Sharing my personal experience.

I had a 720P DVR with 4 cameras installed. It was running fine but wanted to capitalise on latest HD analog technology.
There are few technology of running analog HD on your BNC cables e.g. TV1, AHD, CVI, and SDI. However from my own fact finding TVI spear headed by HIKVISION and DAHUA is moving faster than others followed by AHD. HIKVISION DVR can handle 5MP cameras and have multihybrid technology i.e. connecting IP Camera, TVI Camera, AHD Camera and standard Analog cameras to maintain your investment.

The other reason from my upgrade was need to add additional cameras to my house. I needed minimum of 8 port DVR while trying to maintain some of my current cameras. As such I decided on HIKVISION triple hybrid DVRs.

Choices were
DS7208HQHI-F - only 1st two port allows 3MP, 2 additional IP camera
DS7208HUHI-F - up to 3 MP on all ports plus 2 IP 4MP camera
DS7208HUHI-K - up to 5MP on all ports plus 2 IP 6MP camera, H.265
last digit after F or K will indicate max sata drive allowed i.e. F1 = 1 drive, F2 = 2 drives

Installation was a literal plug and play by unplugging BNC connector from old DVR into the new DVR. Additional configuration required was for HIK Connect to view camera remotely. What I also like on HIKVISION is you can set motion based recording and area in the screen that triggers the motion.

Obviously with such DVR, you want to capitalise on higher megapixel cameras. Choices to explain codes:
