Better Broadband Soon

I have just read this in The Star Tech Central

http://star-techcentral.com/tech/story.asp...&sec=technology

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Better broadband soon

BY JO TIMBUONG

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians can look forward to cheaper, faster and more reliable broadband offerings from Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ with its partnering with US-based Verizon Business.

The two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop an Internet Protocol (IP) hub in Cyberjaya.

Among the benefits cited for the hub are: Faster connections among local ISPs (Internet service providers), lower broadband costs, and more reliable international connections.

Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar, group chief executive officer of TM said the MOU can be seen as an extension of the MyIX initiative launched last year.

MyIX is a "peering" infrastructure where local ISPs exchange each other's traffic without charges. "The lower latency means faster Internet access and better Internet experience," he said.

Abdul Wahid said that it would also mean lower costs for broadband.

He however did not disclose any figures.

The infrastructure is expected to be ready in June, and when it is, more international Internet traffic will be routed through Malaysia instead of through the United States or Europe.

Abdul Wahid also revealed that TM will offer a 4Mbps broadband package soon.

Verizon's extensive network will add to TM's portfolio of international links, he added.

He said that TM's connection to Verizon's network will serve as an additional redundancy link in case of natural disasters or other mishaps.

Regional hub

The MOU is also part of an effort to turn Malaysia into an IP hub for the Asia Pacific region.

Such a hub will give Malaysian and foreign-owned companies located in Malaysia better access to IP network technology such as VoIP (Voice-Over-Internet Protocol) and IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), and will allow them to prepare for future IP communications services.

Abdul Wahid said Verizon's network will also attract more international content providers to relocate to Malaysia.

This, he said, will spur the growth of local content development. "Most content providers are from the United States and now the local ones can access these sites easier," he said.

Some local content providers, he said, also host their websites elsewhere but with the facility in Cyberjaya, they may not need to anymore. "The high bandwidth and low cost will definitely attract them to host their sites here and create more content," he said.

Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik who officiated at the event said the collaboration between TM and Verizon will help turn Malaysia into an IP hub.

He said this move will open the doors for regional telcos to consider Malaysia as a viable, alternative transit hub for global ISPs.

"This would certainly provide an impetus to attract more Tier-1 (top-level) Internet hubbing in Malaysia," he said.

Basically:

1. TM partnered with Verizon using MyIX
2. It will commence in June
3. Lower broadband rates
4. 4Mbps is coming soon
5. Malaysia ambition to become IP hub for Asia Pacific region.

What caught my eyes are No.3 and 4. How low TM will reduce the cost and how much TM gonna charge for 4Mbps connection.

Discuss.
