Unable to play videos

Hi everyone,

Got my MBP last week, first MAC migrating from Windows. However, having some problems with simple tasks and have a couple of questions. Apologies in advance if it's really basic stuff.

1) If a software is downloaded (say, Flip4Mac) to the admin account, does that mean other user accounts are not able to use it unless it is also installed there? In Windows, you do it once and all users have it.
I played a few vids on my admin account on Quicktime and VLC, no issues at all. When I tried the same vids on my son's account, error box appears and it says 'unable to play as codec is missing'. It goes on to suggest to install appropriate software. Which I did and no dice

2) Called up Apple helpline, they claimed that it was due to parental control options. Suggestion: To open up another user account and to try the video there. My question, does parental control really affect playback capabilities?

3) Did what they suggested. Again the same error box appears. My question, what the h&@% am I doing wrong??!

Would really appreciate any help or tips LYN forumers can offer. Thanks in advance
