with its partnering with US-based Verizon Business. <br /><br />The two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop an Internet Protocol (IP) hub in Cyberjaya. <br /><br />Among the benefits cited for the hub are: Faster connections among local ISPs (Internet service providers), lower broadband costs, and more reliable international connections. <br /><br />Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar, group chief executive officer of TM said the MOU can be seen as an extension of the MyIX initiative launched last year. <br /><br />MyIX is a &quot;peering&quot; infrastructure where local ISPs exchange each other&#39;s traffic without charges. &quot;The lower latency means faster Internet access and better Internet experience,&quot; he said. <br /><br />Abdul Wahid said that it would also mean lower costs for broadband. <br /><br />He however did not disclose any figures. <br /><br />The infrastructure is expected to be ready in June, and when it is, more international Internet traffic will be routed through Malaysia instead of through the United States or Europe. <br /><br />Abdul Wahid also revealed that TM will offer a 4Mbps broadband package soon. <br /><br />Verizon&#39;s extensive network will add to TM&#39;s portfolio of international links, he added. <br /><br />He said that TM&#39;s connection to Verizon&#39;s network will serve as an additional redundancy link in case of natural disasters or other mishaps. <br /><br />Regional hub <br /><br />The MOU is also part of an effort to turn Malaysia into an IP hub for the Asia Pacific region. <br /><br />Such a hub will give Malaysian and foreign-owned companies located in Malaysia better access to IP network technology such as VoIP (Voice-Over-Internet Protocol) and IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), and will allow them to prepare for future IP communications services. <br /><br />Abdul Wahid said Verizon&#39;s network will also attract more international content providers to relocate to Malaysia. <br /><br />This, he said, will spur the growth of local content development. &quot;Most content providers are from the United States and now the local ones can access these sites easier,&quot; he said. <br /><br />Some local content providers, he said, also host their websites elsewhere but with the facility in Cyberjaya, they may not need to anymore. &quot;The high bandwidth and low cost will definitely attract them to host their sites here and create more content,&quot;
