Questions on research course

Questions relating to degree by reseach. Appreciate feedback from fellow researchers.

I enrolled in a master degree program by research, a collaboration between three parties (industry, academia and sponsor). So the students kinda on their own, neither party fully take them. The program is new, lacking of lots of material and guide, resulting to most of the students extended their semester. (as of now, none finished yet). I fortunately managed to finish mine (thank god). Coincidentally the first one, so no need advise. Submitted the thesis last year. The university's procedure said that it will take 3 month to process thesis upon submission. So the question is:

1) As of now, the thesis still in process (7 month already!!). Reason: External examiner havent give any feedback. Is it normal for this kind of research work to take such long time to process? Can we do anything? I also feel that my situation (self funded, outside student) is one of the contributing factor. Less priority. And I know a similar case student that do joint-research work with a reputable university waited 1.5 years after submitting before getting her result.

2) Is it normal to have supervisors thats not helping (not the subject matter expert)? Been told that it happens, but can change supervisor if we dont like one. But my case was killing me. No other suitable supervisor, and bonded with loan to not able to quit the program, while desperately need technical guidance.

Posted in this section since many 'researcher' flocks here thanks!

p.s: dont ask "wich uni?" coz its completely irrelevant
p.p.s: i personally think this issue is serious. those student sacrificed so much to pursue higher degree to get better jobs, but stuck with it. this contradicts with all goverment efforts to produce high number of RSE.

renting in a new area

Hi all,

Just negotiating to rent an aparment in a new area this morning. There arent many people living there yet, not much advertisement too, so cant really know the standard rent. so here are few questions:

1) is there any ways to know the standard rent if we know the unit price?
2) normally, who pays the maintainance fee? owner or tenant?
3) for a low cost unit, what is the normal things that a tenant should expect in the unit? (that we should demand before agree to rent) eg: curtain, curtain railing, fan, light, cupboard, sink etc..

thanks!

Just installed power steering to my Iswara

Hi sifus, need help.

So last week i installed power steering for my iswara ('03). The shop sourced the steering, which i believe is a second hand. After a while driving, the steering sometimes 'lock' when i turn sharp left (into small 90 degree road from a main road). Managed to brake; and force it back. Almost went into the drain. The steering also changed angle (headed left when the car is heading straight. The tire alignment seems fine).

Went back to the shop yesterday, test drive it but the 'lock' didnt occur. Shop almost close so he just tightened some part under the steering and asked me to try it a week more.

Other symptom i just noticed:
1) the steering 'lock' only happen when cornering left.
2) when power OFF, steer right will move tire, but steer left wont (steering turned but tire stayed)

For no 2), i asked other mechanic today and he said something about steering rack. But that doesnt explain the steering 'lock' isnt it?

Insights are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

INSEP

i recently read about industrial skill enhancement program - INSEP. the program offered here http://www.ami.net.my/pg/insep00.asp?page_name=pg00 , but i heard some other companies had similar programe (a freind from freescale told me they had it). the one offered by AMI is 12 month long, and provides rm500 monthly allowance.

im a fresh grad (eng degree) but lacking for experience. currently having a hard time landing for an interview. is it a good choice if i enrol there? coz it means i'll be spending 1 year studying (and jz when i tought im done with that). and the allowance seems not enough if i were to live by myself (need family support 1yr).

and; anyone knows how is INSEP under other organisation (if there are any). coz the freescale INSEP that i heard was a 6 mth program & offers higher allowance. unfortunately its not offered for the time being.

tq
