as touch goes on RIM’s first all-touch device (remember, I refuse to acknowledge the BlackBerry Storm since it has a SurelyPressed the wrong button screen), it’s pretty horrible. Let’s start with the physical screen itself.

First off, there’s no oleophobic coating on here, so grease and fingerprints get picked up very easily and it’s pretty difficult to wipe off. But worse than that is the material RIM used for the display; it feels completely different than the screen on the BlackBerry 9900. This screen feels like cheap plastic and it doesn’t allow your fingers to glide over its surface smoothly… at least not like other touch devices such as the iPhone 4 or Motorola DROID BIONIC, both of which use Gorilla Glass (Apple is rumored to). It’s another example of how RIM’s poor R&D management and foresight have affected not just the types of products it makes, but their quality as well.

I do like the integrated lock / unlock button on top of the device, though.

Oh boy. The good thing about this section is that the OS isn’t vastly different from previous BlackBerry operating systems. In fact, not much has changed at all in terms of significant user-facing elements. That means it’s a frustrating experience all around. The Torch 9850 sports an outdated OS, the worst App ecosystem and selection, mind-numbing quirks and issues, all on a platform that was not ever made to be used on a touch screen.

Nothing makes sense at all. Why is there a mouse cursor on an all-touch device in the web browser? It’s the equivalent of shipping a stylus. Why can’t I successfully use an Exchange account without having a BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Why can’t I sync my Google account in addition to my Exchange account once I use a BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Here’s another example of something that irritates me: on smart smartphone platforms, when you’re erasing text, the speed at which your text will delete will start off slow and then speed up faster and faster since the system knows you’re erasing more than a few characters. This doesn’t happen on the BlackBerry Torch 9850, and it’s just one of a hundred little things that combine to form a user experience that really isn’t competitive at all.

This is an all-touch device, and as such, so a touch keyboard is your only method of inputting text. It better be damn good, right? Well, the keyboard on the BlackBerry Torch 9850 is probably the worst touch keyboard I think I have ever used. I actually think the keyboard on the Storm was better than this.

In portrait mode, forget about it. It’s useless. Combined with RIM’s horrible auto text correction and suggestions, in addition to the look and feel off the keyboard, it’s just not a winner. “Haha” becomes “Bags”, “thats” doesn’t replace with “that’s”, and so on. And as far as the design, it makes no sense. On such a cramped layout, why would you waste space adding two shift keys — one on either side of the keyboard — just to do it? Why is there a dedicated comma key and period key? The worst is part is that the keyboard only has two layout configurations that I have found; one for the standard layout, and one for the web browser. As an example, typing in the “to:” field of an email is apparently the same as typing a message to a BlackBerry Messenger contact — the keyboard key placement doesn’t change as it would on other platforms to make commonly used keys more readily available in each scenario.

I like the phone app on the Torch 9850 a lot, especially when lightly customized. Having it open right to the dial-pad is fantastic, and I love the layout of the dial-pad, too. It’s huge and almost monolithic. There are only three soft tabs here: the dial-pad, call log and contacts. I’m not going to dive deep into the phone app as it will upset me and ruin one of the only things I like about the BlackBerry 9850.

Battery life on the 9850 seemed quite good, though I didn’t talk much on the phone. Instead, I used it for emailing, BlackBerry Messenger, some web browsing and calendar functions. The phone easily could power through a day of this type of usage, and like most BlackBerry smartphones, the standby time is absolutely ridiculous.

REVIEW
BlackBerry Torch 9850 review (Verizon)
By: Jonathan S. Having it open right to the dial-pad is fantastic, and I love the layout of the dial-pad, too. It’s huge and almost monolithic. RIM doesn’t only miss the mark on both counts with the BlackBerry Torch 9850, the company demonstrates once again that it has no idea where the mark is or where it will be in the future.

It’s well chronicled how and why RIM has failed to stay competitive in the smartphone market, but what’s so shocking is that the BlackBerry Torch 9850 is basically little more than a Storm 9550 without the SurePress screen, which is nothing more than a lame, misguided attempt at trying to compete with Apple.

The reason I’m being so harsh, and the reason my views on the BlackBerry 9850 are so different than the BlackBerry Bold 9900 (which I loved), is because these are two different arenas. The Bold 9900 is what a BlackBerry is about. The Torch 9850 is a device RIM did not ever envision making, and it is manufactured to compete directly with the number one and number two touch smartphone platforms in the world. It doesn’t compete. It feels like a feature phone compared to the BIONIC and iPhone.

If for some reason I was forced to either use RIM’s BlackBerry Torch 9850 or the first-generation iPhone as my daily phone, there’s no question what I would choose: the iPhone. Don’t forget that Apple’s first smartphone received iOS 2.0, one that brought the App Store, Microsoft Exchange support, and many more features that RIM still can’t compete with from several years ago.

If you’re a BlackBerry fan with Verizon who just has to have an all touch device, the $200 BlackBerry Torch 9850 is obviously your only choice but it’s a pretty terrible one. Do yourself a favor: duct tape your busted old Curve back together and hold out for the BlackBerry Colt.

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/13/blackberry-t...review-verizon/

[Review] BlackBerry Curve 9360 (Apollo)

BlackBerry Curve (Apollo). We’ve just scored some more hands-on time with RIM’s upcoming next-generation Curve, now named the BlackBerry Curve 9360. That’s what we’re being told is the final model number for this handset, though knowing RIM, there are sure to be some variations on that. This unit feels like a production unit to us, and with a final model number, it can’t be too long before they start infiltrating your local carrier’s store shelves. In the mean time, check out our hands-on gallery below!

P.S. We’ve heard that RIM won’t be using NFC for mobile payments for a “little while.” Instead, RIM will focus its initial NFC efforts on things like contact sharing and adding users to your BlackBerry Messenger list, etc.

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/31/blackberry-c...-9360-hands-on/

Official Bold 9900 Discussion Thread

Research In Motion isn’t just a leaky faucet ahead of BlackBerry World this year, it’s a waterfall. We scooped RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry lineup back in January and more recently, we gave you a hands-on look at the BlackBerry Bold Touch, BlackBerry Touch and BlackBerry Torch 2 smartphones, but the leaks continue. In recent days we’ve seen full specs, brief hands-on videos and more, and for the two or three remaining naysayers who still don’t believe RIM is about to announce its next-generation smartphone lineup at BlackBerry World next month, RIM’s promo videos are now starting to leak out. Companies typically don’t put these promotional spots together unless the have some devices to, you know, promote — so BlackBerry fans should sit tight for another couple of weeks and we’re certain they’ll have some sleek new smartphones to swoon over. Hit the break for RIM’s official BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry 9860 promo videos.

Latest News:

T-Mobile Launches the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Its First 4G BlackBerry Smartphone
Featuring the new BlackBerry 7 operating system, the smartphone will be T-Mobile’s fastest BlackBerry to date, leveraging a 1.2 GHz processor and America’s Largest 4G Network

2011-08-17 12:01:20
T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced the upcoming nationwide availability of the first 4G BlackBerry® smartphone to run on America’s Largest 4G Network™ — the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900.
New BlackBerry App World and Developer Updates

New BlackBerry App World and Developer Updates

Great news everyone! We recently said that we would take quick action on some of the community’s most pressing issues and I’m very pleased to provide the following updates. This is just a start, but I’m thrilled with what we’ve been able to pull together.

1. BlackBerry® platform developers are no longer required to submit a notarized proof of identity to distribute apps through BlackBerry App World™. As I mentioned in my previous post, we learned that this has become a pain point for some developers, so we have been working behind the scenes to remove this barrier. You still have to submit proof of identity, but now that can be as simple as faxing or emailing a copy of your driver’s license.

Our developers can still choose to submit notarized proof of identity if they don’t wish to use their driver’s license as ID. Please note that businesses will still need to send in official documentation to validate their company information (ex. Articles of Incorporation, Business License, etc.).

We are happy to be offering this new option for developers, but would also like to confirm that this is an interim measure on our way to a more robust long-term solution. We are working towards providing a fully automated online process that respects the privacy and security requirements of all parties involved and will provide more updates as we progress.

2. As promised, we have posted some updated information in our blog to help new developers get started with building applications for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™. We’ve also included information on some of the enhancements we are working on for the next release based on feedback from the community and from our own internal groups. Please take a look at Tim’s recent post on BlackBerry WebWorks for BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK improvements for some great tips on getting started with BlackBerry PlayBook development and for some updates on fixes and features we’re working on as we speak!

3. I’m very happy to share that we have decided to extend our free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet offer deadline to March 31st to ensure that all developers, including those who have been pending approval due to the requirement for a Notary, have an opportunity to participate and to get great apps submitted using either the Adobe® AIR® SDK or the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for BlackBerry PlayBook. We’re already testing and approving apps so please keep them coming to ensure you’re ready for launch!

Stay tuned for more posts with further updates and news. Lots of great stuff in the works!

Tyler Lessard, VP Developer Relations and Alliances

EXCLUSIVE: BlackBerry 2011 Software Roadmap

Exclusive: BlackBerry 2011 Software Roadmap – OS 7, BIS 4.1, and more!

In the beginning of the year we learned the 2011 BlackBerry lineup through various leaks and roadmaps surfacing. It looks like an exciting year to see RIM release the Dakota/Montana, Malibu, Apollo/Sedona, Monaco, and Torch 2, all of which seem likely to come preloaded with OS 6.1. However, it seems most people are interested in knowing when QNX (most likely to be known as OS 7.0) will reach RIM’s handsets.

According to the 2011 BlackBerry software roadmap, we should see integration begin for OS 7.0 towards the end of November 2011. It isn’t clear if BlackBerry OS 7.0 will be an ‘update’ to 6.1 or if it will be released on newer devices first and potentially rolled out to older devices later. Also, it is not clear if the “integration” is for developmental purposes or an official release. Nonetheless, it is a good sign to see the possibility of QNX-based BlackBerry smartphones nearing availability. Hit the break for more!

Also to be released within 2011 will be BIS 4.0 in March or April and 4.1 in late August or early September, Facebook 2.0 beta 1 and 2, App World for BlackBerry PlayBook (in March), updated BlackBerry Protect 1.1 and 1.2, Identity Service, Social Feeds 2.0 in May and BlackBerry News 1.1. There will also be End of Life (EOL) for apps like Flickr (already has happened) and Viigo in August.

There are a lot of RIM built apps coming and a few going this year. While we don’t have too much information surrounding OS 7.0, it is still good to have some clear evidence RIM is working towards it and a little more exact time-frame for its release. We’ve already seen what the next Facebook will look like, and it seems RIM is diligently working towards perfecting their apps to be on the same level as those for Android or iOS. Who is excited for OS 7? Check below for some additional info on BlackBerry News, Social Feeds, and TicketMaster v2.0.

Source: http://n4bb.com/4802/exclusive-blackberry-...is-4-1-and-more

EXECLUSIVE: BlackBerry Messenger will launch on

Exclusive: BlackBerry Messenger will launch on Android and iOS

BGR has learned from multiple trusted sources that Research In Motion is planning to bring its beloved BlackBerry Messenger app and service to Android, and eventually to iOS as well. According to our sources, RIM has not yet finalized details surrounding timing or pricing, but we have heard that the company might make the software free to all users. We’re also told strategy is still being developed, however, and RIM may end up charging users a one-time fee or even a recurring fee for access to its BBM service on third-party platforms.

It might seem a bit strange for RIM to want to bring the software that is responsible for keeping BlackBerry devices in the hands of countless potential defectors, but in the big picture, we think it could make sense. The company is getting very frustrated with applications like WhatsApp and Kik offering third-party experiences based on a concept RIM invented, and RIM apparently wants to own the space.

As far as what Android and iOS users can look forward to, we’ve been told RIM will offer stripped down versions of the BBM experience BlackBerry owners know and love. That way, Android and iOS users can communicate with practically anyone who has a smartphone using BBM, but they might not be able to share photos, location, or videos (when RIM crosses that bridge). Users who want the full BlackBerry Messenger experience will still need a BlackBerry smartphone to get it. At the same time, RIM could own the entire messaging app category on every major smartphone OS platform and could potentially draw new users in because it has given them a taste of what BlackBerry Messenger is all about.

Right now, we have heard that Android is definitely a go. But again, we’re not sure on timing, though our sources are confident that it will launch some time this year. RIM chose Android first because of the fact that it could develop and integrate something like this much easier with an open platform, but the plan is to build and deploy an iOS version at some point as well.

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/03/exclusive-bl...ndroid-and-ios/

BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 4.0 Docs Pop-up

Some new information regarding the upcoming features for BIS 4.0 have popped up online. While the features aren’t as game changing as what the BIS 3.x releases may have been, 4.0 should still be a fairly decent stepping stone. Some of the new features include Integration with BlackBerry ID (BBID), Improved BIS End User Communications, Automatic Login improvements, Support for new service tiers, and Google Calendar Improvements. Hit the break for full details.

What’s New?

Integration with BlackBerry ID (BBID)
Improved BIS End User Communications
Automatic Login improvements
Support for new service tiers
Google Calendar Improvements
Integration with BlackBerry ID (BBID)

Developed by RIM, BlackBerry ID (BBID) provides users with a single user account and credentials to access RIM services and third party services. Users can store and manage their personal information and preferences which can be used to provide personalized application experiences.

BlackBerry ID provides a unified view of a user’s information and preferences to RIM services and participating 3rd parties, who can use BlackBerry ID to authenticate users and access personal information in order to quickly enrol a user and personalize an application to user preferences.

With the release of BIS 4.0, all devices with handheld software 6.1+ and a BBID will have their BIS account associated with their BBID. The use of BBID will provide users with the ability to seamlessly switch their devices by inputting their BBID on their new device. This will switch all services over to the new device, including the BIS Email account.

Note: Users with a BBID will not be able to access the HTML user interface – only on device management through the email setup application will be available.

Improved BIS End User Communications

Currently, BIS communicates with end users for a variety of different reasons (i.e. upgrade notifications). These communications are sent using PIN messaging, which are text based and do not allow for dynamic content. As a result, these messages often ignored due to their unofficial look/feel.

In BIS 4.0, a new method of communication will be introduced to help improve the effectiveness of the messages BIS sends to end users. The improved messages aim to help improve the customer experience when action is required by creating a richer, more appealing message. Improvements will include branding all messages with the BlackBerry logo (making it look more official), and ensuring the message appear at the top of the inbox, even after other messages are received afterwards. The improved messages will also be sent in rich text, and allow for a user to launch their Email Settings directly from the message. The improved communications will help reduce support calls by increasing the likelihood of an end user resolving their issue by reading and following the steps outlined in the message.

Note: Improved BIS communications requires HH SW 6.1+.

Automatic Login Improvements

Previously, BIS users who had a username and password were prompted to enter their credentials whenever they accessed their BIS account from their device. Customers often forgot their credentials, consequently driving support calls. In BIS 3.2, the existing Automatic Login functionality was updated for an improved experience for users who have a username and password. Users who access their BIS account using a username and password on their device by using the email setup application (devices running 4.6 handheld software or earlier) were automatically logged into their BIS account, thus eliminating the need for a user to enter their credentials. In BIS 4.0, this improvement has been extended to all username password users who use the Email Setup application on 6.0+ devices. This will provide an improved experience for more BIS users by not having to remember BIS credentials when accessing their account from their device, helping reduce support calls related to forgotten BIS account credentials.

Note: Users who have a BlackBerry hosted email address (@<carrier>.blackberry.com), and currently do not have a password assigned to this email address will use their BIS account password for validation actions.

Once BIS 4.0 is released, the user will have to enter their BIS account password when they make changes to their hosted email address from their device.

Google Calendar Synchronization Improvements

The following improvements to Google Calendar Sync have been included in BIS 4.0:

Delete sync for events that belonged to a deleted Calendar
o If the user goes to Calendar Settings in Google Cal and clicks on the “Delete” link for the primary calendar, then confirms the deletion in the Gmail UI, the events deleted on the Gmail calendar are deleted from the HH as well.

Status field sync
o The “Status” field (free/busy status) is synchronized between the HH and the Google calendar

User Interface Changes

Remove Import Control:

In BIS 4.0, the import control option within the HTML user interface will be removed.
This feature previously allowed users to have BIS check Outlook for integration settings during setup of a new email account.

Secret Question:

Currently, BIS prompts a user to enter a ‘secret question’ and ‘answer to your secret question’ that allows them to retrieve their BlackBerry email address password in the event it has been forgotten.
In BIS 4.0 the text will be changed and users will now be asked to enter a ‘security question and ‘answer to your security question’.
It will be interesting to see when these are rolled out. So far only BIS 3.2 features have officially been released in North America and other parts of Europe, Asia. Nonetheless, these features should be released at least sometime within 2011, we hope. Any particular feature stand out as a good one to you?

Source: http://n4bb.com/4488/blackberry-internet-s...s-pop-up-online

Foursquare 3.0 for BlackBerry coming soon; new build this week

If you’re an avid user of Foursquare, then you might know that your Android and iOS friends will be getting updated to Foursquare 3.0 late tonight. Unfortunately, BlackBerry users will be left in the dark for a little while longer. Nevertheless, Foursquare made sure to mention on their blog that:

“BlackBerry users, we’ll have a new build for you this week as well, but alas, not yet with some of this foursquare 3.0 goodness. The good news is that this latest build has all the pieces in place for us to move a little quicker, so stay tuned!”

Of course, this could mean this week, next week, or a month from now, BUT you’ll at least be getting a new build this week leading up to the 3.0 release. Either way, it is good to know that BlackBerry users will at least get updated to Foursquare 3.0 sometime ‘soon’. The images above aren’t for the BlackBerry version, but they do show off the new explore feature that we’ll see on the BlackBerry version too. The new Foursquare will have a completely revamped leader-board, help you discover more places, a new mayorship system, and much more. For more details on it, check out the Foursquare blog here.
BlackBerry App World Version 2.1

BlackBerry App World Version 2.1 Now Officially Available For Download!

Just last month RIM put BlackBerry App World version 2.1 up in the Beta Zone and today it’s gone official as version 2.1.0.39. According to KB25585 from the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center, the only new feature mentioned for App World 2.1 is In-app Payments which the beta included and more:

In-app Payments (from the knowledge base article)
You can now purchase additional items from within an application that you’ve downloaded from the BlackBerry App World™ storefront.
Filtered Featured Items (from the beta)
Once you open this latest version of App World, you’ll notice that Featured Items are seemingly more relevant to you. Well, we decided to change this functionality based on the feedback we received from you during the App World 2.0 Beta Program. Featured Items are now filtered by carrier, country, device and OS to ensure that you are presented with the most relevant apps as soon as you open App World.
Extended BBID Login Session (from the beta)
We heard what you had to say during the App World 2.0 Beta Program last summer and decided to make some changes to the BBID functionality in App World. With this latest release, a single BBID login session lasts for 20 minutes, making it easier for you to download and install as many apps as you’d like in one go.
For more info and to download BlackBerry App World version 2.1.0.39 go to blackberry.com/appworld. If you notice any other differences feel free to mention them in the comments!

For more info and to download BlackBerry App World version 2.1.0.39 go to blackberry.com/appworld.
Leaked: BlackBerry Theme Studio 6

RIM has said that they would be releasing BlackBerry Theme Studio 6 officially by the end of this month. If you can’t wait until RIM decides to do this, than you’ll be glad to know it has dropped early. A lot of developers should be happy as you can get a head start on designing themes for other OS 6 devices besides the Torch.

Download BlackBerry Theme Studio 6 from:

Rapidshare: http://rapidshare.com/#!download|229tg...v6_0.exe|231875
Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PF0XKYW4
Deposit Files: http://depositfiles.com/en/files/5zb3laht8
Hotfile: http://hotfile.com/dl/100035759/1cd7143/Bl...o_v6_0.exe.html

BlackBerry ‘Malibu’ Curve Touch Details Leak Out

BlackBerry ‘Malibu’ Curve Touch Details Leak Out

Just the other day when we told you RIM was working on a touchscreen for the BlackBerry Style2, we also noted they had been working on a Touch Curve. Turns out they still are and it should be releasing late 2011, early 2012. The new Curve Touch is codenamed Malibu and will be the first keyboard-less Curve. Check out the rumored specs below:

Processor: Qualcomm MSM 8655 800MHz CPU
Radio: CDMA – EvDo Rev A
Display: 3.25″ 480×360 HVGA
Navigation: Trackpad & Nav Keys
Keypad: Virtual QWERTY
Camera: 5 MP (with HD Video recording)
Memory: 1GB Flash + 512MB RAM, Hot Swap MicroSD slot
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
GPS: Autonomous & A-GPS
Connectivity: NFC, Micro USB, Bluetooth 2.1
Sensors: Ambient Light Sensor, accelerometer
The Malibu will be a CDMA device and looks relatively similar to the Monaco, except with a form factor like the BlackBerry Sedona. What do you think of the Malibu? Too bad we cant use it here in Malaysia...

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 details leaked?

There has been a lot of whispers on what could be packed into BBM 6.0, and a lot of whispers of what users would like to see as features. Needless to say, some new rumored features have popped, whether they’re real or not is the question. Although, we do have to say, the features sound like a great way for further enhancing the social networking side of BlackBerry. Hit the break for the full rumored features.

Some of the features of BBM 6 so far include:

The ability to play games and use your BBM user name as your gamer name
Cross chats between users over BBM (and it looks like you and the other parties playing don’t have to be on each other friends list)
Also, when we complete tasks on these new games our status will change to show what task we completed (sounds like its similar to the “show what i am listening to tab” and will probably have an option to share with your BBM contacts or hide it from your contacts)
It also seems like on BBM6, BBM groups will be able to handle more members
The new BBM6 will be supported on all devices running OS 5+ (at least for now)
Looks like a mobile game developer company by the name of “Gamemachi” is working on game(s) for this new BBM6 platform. I wonder who else will be joining them?
This seems to be pretty big news from RIM, taking social networking and gaming to another level. We can probably expect to see more at BlackBerry World in Orlando Fl this May. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hopefully we will find some more information out in the next month of two. I’m hoping these leaked details we see so far are accurate, but they do remain rumors until we see or hear more on this. Also, let’s see a leak for BBM 6 come out! I wouldn’t mind seeing it hit BlackBerry Beta Zone either!

So according to the source, BBM 6 is expected to hit the streets soon, just don’t know how soon “soon” is. Let’s just kick back and wait.

Source: http://www.pocketberry.com/2011/01/25/blac...eatures-leaked/

First look on BlackBerry OS6.1

BlackBerry OS 6.1 Will Include Manage Panes Options – Select Which Panes Appear In The Home Screen!

Thank you RIM! This BlackBerry 6.1 screen capture above shows off a new feature in the upcoming OS update that so many of us BlackBerry 6 users, including myself, have been longing for... the ability to manage homescreen panes.

In the default BlackBerry homescreen experience the All, Favorites, Media, Downloads, and Frequent panes are always present, which on a device like the BlackBerry Bold 9780 (that is fast and lacks a touchscreen) can make for a lot of accidental scrolling between panes. With BlackBerry 6.1, the new Manage Panes option will make that annoyance a thing of the past as you will be able to choose which panes to show on the homescreen. Great news. Now we just need to see this baby get released!

Source: http://crackberry.com/exclusive-praise-bla...omescreen-panes

RIM is gearing up to release at least 4 new BlackBerry devices in 2011. Along with the hardware upgrades and form factor changes, RIM will be packing them with a new variation of BlackBerry 6. The new software will be labeled as OS 6.1, packing a few newer features. Here we touch on a few of these features currently bundled in OS 6.1.0.7 found on the BlackBerry Curve Sedona.

One exciting new feature in OS 6.1 will be the ability to manage panes. You will now be able to pick if you want those (sometimes pointless) panes that show your favorites, media, downloads, and frequently used apps. This will be a great new management feature, especially for devices without a touchscreen, or even just to simplify your BlackBerry down to one view. The image at the beginning of this article shows what it is like to have ‘All’ selected as the singular view.

In the same options area to manage panes, you can also the number of rows of icons. This should stay fixed and not change from orientation to orientation as it does on the Torch. Below show a picture of the homescreen with only one row of icons.

BlackBerry OS 6.1 should be a fairly nice step up. While the pre-release OS 6.1.0.7 was very buggy, and not all the features may have been available. We hope to be gaining more information on the many new features RIM intends to implement. Nevertheless, we see decent improvement, and for that we’re undoubtedly excited for the future. What new features do you hope RIM integrates into 6.1?

Stay tune more update coming soon...

News: BlackBerry Style 2

One of our sources let us know that RIM has been testing out a BlackBerry Style with a touchscreen for the next possible iteration of the 9670. It isn’t clear if both displays will be touch interactive or solely the main, larger display. We’ve also heard that RIM was playing around with a dual-hinged prototype. This would give the BlackBerry Style2 the option to ‘flip open’ from clamshell into portrait or landscape. We’re not sure how this would have worked with the keypad when moving from different orientations, but it sounds cool.

Something else our source briefly noted was that RIM has also been working on a Curve with a touchscreen. This won’t be on the next-gen Curve Sedona releasing this year. But, it is nice to know that RIM is diligently working on touchscreen enabled devices (since touchscreen is the current mobile trend). Nevertheless, things look to be moving ahead for RIM and it is always good to know what they’re working on. Although, will it ever see the light of day is the real question. Our guess is that we won’t see a ‘Style2′ until RIM has pushed the original Style 9670 around to the rest of the world.

Source: http://n4bb.com/3236/blackberry-style2-wil...content=Twitter

Leaked Photo & Specs Of Next Generation BlackBerry

Leaked Photo & Specs Of Next Generation BlackBerry “Apollo” Curve – Also Launching With BlackBerry OS 6.1!

It looks like BG is on a roll today. BlackBerry 6.1 was just announced and already we’ve seen a leaked image and specs for the BlackBerry Dakota, and now the next generation BlackBerry Curve. The new Curve model is codenamed “Apollo” and with specs like a 480 x 360 screen, 5-megapixel camera, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri-band HSPA 7.2Mbps radio, NFC and a nice processor, I think this Curve will do well especially since it will also launch with BlackBerry 6.1.

Any Curve fans excited for this device? Check out the specs below!

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
Tri-band UMTS/HSPA 7.2Mbps
Bluetooth 2.1
Wi-Fi b/g/n
GPS
NFC
512MB of eMMC, 512MB of RAM
5-megapixel camera with flash
HVGA 480 x 360 display
1050 mAh battery
Tavor MG-1 800MHz CPU
BlackBerry OS 6.1
11mm thin

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/13/exclusive-ne...-specs-with-it/

Leaked Photo Of The BlackBerry Dakota, Non-Sliding Touchscreen/QWERTY Combo Device!

The BlackBerry Dakota has surfaced again thanks to the guys over at BGR. They were able to get their hands on what is apparently the “first ever photo” of the non-sliding, touchscreen/QWERTY combo device. The Dakota looks like it has a Bold 9000 body with a TrackPad, the Bold 9700 keyboard and a touchscreen along with specs like HD video recording, NFC, 3G Mobile hotspot, magnetometer and more!

The BlackBerry Dakota will also come with the just announced BlackBerry 6.1. Back in January 2010 someone had leaked photos of what they said was the Dakota/Magnum and I have to say, they look pretty similar to this new one save for the lack of a TrackPad. I guess BG’s can still be considered the first image since it’s closer to the final product. Personally, I would prefer a BlackBerry with QNX on it but since that may take a while, I’ll definitely be grabbing one of these.

Check out the rest of the specs below and let me know what you think in the comments!

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
Tri-band UMTS
5 megapixel camera with HD video recording, flash, and image stabilization
4GB of built in storage, 768MB of RAM
2.8-inch VGA 640×480 capacitive screen
WiFi b,g,n on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies
3G mobile hotspot!
MicroUSB port
Bluetooth
NFC
Magnetometer
Accelerometer
Proximity sensor
10.5mm thin
Launches with BlackBerry OS 6.1

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/13/exclusive-bl...en-waiting-for/

Leaked Photo & Specs For The BlackBerry Torch 2 – 1.2GHz Processor, 8GB Of Memory, BlackBerry OS 6.1 & More!

Wow, those BGR ninjas are definitely working overtime! Not only have they leaked info for the BlackBerry Dakota and Curve “Apollo”, now they’ve leaked info for the BlackBerry Torch 2.

This refreshed Torch will look like the Torch 9800 save for a matte silver finish and some very impressive hardware upgrades. Besides for launching with BlackBerry 6.1, the Torch 2 will also get a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of memory, NFC, OpenGL ES and more. This device is so far set to launch in Q3 through AT&T. Very exciting leaks so far today. I wonder what we’ll see next…

Check out the rest of the specs below!

1.2GHz processor
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
Tri-band HSPA 14.4Mbps
3.2-inch VGA 640 x 480 capacitive display
8GB built-in memory
512MB RAM
Bluetooth 2.1
GPS
NFC
5-megapixel camera with flash
Magnetometer
Accelerometer
Proximity sensor
1300 mAh battery
BlackBerry OS 6.1
OpenGL ES
14.6mm thin

Source: http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/13/exclusive-bl...-gets-detailed/

BlackBerry Storm 3 “Monaco” Leaked Photos & Specs – 1.2GHz Processor, BlackBerry OS 6.1, OpenGL ES 2.0 & More!

Well what do we have here, yet another set of specs and a photo for an unreleased BlackBerry smartphone. BGR has done it again. First the Dakota, then the Apollo and Torch 2 and now, the BlackBerry Storm 3!

The Storm 3′s codename so far is Monaco and it will bring features like a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display, 1.2GHz processor, 8GB eMMC (storage for apps and data), 512MB of RAM, and an Optical TrackPad. This device definitely looks a lot like the photo of a real device leaked back in September. What do you think about the BlackBerry Monaco so far?

More specs below!

1.2GHz processor
3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
Tri-band UMTS/HSPA
5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording
8GB eMMC (storage for apps and data), 512MB of RAM
microSD slot
Magnetometer
Proximity sensor
Accelerometer
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
2.4GHz b/g/n and 5GHz a/n Wi-Fi + UMA
3G Mobile hotspot
Optical trackpad
1230 mAh battery
BlackBerry OS 6.1
OpenGL ES 2.0

Source: http://blackberryrocks.com/2011/01/14/blac...2-0/#more-29715

More Leaked Photos Of The BlackBerry Apollo, Dakota & Torch 2!
