The military's website was not immediately accessible.

Turkish security officers detain police officers on the side of the road

"Attempt by part of muilitary'
Yildirim says "it would be wrong to call it a coup" but that there has been an attempt by "part of the military".

He describes it as an "illegal attempt" to seize power.

The Bosphorus and Fatih bridges were closed by the gendarmerie - a branch of the Turkish military dedicated to internal security - for traffic travelling from Asia to Europe, NTV television said. Traffic was still moving in the other direction.

Meanwhile, Turkish military aircraft were heard flying low over Ankara, AFP correspondents in the capital also reported. There was no immediate explanation for the cause of the incidents.

Tanks at Istanbul Ataturk airport

'The army are taking over everything'
Gabriel Turner, 23, a management consultant from north London, is on holiday in Istanbul and described how there had been heavy police and security presence throughout the day before the military coup got underway after sunset.

He told The Telegraph:

"Earlier today there were police everywhere. I thought that was normal but the two Turkish girls I was with told me it wasn't normal. We were walking around the centre of Istanbul, at the Grand Bazaar there were police at every entrance and exit with lots of guns.

"A police helicopter was flying very low at sunset, it was about 8pm. It looked like it was searching for something. Later on, at about 10.30 I was in Karakoy, a bar area in the city centre and everyone started looking at their phones. A man who owns the bar told us that the army are taking over everything.

"Then we walked down towards the a quieter area by the sea. While we were walking, my friend said the army had closed brides across the Bosphorus. We could see army helicopters in the sky.

"We went inside a cafe and everyone was on their phones looking worried, texting. Lots of people were running to catch a ferry - because the bridges were shutting and people wanted to get home. Then policemen came out of the ferries on their walkie talkies, looking very alert."

Live Update (Telegraph)

Reddit Live

Brutal assaults scaring Auckland's Asian students

A spate of violent attacks on Asian students in Auckland has raised concerns that offenders see the victims as easy targets.

Six young people were left bloodied, battered and terrified after the assaults.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown has requested a briefing, and concerns have also been raised with Police Minister Judith Collins.

The attacks - all in public places and mainly carried out during daylight hours - came as Thai authorities warned citizens of the dangers of such incidents in New Zealand.

Auckland City Police's Inspector Joe Tipene, who oversees Maori, Pacific and ethnic services, said the attacks were worrying and arrests were made in two of the cases.

No further arrests have been made today in relation to the attacks but police said this evening they were following very positive lines of enquiry in both the Oakley Creek incident and the Albert Park incidents.

"We have executed search warrants today in relation to the Oakley Creek incident and enquiries are continuing," a police spokeswoman said.

There was no more CCTV footage of the Albert park incident.

The spokeswoman confirmed police were looking for six offenders, four women and two men, their ages described as being between 14 and 20.

Police were not aware of any further incidents of this nature recently.

Lots of positive feedback and support of the students had been sent via Facebook and people were continuing to share the images posted yesterday, the spokeswoman said.

Police were offering ongoing support to students who may be concerned about their safety.

"We are continuing to liaise with the student community via existing channels and have offered to host another forum if required."

In the first attack, last Tuesday, two female Chinese University of Auckland students were attacked and robbed by a group of up to six teen boys and girls as they walked through Albert Park about 8.30pm.

They were punched and kicked, and the group pulled their hair before wrestling them to the ground and stealing one handbag and a phone.

One of the women fainted and was left with a deep cut below her eye. Both were bruised and very shaken. Phone, bank and bus records showed their stolen items had been used throughout Auckland.

Just before midnight on Wednesday, two Japanese women were attacked in Queen St, near Myers Park. They were allegedly dragged on to the road by their attackers who again punched them to the ground before kicking them and stealing their possessions.

Four young teens, aged 14 and 15 years old, were arrested following the attack and are due to appear in Youth Court this week.

A man who came to the victims' aid, Theo Gills, said one of the women had a head injury and was badly shaken.

Hours later, at 9.30am on Thursday, a male Chinese student walking to Unitec in Mt Albert was set upon by two men who beat him so severely photos show his face and upper body smeared in blood.

They kicked him and stomped on his head, breaking his glasses, and stole his laptop, before escaping in a car. On Monday night, an international student walking along Khyber Pass Rd near the corner of Broadway, Newmarket, was pushed to the ground by four youths aged between 12 and 14 years old who were later arrested.

Whau Local Board deputy chairwoman Susan Zhu said the incidents have caused widespread fear among the Chinese community, who felt vulnerable and helpless in the wake of the attacks.

North Korea launches long-range rocket

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)North Korea has launched a long-range "missile," a South Korean defense ministry official told CNN Sunday.

The announcement comes just days after the reclusive country's initial launch plans came to light, which drew condemnation from South Korea and Japan.

A senior U.S. defense official said he can "confirm that we have detected a missile launch from North Korea. Based upon its trajectory as we are tracking it, it does not pose a threat to the U.S. or our allies. We will have more updates soon."

Though North Korea said it planned to put a satellite into orbit, the launch is viewed by others as a front for a ballistic missile test.

U.S. officials have said the same type of rocket used to launch the satellite could deliver a nuclear warhead.

"Forcing the launch is a clear violation against the [United Nations Security Council] resolution and a serious provocation against the security to our country," Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.

Officials for the International Maritime Organization and the International Telecommunications Union each told CNN that North Korea informed their respective organizations that it intends to launch a satellite.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

A month ago North Korea said it carried out a hydrogen bomb test -- a claim that was viewed skeptically by most of the international community.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also urged North Korea to "refrain" from the launch and said his cabinet was working closely with the United States and South Korea to gather information and prepare a potential response.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang expressed "deep concern" over the launch.

"We hope (North Korea) will exercise restraint and caution in its actions. It should not act in a way that may escalate tensions on the peninsula," Lu said Wednesday.

North Korea had not given a specific time for the rocket launch, saying it could be launched between Sunday and February 14.

Japanese and South Korean airlines have altered flight paths to avoid possible falling rocket parts. Based on coordinates provided by North Korea to the IMO, the first stage and fairing of the rocket will drop off in waters between South Korea and China. Its second stage is expected to fall into waters off the Philippines' northern coast.

Satellite... or nuclear missile?
At present, North Korea is believed to have one satellite in orbit, the Kwangmyongsong 3-2, though doubts have been raised about whether it is functioning.

While Pyongyang claims that its space program is entirely peaceful, many international observers think the true purpose is military.

China, the Soviet Union and the U.S. have all used intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to launch satellites in the past. During the Cold War era of the 1950s, ICBMs were used by both the United States and the Soviet Union as warhead delivery systems, as well as in the early development of both countries' space programs.

The Unha rocket used to launch North Korea's last satellite is believed to be based upon the Taepodong long-range ballistic missile, which has an estimated range of around 5,600 miles (9,000 km).

That would put Australia, much of Western Europe, and the U.S. west coast in range of a North Korean warhead.

According to multiple experts, North Korea has at least a dozen and perhaps as many as 100 nuclear weapons, though at present it lacks sophisticated delivery mechanisms.

North Korea claimed to have tested a hydrogen bomb in early January.

According to a 2015 report on Pyongyang's space program by 38 North, testing rockets through satellite launches would provide invaluable data for potential future ICBMs.

"Even failed satellite launches would be a learning experience," wrote aerospace engineer John Schilling.

Schilling said that a key sign to look out for in future North Korean satellite launches would be attempts to test an advanced re-entry vehicle, vital for an effective ICBM.

Source

Azizulhasni is the world No. 1 again

QUOTE

Azizulhasni is the world No. 1 again

KUALA LUMPUR: Azizulhasni Awang will head to next month’s Track World Championships in London as the world’s No. 1 ranked men’s keirin cyclist.

The 28-year-old Azizul reached the zenith of cycling in the latest UCI world rankings in keirin with a 508-point total. This is not accounting the points accumulated at the recent Asian Championships, where he finished third.

The Melbourne-based cyclist, who was third previously, is only four points ahead of reigning world champion Francois Pervis of France. Kiwi Edward Dawkins, the silver medallist at last year’s World Championships, is third on 494 points.

This is the second time Azizulhasni grabbed the world No. 1 spot, after 2010.

“It’s a big honour for myself and for the country to be ranked world No. 1 in an Olympic year,” said Azizul.

“It’s the recognition of the hard work I put in training and competitions ... the process in getting there,” said the Terengganu-born cyclist.

Azizul now hopes to maintain his top spot until the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August.

“I won the bronze medal in the World Championships in Paris last year. It will be a big boost to my Olympic gold hopes if I can get on the podium in London again,” said Azizul, who is already assured of an Olympic berth in keirin as Asia’s top-ranked cyclist.

Despite having to miss five weeks of training due to flu and a muscle tear, Azizul managed to claim two bronzes in the sprint and keirin at the Asian Championships in Japan last week.

National head coach John Beasley hopes Azizul will be in a better physical condition for the London World Championships.

“This (No. 1 ranking) is good news for Malaysia. Azizul had to overcome sickness and injury before the Asian Championships. I really didn’t expect him to come away with a medal, let alone two.

“I’m sure he will be in tip-top condition for London,” said the Australian coach.
Source

Not sure how many Msian have heard of him tho.

Wishes him all the best!

While Indonesia fights Islamic State

QUOTE

‘The Economist’: While Indonesia fights Islamic State, Malaysia politicises Islam

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 ― Indonesian social movements are attempting to counter jihadist influence, but the Malaysian government has completely politicised Islam until there is little space for more peaceful interpretations, The Economist said.

In an analysis of the Jakarta bombings published yesterday, the London-based weekly publication noted that supporting or joining the Islamic State (IS) is not illegal in Indonesia, though the Indonesian government is considering preventive detention laws to curb terrorism.

“The country’s two biggest Muslim social movements — Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama — have been trying to counter jihadist propaganda.

“In Malaysia, however, the government itself has thoroughly politicised Islam, leaving little room for dissent from its harshest rules. A study last year found more than 70 per cent of Malaysia’s ethnic-Malay, Muslim, majority support hudud laws such as stoning for adultery. Another found that 11 per cent of Malays viewed IS favourably,” said The Economist in an article titled “After Jakarta.”

Religious authorities in Malaysia have been promoting an increasingly conservative interpretation of Islam, while the ruling Umno has welcomed a relationship with PAS that seeks to enforce hudud in Kelantan. Umno has also repeatedly demonised the DAP as being anti-Islam.

A survey by local pollster Merdeka Center released in 2014 found that 71 per cent of Malays polled supported the Islamic penal code that imposes punishments like amputation for theft.

A Pew Research Centre study last year on the attitude of Muslims towards IS showed that 11 per cent of Malaysians supported the Muslim militant group that has claimed responsibility over the January 14 bombings in Jakarta, Indonesia, that killed four civilians and four terrorists.

The Economist reported that authorities believe an Indonesian named Bahrun Naim, who leads a South-east Asian unit fighting with IS in Syria and Iraq, had planned the Jakarta attack from Syria.

Sidney Jones, who runs the Institute for Policy Analysis and Conflict in Jakarta, reportedly said Bahrun had used encrypted messages on social media in a bid to inspire attacks in Malaysia.

The police recently arrested a 28-year-old man at an LRT station here, who was suspected of travelling from Terengganu to stage a suicide attack at a karaoke outlet or a pub in Kuala Lumpur.

Two Malaysian suicide bombers blew themselves up separately in Iraq and Syria earlier this month, killing more than 30 people.

The Economist noted that counter-terrorism strategies that worked before may not be as effective against transnational bodies like IS that it said inspired online self-radicalisation and lone-wolf attacks.

Source: MMail

Jadikan lar IS sebagai contoh, seruan najis.

Enterprise vs Sdn Bhd

I had an registered enterprise company. Wondering if I need to change it to Sdn Bhd. My aim is to pay the least tax as possible.

Here the situation. I basically do design and mobile app stuff. So far is on freelance basis, and go under the radar. My total income fro that was under 25k for this 2 years.

However, I'm might get a project worth 1.5mil. It will takes 18 months to complete. And I need be sub contract some part of the work to other individual/company as well.

I have not pay any tax under Enterprise company, so I am not sure how it works. So here my question is:

- My initial start up is 50k, to buy software, hardware and lots of mobile devices (phone and tablet). Is this deductible from the tax?
- Payment to freelancer and other party for the sub contract work. Its deductible too rite? But some of the work will be sub to freelancer out of this country, will that be a problem?
- what other stuff that is deductible?

And all that taken into account, is there any need for me to upgrade to Sdn Bhd?

Malaysian police most accommodating in the world

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Malaysian police are the most accommodating in the world, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said, despite their decision to prohibit the upcoming Bersih 4 rally here.

“No police in any other country would make compromises the way Malaysian police do. In other countries, demonstrators would follow the rules set out by the police,” he told reporters after the awarding of service medals to police officers who served during the emergency at Dewan Perdana Felda.

The newly appointed deputy home minister said the decision to prohibit the rally by electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 was reasonable as Merdeka celebration preparations would take place at Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok on August 29 and 30, the locations and dates chosen by the organisers for the demonstration.

“It would involve large expenditures for the police who would have to supervise the demonstrations which will take place amidst large groups of people participating in dress rehearsals and preparations for Merdeka,” he said.

“Which also means there could be damages to property involved for the celebrations. So I believe it is reasonable for the police to reject the demonstrations if it were held on those dates,” the Umno deputy minister added.

City police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa confirmed yesterday that the police have barred the Bersih 4 overnight rally as it did not fulfil the prerequisites for notice of the rally and also because the organisers did not get permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

KL Mayor Datuk Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said Tuesday that Bersih 4 attendees will not be allowed to use the historic Dataran Merdeka, although they will be permitted to assemble on sidewalks in the vicinity.

Bersih 2.0 chair Maria Chin Abdullah has said, however, that the rally would go on as planned.

She also pointed out that before the date for the rally was set, DBKL had informed the electoral watchdog that Dataran Merdeka was available.

MMail

Laugh die me!!

I heed the people's voice. (MACC and PAC under investigation?)
"I listen and respect the voice of the youths," he said.
Najib called for all criticism to be made respectfully, so that peace does not become a casualty of short-term political goals.

Mengapa? Kerana mereka takut kepada orang-orang yang berani”.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

'US$650m from Najib's account sent abroad'

QUOTE

Sarawak Report has claimed that US$650 million out of the US$681 million deposited into the personal account of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was transferred abroad after the 13th general election.

The portal said that the money was transferred back to Tanore Finance Corporation at Falcon Bank in Singapore, the same company that had made the initial deposit into Najib's personal accounts, according to an emailed statement from Sarawak Report.

It said the transfer happened on the same day Najib's AmBank account was closed on August 30, 2013.

It added that Tanore Finance Corporation was subsequently closed down in April 2014, based on the company's documents in the British Virgin Islands.

It is unclear where the money at Falcon Bank is now after Tanore Finance Corporation was closed down.

However, Sarawak Report claimed that the accounts frozen by Singapore authorities in the 1MDB investigation is also related to Falcon Bank.

"Insiders have confirmed that the Malaysian prime minister flew over in mid-July for a four-day trip in Singapore, during which he attempted but failed to get these frozen bank accounts re-opened," said Sarawak Report.

'Money intended for Umno'

The revelation has raised more questions as Najib and his allies have insisted the massive deposits were a "political donation" intended for Umno.

"This astonishing information answers the former deputy prime minister’s question - posed yesterday - over what had happened to the balance of the money claimed to have been ‘donated’ to Najib personally, on behalf of UMNO, by an anonymous person from the Middle East – purportedly for the election.

"However, it also raises serious further questions for the prime minister as to what right he had to transfer what were supposedly party funds out of the country and why this money appears to have been mixed up with yet more unexplained hundreds of millions of dollars in Najib Razak’s same personal account number 211202200XXXX?" said the portal.

Sarawak Report said Najib had distributed some of this funds as political handouts to BN MPs but it also raised the issue for the Umno grassroots.

"This confirms that the money was indeed being used, but raises the question as to how the prime minister ended up with almost as much money after the election in this account as the sum injected into it beforehand from Tanore Finance Corporation?" it said.

Previously, Sarawak Report and The Wall Street Journal had reported that on top of the US$681 million, Najib's personal account also received deposits of RM42 million from state-owned SRC International.

The whistleblower portal claimed that there were two other deposits, one through Abu Dhabi and another through Dubai.

It added that these brought the total sum held in the prime minister's account to over a billion US dollars.

Source: Mkini
