TNB retiree

Translate to English

Balangi firmly supports this electric vehicle that has been used for five months. (Photo provided by the interviewee)

(Lawrence Arnold) A retired citizen complained that in response to the government’s carbon-reduction and environmental protection policy encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles, he bought one. However, starting in January this year, his Bantuan Kasih (STR) and Bantuan Asas Sara Hidup (SARA) aid from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) was discontinued, which is like the government contradicting itself in its efforts to encourage people to use electric vehicles.

Balangi Singh (63 years old, retired Tenaga Nasional technician) told Sin Chew Daily today that since the government encourages people to buy electric vehicles for transportation and introduced a tax exemption policy for electric vehicles starting in 2022, he withdrew RM118,000 from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) in August 2025 to purchase a completely built-up (CBU) BYD electric vehicle.

He pointed out that he was originally a recipient of STR and SARA aid. After buying the electric vehicle in August last year, he still received STR and SARA aid from September to December. STR is distributed every three months, RM400 each time, four times a year, while SARA is RM100 per month.

“Unexpectedly, STR and SARA were suddenly discontinued in January this year. After inquiring with the Inland Revenue Board, I was told that the reason was that I had purchased an expensive electric vehicle, proving that I am wealthy and therefore not eligible for the government aid. This left me shocked.”

He said the government started encouraging people to buy electric vehicles in 2022 to reduce the use of gasoline, as burning gasoline pollutes the air, hence the introduction of the tax exemption policy for electric vehicles.

Balangi Singh stated that he bought an electric vehicle in response to the government’s call to reduce air pollution, but unexpectedly encountered this issue.

He mentioned that since the Inland Revenue Board stated that to regain the government aid, he must sell the electric vehicle, after careful consideration, he decided to reluctantly sell it.

He hopes the government will not contradict itself, to avoid undermining the success of the carbon reduction policy.

https://www.sinchew.com.my/news/20260129/eastcoast/7226761

Meet the local talent behind Perodua’s first-ever

KUALA LUMPUR: Behind the launch of Perodua’s first electric vehicle (EV), the Quest for Visionary-Electric or QV-E, lies the story of a young Malaysian engineer whose innovation is helping reshape the nation’s automotive landscape.
Chok Jia Jiunn, 44, the chief engineer of the project, has proven that Malaysia is not only capable of competing in the country’s new automotive era – it is also capable of leading.

“I have always believed Malaysia has the talent and capability to succeed. My motivation comes from the desire to create something that not only meets automotive standards but also reflects the innovation and needs of Malaysians,” he told Bernama at the launch of Perodua’s first EV yesterday.

“Designed by Malaysians for Malaysian needs, I wanted to show that local talent can create something the nation can be proud of.”

The Rawang-born engineer said he was supported by more than 100 young local engineers and researchers aged between 25 and 40, from various departments including internal and external research, electronics, interior design, and safety evaluation.

“Every team member worked closely to ensure smooth progress, from ideas to prototypes, and finally to the completed product tailored for local needs,” he added.

According to him, the QV-E is not just Perodua’s first EV – it is a symbol of the ability, creativity and dedication of Malaysia’s local workforce.

“We hope Malaysians feel proud because this product is created by our own people for our own country. This is proof that, when given the opportunity and trust, local teams can produce something extraordinary,” he stressed.

Chok shared that development of the QV-E began in September 2023, with early focus on in-depth research into local user needs.

Findings showed that Malaysians tend to prefer dynamic vehicles with spacious interiors, premium finishes, and a comfortable driving experience.

Beyond driving experience, he said ease of maintenance was also a key priority in the development of the QV-E.

“Our goal was to ensure that new EV users feel like they are driving a normal car, even though it’s electric. Every aspect is designed for a smooth and comfortable driving experience.

“We positioned the battery so it can be replaced within 30 minutes in the event of any issue under warranty. This is an important step for ensuring a seamless EV ownership experience,” he said.

The QV-E is also equipped with a smart digital system that allows drivers to switch between normal and “sport” mode easily, along with a futuristic design that enhances aesthetics and functionality.

Chok said the QV-E, priced at RM80,000 without insurance or battery, will be on the market soon.

At yesterday’s event, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his pride “not only of the Perodua EV launch, but because it was produced through the expertise, discipline, effort, and perseverance of local talents”.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...s-first-ever-ev

MG Malaysia

SAIC Motor Malaysia, the national sales company for MG vehicles, has announced the appointment of Hoffen Yih Ben Teh as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective today.

Teh has over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry and most recently served as Senior Vice-President of Sales, Marketing, and Product Planning at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The University College London (UCL) Mechanical Engineering graduate also sits on the executive committee of MyZEVA (Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association).

At Mitsubishi, Teh laid the foundation for Malaysia’s battery EV (BEV) market. In the early 2010s, it was not possible to register a BEV in Malaysia because JPJ’s vehicle registration system could not leave a vehicle’s engine capacity and engine number blank.

Teh worked with JPJ to resolve the matter. He also reached out to first responders such as the fire and rescue department, insurance providers, and charging infrastructure operators before introducing the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in 2013 – the first BEV in Malaysia.

At SAIC Motor Malaysia, Teh will oversee Sales, Product, and Marketing operations, leading initiatives to expand MG’s dealer network, broaden its product portfolio, and accelerate the company’s green energy vehicle roadmap. His focus will also include enhancing customer touchpoints, introducing innovative retail experiences, and driving sustainable, future-ready mobility solutions to boost MG’s market competitiveness.

“I am confident that Hoffen’s leadership and extensive industry experience will bring fresh energy and direction to SAIC Motor Malaysia. His expertise in strategic development and organisational structuring will be instrumental as we take bold steps forward,” said Emory QiFeng, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia.

“With MG’s growing momentum in the market, we are optimistic about starting local production soon — a milestone that will mark the beginning of our second phase in Malaysia. This will enable us to serve customers better and further strengthen MG’s position as the leading continental upmarket brand in the country.”

“I am honoured to join SAIC Motor Malaysia, a company whose vision strongly resonates with mine,” said Hoffen Teh, Chief Operating Officer of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “My priority is to strengthen the organisation’s foundations and unlock its full potential, while creating a solid platform for MG to grow. I look forward to collaborating with the team to drive new opportunities, support the transition to local production, and help shape the future of mobility in Malaysia.”

https://www.wapcar.my/news/bev-pioneer-to-s...nch-soon-746496

Illegal e-hailing JB-Singapore

QUOTE

SINGAPORE: Some 19 drivers were caught offering illegal ride-hailing services within Singapore and across the border with Malaysia on Tuesday (Aug 5).

They were nabbed after a combined operation by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority that targeted such activities at a land checkpoint, and through LTA’s patrols at Gardens by the Bay and Changi Airport.

This is the first time the agencies conducted such an operation at a land checkpoint.

In a statement posted on its Facebook account on Aug 6, LTA said that the vehicles involved were impounded.

When asked, LTA did not say at which of the two checkpoints the crackdown happened, but a video shared on social media seen by ST suggests it was the Tuas Checkpoint.

According to LTA, 136 drivers have been caught providing illegal cross-border passenger transport services since 2022, and their foreign-registered vehicles were impounded.

Those who have been charged and convicted so far have been fined up to $2,600 and had the vehicles forfeited.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said in a Facebook post on Aug 6 that LTA was ramping up its enforcement against such illegal services because those drivers do not have the proper licence and insurance coverage for the passengers they might be ferrying.

“Such services put passengers at risk, and harm the livelihoods of law-abiding licensed drivers,” she said.

Sun said that the Government is looking into improving the existing licensed cross-border taxi scheme by expanding the boarding and alighting points, and encouraging more taxis to participate.

This includes getting different vehicle types to serve different passenger needs, and having a user-friendly booking app – something that currently does not exist.

“As these are reciprocal arrangements that we have with Malaysia, these changes have to be agreed by both Governments,” she added.

Efforts to clamp down on illegal transport services have been stepped up recently.

Through tip-offs from the National Private Hire Vehicle Association and regular patrols, the LTA said on July 29 that 12 drivers were caught, including four near Punggol Road and Turf Club Avenue.

This came shortly after an earlier operation conducted on July 18 at Changi Airport caught 10 drivers offering illegal ride-hailing services.

Under the current legislation, offering point-to-point transport services in Singapore and cross-border services without a valid Public Service Vehicle Licence (PSVL) is an offence that carries a fine of up to $3,000, a jail term of up to six months or both.

The vehicles used can also be forfeited.

Only Singapore- and Malaysia-registered taxis approved by the authorities of both countries are allowed to offer cross-border transport. These taxis can pick up and drop off passengers only at designated locations.

Besides the PSVL, Malaysia-registered taxis must also have an Asean Public Service Vehicle Permit. - The Straits Times/ANN

Hearsay most of it kena sita is Alphard/Vellfire/Starex

https://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanp...r-with-malaysia

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR: A townhall to discuss the proposed construction of a national landscape department office, which would see a section of a forest cleared in Bukit Kiara, turned heated yesterday after residents said their concerns were being ignored.
Some of the residents had expressed fear that the clearing of the forest would result in landslides, noting that three landslides had already occurred in the area.

The slope where the proposed office would be located has been cut.

Meanwhile, residents staying along Jalan Abang Haji Openg in Taman Tun Dr Ismail feared the loss of more greenery.

The residents became irate at one of the speakers, a representative from Jaaz Architects Sdn Bhd, whom they perceived as being dismissive of their concerns.

A shouting match erupted when the representative, who was presenting the building plans, responded to a question by a resident on the need for a parking lot at the department’s proposed office.

The resident suggested that the new office be public transport-friendly, to which he replied: “You’re living in an ideal world. Why don’t we stop people from using cars, then we don’t need car parks.”

Another resident then accused the architect of being condescending.

A second exchange occurred when a resident questioned the environmental impact of the development, and what carbon offset measures were in place.

The representative said the proposed development would only take up a small area of the forest reserve, and that the residents still had the rest of the reserve.

This led to a chorus of “no’s” from the residents.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh then intervened and asked the national landscape department how many trees would be felled.

The department’s deputy director-general Ahmad Syaharuddin Kamaruddin said about 300 trees would be chopped down, but that 85% of these trees were rubber trees, which were an “invasive species”.

He said the department would replant 614 trees and 3,733 shrubs.

Some of the residents had no issue with the department’s plan to build an office, saying one was needed in Bukit Kiara which is also a popular hiking spot.

They said there was a need to “look at the bigger picture” and advised detractors against getting too emotional.

Syaharuddin earlier said that the department needed an office in Bukit Kiara to better serve the needs of residents around the area in a timely manner.

He said there was a need for regular track maintenance for hikers, the removal of fallen trees, and research on the flora and fauna in the forest reserve.

“Right now, we need to travel all the way from Putrajaya to Taman Tun Dr Ismail (to do maintenance work). It is not practical,” he added.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ce-turns-heated

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gpEOeZYtop...cDjBakGXGlUKfTg

Ejen Ali 2

Super-hit movie Ejen Ali 2 achieves the highest box-office income for local and international animated films in Malaysia

QUOTE

With a gross of RM55.1 million, Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2) has now officially been crowned as the highest grossing animated film in the history of Malaysian cinema, surpassing all local and international animated works that have ever been screened.

Even more impressive, EATM2 has now surpassed the grossing of blockbuster films from Hollywood and Asia over the past two months.

This is a clear testament to the confidence and extraordinary support of Malaysian audiences for animated films that are based on local identity and spirit.

“This success does not belong to WAU Animation alone but to all the agents who believed in and stood by us from the beginning.

"I truly appreciate the dedication of the entire WAU Animation team who have poured their energy and creativity into making this film a success.

"Thank you also to our production partner, Primeworks Studios, who have given their full commitment in promoting this film, and have always come up with fresh and bold new ideas to ensure that EATM2 continues to be the audience’s choice.

"And of course, the highest appreciation goes to the fans who have been our backbone and main source of inspiration since day one,” said Usamah Zaid Yasin, director of the EATM2 film.

On the other hand, Nini Yusof, Chief Executive Officer, Media Prima Television Network and Primeworks Studios, paid tribute to all those who worked on the project and said every one individual involved in the project deserve a pat on their back.

“This achievement is the result of our shared cooperation, trust and passion. We hope that the audience will continue to support EATM2 and help us reach our next collection target of RM60 million.

"Only with your strong support can we realize our dream of producing the next Ejen Ali script, for the development of the local creative industry that will make Malaysia proud,” said Nini.

From an animated series on television to the silver screen, Ejen Ali has grown into a mature and influential franchise. This second film not only strengthens the brand, but also reflects the evolution of local animated storytelling that is bolder, more dimensional and touches the hearts of various audiences.

For the record, the film is still showing in cinemas nationwide.

About Ejen Ali the Movie 2

Set in the futuristic city of Cyberaya, “Ejen Ali the Movie 2” follows a young boy who is accidentally recruited as a secret agent by the Meta Advance Tactical Agency (MATA) intelligence agency. Ejen Ali is eager to prove himself in Project Satria, MATA’s latest Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted armored suit.

As Ali struggles with his new responsibility to master Satria, he must accept MATA’s decision to give his friend (and rival) Alicia the next holder of the supercomputer device, IRIS. Meanwhile, the hacker Neonimus resurfaces to wreak havoc on MATA, signaling a larger conspiracy in Cyberaya.

Since its premiere on Malaysian television channel TV3 in 2016, “Ejen Ali” has been broadcast and streamed in over 65 countries across South-East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and North America.

The first two seasons of the series were followed by “Ejen Ali The Movie” in November 2019, which grossed an impressive RM30 million (USD8 million) in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia, making it one of the highest-grossing animated films in Malaysia to date.

The latest installment, “Ejen Ali Season 3”, also holds the title of being the first Malaysian animated intellectual property to be co-produced with Disney+ Hotstar South-East Asia, and will first launch exclusively on the streaming service in June 2022.

https://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanp...lms-in-malaysia
LHDN E-invoicing first shot

E-INVOIS: 66,000 PERNIAGAAN DI PLATFORM E-DAGANG DIKENAL PASTI TIADA ATURAN BAYARAN DAN REKOD PELAPORAN CUKAI

QUOTE

https://www.hasil.gov.my/en/media-release-d...90-d5c28bd3b531

China hits Canada

China hits Canada with anti-dumping probe on canola imports, Ottawa deeply concerned

BEIJING, Sept 3 (Reuters) - (This Sept. 3 story has been corrected to say that more than half of the canola exported, not produced, by Canada goes to China, in paragraph 6)
China said on Tuesday it planned to start an anti-dumping investigation into canola imports from Canada, after Ottawa moved to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, lifting prices of domestic rapeseed oil futures to a one-month peak.
Canadian Farm Minister Lawrence MacAulay said the move was "deeply concerning". In a post on the X social media network, he said Ottawa was closely following the case and would defend and support the farm sector.

Canada, following the lead of the United States and European Union, announced last week a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminium from China.

"China strongly deplores and firmly opposes the discriminatory unilateral restrictive measures taken by Canada against its imports from China despite the opposition and dissuasion of many parties," a commerce ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

The ministry said China will also initiate an anti-dumping investigation into some Canadian chemical products.
More than half of canola exported by Canada makes its way to China, the world's biggest oilseed importer. Canola, also called rapeseed for certain variants, is used as a cooking oil and in a wide range of products including renewable fuels.
The Canola Council of Canada said it was confident that China's probe would show that Canadian producers were playing by the rules. In a statement, it said Canadian exports of canola to China last year totalled C$5.0 billion ($3.7 billion).
Dan Eye is chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital Group.

China's rapeseed meal futures on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange jumped 6% to 2,375 yuan ($333.56) per metric ton following the announcement, hitting its highest since Aug. 6.
The ICE canola contract for November delivery dropped to its daily limit of $45, or 7%, to $569.7 per metric ton.
"Canada's canola exports to China have increased significantly and are suspected of dumping, reaching US$3.47 billion in 2023, with a 170% year-on-year increase in volume and a continuous decline in prices," the ministry said.

"Affected by the unfair competition of the Canadian side, China's domestic rapeseed-related industries continued to suffer losses," it said.
China's rapeseed meal prices have plunged 22% so far this year amid abundant oilseed supply and rising domestic production.
"The current (edible oil) domestic consumption is not strong, and there is an abundant supply of domestic stocks,” said Ma Wenfeng, senior analyst at Beijing-based agriculture consultancy Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultancy.
China imports its canola predominantly from Canada, followed by Russia and Mongolia.
"Arrivals from Canada have been growing at a fast rate," Ma said.
The world's second largest economy imported 5.5 million tons of canola in 2023, valued at $3.72 billion. Imports from Canada accounted for 94% of the total.
Comparatively, the bulk of China's electric vehicle exports to Canada is from Tesla's Shanghai factory and local Chinese firms have no big exposure to that export market yet.
Canadian imports of automobiles from China to its largest port, Vancouver, jumped 460% year over year to 44,356 in 2023, when Tesla started shipping Shanghai-made EVs to Canada.
The Chinese spokesperson said it intends to resort to the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism for Canada's relevant practices.
China has also initiated trade investigations on imports of pork, brandy and dairy from the European Union in response to curbs on its electric vehicle exports.
ALTERNATIVE SUPPLIES
China had targeted Canadian canola in previous trade tensions. In 2019, it suspended two Canadian canola exporters before removing the restrictions three years later.
Analysts said China could turn to Australia and Ukraine for alternative supplies, especially as Australia's canola production is ample.
Canola production in Europe has been hit by poor weather while China's agriculture trade with Ukraine is limited.
"We expect China to buy larger volumes from Australia if restrictions on Australian canola are eased," said Ole Houe, director of advisory services at IKON Commodities in Sydney.
"As of now Australia's canola exports to China are negligible, just about 500 tons since the beginning of 2024," Houe said.
China's imports of Australian canola have been restricted due to concerns about blackleg disease.

https://www.reuters.com/business/china-says...ada-2024-09-03/
