Fuziah: Meritocracy wont work in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: A senator has argued that a purely merit-based system may be impractical in Malaysia, suggesting that a proportional approach would better reflect the country’s multiracial make-up.

Fuziah Salleh, the deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister, said merit should be applied with consideration for ethnic representation, adding that opportunities and benefits should be distributed in proportion to the population.

“For example, if 60% of the population belongs to a certain ethnic group, then merit should be applied within that proportion,” she said during yesterday’s recording of BBC World Questions at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre.

A 40-year-old Singaporean driver, who was involved in a road rage incident in Johor, has been fined RM9,100 (S$2,760) in court in Malaysia.

According to Malaysia media, the man, Colin Cheng Kuan Poh, pleaded guilty to two offences: Committing mischief by damaging a car, and insulting the modesty of Ng Yeow Meng, the owner of the car he had damaged.

Cheng had spat on Ng's face.

Cheng's lawyer requested a lower fine, saying that he had to care for his bedridden parents on his S$2,200 salary as a human resources manager.

She also noted it was Cheng's first offence.

Three-month-long birthday celebration for 11th Sabah Governor

KOTA KINABALU: Numerous events will take place over three months to celebrate the 74th birthday of Sabah's Tuan Yang DiPertua Negeri, Tun Musa Aman, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

“In accordance with the Sabah Government Gazette, the official birthday of the Governor falls on March 30, 2025.

“However, celebrations will continue until June 21, 2025, with seven official events taking place in Sabah during this period,” said Dr Gunsalam after chairing the first Main Committee Meeting after the Sabah Cabinet approved the proposed events and budget on Tuesday (Mar 25).

The Local Government and Housing Minister said this marks Musa's first official birthday celebration since his appointment as the 11th Sabah Governor, effective January 1.

MASJID TANAH, March 8 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly said he hopes justice will be served in the investigation against colleague Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri for alleged corruption.

Ahmad Zahid related his own experience of being prosecuted in court, and later being discharged, from all 47 charges in his Yayasan Akalbudi trial.

“Personally, I have been through a similar situation... It was clear that when my case was brought to court — despite various accusations from different parties — justice was eventually upheld.

“And I hope the same will happen in court [for Ismail Sabri’s case]. That is our expectation of the MACC,” he was reported saying by Berita Harian.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: An attempt to smuggle RM340,856 worth of chicken parts from Singapore into the country was foiled, after a lorry was intercepted at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) checkpoint here last Friday (Jan 17).

Johor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) and state Customs Department enforcement officers inspected the lorry from the republic, and found 2,241 boxes of undeclared 'Bishop Nose' chicken parts, during the 8pm inspection.

'Bishop Nose' refers to a specific part of the chicken's 'backside' or 'tail', which is a popular delicacy in Southeast Asia.

In culinary contexts, it is appreciated for its flavour and texture, often used in various dishes.

The man was eventually sentenced to 10 months in prison.

The American defendant Thomas Jonathan Anthony (28 years old) faced a total of seven charges, including intentional injury to a public servant, violation of immigration laws and theft. He pleaded guilty to three of them on Thursday (September 26). The judge made the above judgment after taking the remaining crimes into consideration.

As the defendant did not meet the conditions for issuing a pass under the current immigration policy, the immigration officer issued a Not To Land ban on him and explained to the defendant why he was prohibited from entering Singapore.

The defendant was then taken to a room specially for denied entry passengers to wait for their flights and asked to stay in the room until they boarded the departing flight. In addition to the defendant, six other people were taken to the room at the time, and the defendant's personal belongings were stored in the locker in the room.

At around 3pm, the defendant had the idea of escaping from the room. He asked one of the auxiliary police officers on duty to open the locker, claiming that he wanted to check his wallet. After the latter opened the locker, the defendant took out his wallet and put it in his pocket.

The auxiliary police officer asked him why he took the wallet. After a moment of silence, the latter suddenly snatched a bunch of keys from the auxiliary police officer's belt.
