Couple to share same interest?

I have a question here. Is it important for a couple to share the same interest? I came out with this question because it happens to me. I've known this guy for less than one year and we are dating now for 1 month plus. He has a deep interest in hardcore music and stuffs. Recently, his band have a chance to join a gig in KL this week. That was a big moment for him because it will be the first performance for his band but at the same time I feel bad because I cant be there to see his band performed because I am at Sarawak.

He loves music, he could die with his guitar. Last December was his birthday. I was hoping that I can give him a new electric guitar as a birthday gift. But I didn't buy him any because I'm afraid I will buy the wrong guitar for him. Well said, I don't know any of the stuffs. I asked him what he want for his birthday gift and he answered "Surprise me". How can I give him anything I want because I just don't know what to give to him when it comes to music stuff

One day I asked him about our relationship. I asked him whether is it important for me to know all the music stuffs he talking about. Sometimes, I always felt left out and I always feel that he does not interested in me because I don't know what is he talking about. At the end of our every conversation, he need to give explanation on every little thing that he talked because the hardcore music is a new thing for me as I didn't grew into metal and hardcore music as much as he do. He told me once about his ex-girlfriends (2 of them), who are both are have a passion in hardcore music. One of her ex-girlfriend is a drummer and can play drum very well. The other one of his ex-girlfriend has a same interest with him, listen to the hardcore music too, went to a gig together. I feel that I am not like his ex-girlfriends because I don't know anything about it. He said that it is okay if I don't know anything about hardcore stuff, as long as I love him and I am wiling to spend the rest of my life with him. I love him so much not because his look, but his heart and kindness. Same goes to him. He says that I am a special girl that he ever met and if he had a chance to meet me earlier he must be fall in love with me earlier

Back to my question, do you guys think that the same interest you share to your girlfriend/boyfriend is important in the relationship? How relevant is that to you?
